Call for Moderators: “MVP: Moderator Value Program”
We know that being a moderator takes a lot of work. Being a good moderator takes even more work. And being a GREAT moderator? That takes dedication, patience, and an unmatched level of compassion for your group and your group members.
We also know that you all are the heart and soul of Yahoo! Groups and know the ins-and-outs of running and creating an amazing and thriving group. While your group may have the opportunity to know and appreciate you, we’d love to have the opportunity to promote your group, your abilities as a moderator, and, share a few of your own moderation tips and tricks with other group members and moderators.
Featured Moderators (and groups) will be showcased on the Yahoo! Groups Blog, and, on Moderator Central in the new “MVP: Moderator Value Program.” Select Moderators (and groups) could also be selected for future Yahoo! Groups news stories, articles and ad campaigns.
To nominate a fellow Moderator, or, to nominate yourself, just follow this link: http://surveylink.yahoo.com/wix/p6291825.aspx
You’ll be taken to a survey site where you’ll be asked to answer a few questions about the Moderator you’re nominating (either yourself or someone else).
Just a heads up, if your Moderator is selected for the “MVP” program, we’ll be using some of YOUR answers on the nomination form on the groups blog and in Moderator Central, so be clear and thorough when answering the questions, and only share what you’d want shared with the world!
We can’t wait to read your submissions and start showcasing your knowledge (and groups!) to help other budding groups and moderators flourish.
Melissa Daniels
Yahoo! Community Manager
Please note: Due to the number of nominations received, not all moderators will be selected for this program. Prior to being featured on the blog or in Moderator Central an email will be sent to the nominated Moderator asking for permission, out of respect for their privacy.

I know what I am about to question is unrelated, but I wonder,
how many groups in yahoo groups are public, or have public rss feeds?
I did not figure a way to find out. For that matter, I don’t know how many yahoo groups exists?
can you help?

With all due respect to the YG team, how about focusing on fully resolving all the service related issues (i.e. the non-delivery of auto-delivered scheduled files; non-delivery of Daily Digests; continuing message delivery and posting delays; etc, etc) that are still haunting many group owners/moderators and impacting the user experience of their members in many groups after almost 3 weeks of what has been termed group “hiccups”…(read major “service interruptions”)
Most group owners/moderators would prefer a “well-oiled” , reliable, and stable (read consistently monitored and maintained platform) to support their group and members far more than anything else. When might we expect this to occur?

@Nick,
I completely understand your point and assure you that we are currently working on these issues. We are working to provide you with a “well-oiled, reliable, and stable” platform to support your group and their members, and these efforts continue. It’s important to note that while I may have posted about the MVP program it doesn’t mean that this program is in ANY way taking away from any of our engineers/developers/programmers who are working to both resolve these issues and create new tools for group moderators and members.

I cannot enter Management in my Groups, I get a “Proxy error” message. I have seen several reports of others who are also experiencing this error.
I am not sure what is the best way to communicate this to YG (it is the weekend after all)? – I will go ahead and report this to CC.

I’ve never had so many problems working on my Swingera Yahoo! Group or my new Miller Mood Yahoo! Group as I’ve had this weeked. I am so tired of seeing error messages every times I do something as simple as add a caption to a photo or a description to an MP3 files.
Man, Yahoo! Groups really needs to get their act together!

I’m wondering when you expect to have the Advanced Search function operating again. At this point, in none of the groups I’m subscribed to does Advanced Search show any messages after March 19.

Melissa, I’m speculating that no matter how “great” they are, (or votes they get), the moderator or owner of an “adult” group will not be considered.
Well.. actually I’m not speculating….shame really..
The true winner may never be known…
Melissa Daniels said,
April 5, 2009 @ 6:44 pm
@MT,
Actually, the point of this program is to promote good moderators and their knowledge. You don’t have to be a moderator of a non-adult group to be a good moderator or to know a lot about running a successful group. It’s because of this that we’re considering ALL submissions– adult and non-adult.

@Judith Stein,
Have you reported the issue to Customer Care or reported your group using the link provided in this blog post:http://www.ygroupsblog.com/blog/2009/03/17/groups-search-update/ ? If not, please do so. If so, we should have some good news for you in the next couple of days.

I am an Exchange 2003 Server Administrator supporting about 140 users. Approximately three weeks ago one of my users who subscribes to and often posts to a Yahoo Group had other members of the group start complaining that some of his posts would constantly prompt them to login into our mail server when they opened the messages. I was able to trace all these posts back to instances where he used our Outlook Web Client (OWC). We have made no configuration changes or significant updates to our Exchange server in months and I have no other recipients of mail sent via OWC make a similar complaint. It seems to be exclusive to Yahoo Groups. I have learned that Yahoo Groups recently migrated to new hardware in their data center and the timing of this event seems to be in the same time frame that this OWC problem started. Can anyone shed some light on this issue and any possible resolution? Thanks.

I cannot figure where to place a complaint but my mods are blocking me from asking for a needy family. They didn’t post it then when I asked why I was told she doesn’t “appreciate” me writing her. Then she told me my post had TMI (with only 2 short senetencese) and has refused to post it. I know the mods are volunteers but this is terrible!

Yes, Melissa, I reported search failure for the group FairfieldLife a couple of weeks ago. Got no response, and there’s been no improvement.
I’ll report it again. (As I said, all the groups I subscribe to are having the same problem, but I subscribe to too many groups to list them all.)

Melissa,
I am not sure what the point is of reporting a problem that is already documented as one that Yahoo is aware of and has promised to fix shortly?

Judith Stein,
I see your name in this forum is linked directly to your Group. This is an excellent way to promote ones Group.
Can you share with us how you did this?

When you leave a comment, there are fields for Name, E-Mail, and URL. I put the URL for the group I’m asking about in the URL field. I assumed that’s what it was for; I wasn’t trying to promote the group!

OK, Melissa, I just reported search failure for 15 of my groups via the link you supplied.
FYI, I tested each of them by using Advanced Search to look for messages posted after March 1, 2009. All 15 groups show no messages after March 19 (or earlier in a couple of cases). All 15 groups have had new messages posted since March 19 (in some cases hundreds).

This is a bug– please be sure to report this issue to Customer Care so they can help trouble shoot/resolve the issue.
You can report the issue by going here: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/original/members/forms/general.html

@Judith Stein,
The groups you reported (prior to April 2nd) should be migrated over to the new search service and should see an improvement in search. (I just posted about this fix: http://www.ygroupsblog.com/blog/2009/04/07/update-message-search/)
We’ll gradually be moving more groups over to the service in the coming weeks, so depending on where your remaining 15 groups are in the queue they should be moved over in the near future.

I’m amazed that none of the comments here have to do with the MVP program
.
Hi Melissa,
Can you tell me if it would be okay to post this message to our groups? I wouldn’t really want to nominate myself but I think it would be great if group members knew about the program and could nominate their favorite mod. Not many that I know of read the groups blog unless they are also the moderator of a group.
Thanks,
Chevy (Karen)

Hi Chevy!
Of course you can! You’re always welcome to post any message you find on the Y! Groups blog or Moderator Central to your own groups.
Thanks for asking and for spreading the word!

Melissa,
Thanks for the information.
However, as a member of the Yahoo! Groups Roundtable for 2008, several of my fellow Roundtable members feel like “why bother”. The suggestions we were asked to make were not listened to, your minds were already made up with what improvements you were going to do – and even admitted that you were surprised by our input. Then the Roundtable was discontinued almost 6 months ahead of schedule. No forewarning – just here one day and gone the next. Thrown away with the days trash.
We put a lot of time, thought, energy, hope and dedication into being Roundtable members. We also put a lot of time into the Yahoo! Groups and do it as volunteer positions. As I said before, I might as well just put up my own domain and subscribe to one of the V Bulletin programs so I can make the group work as we need it to.
With this said, why would we, or anyone for that matter, want to be a part of the Moderator Value Program when we were not valued as Roundtable members?
I do appreciate all those at Yahoo! do, especially Gordon. However, I certainly miss Jamie and Matt.
Sincerely,
Winona

What can we do about VANISHING MODERATORS. I’m a member of a group that used to be very valuable but is now completely dominated by unpleasant spam messages and the group moderator’s address is marked as “bouncing”. Is there any way that a new group moderator can be appointed to sort out the spam problem?

I am not happy with aspects of governance on two groups I am concerned with
(refusung or failing to take/publicise postings).
What alternatives are there to formal complaints?

hey Melissa,
Two things. First, Quite a few old Yahoo! groups have had no new message activity (not counting membership changes) in years yet they continue to exist on the system. Is there any plan to purge groups with, say, no activity in the last three years?
Second, sometimes old groups become, effectively, unmoderated where a group owner’s e-mail address is hard bouncing, a moderator’s e-mail address is also bouncing and a third moderator is nowhere to be soon. Is there any mechanism whereby a group member can request Yahoo! Groups add them as a moderator or owner to help maintain the group?
Look forward to your reply.
Thanks,
Doug M.
