Groups Podcast: Keeping the Groups site up & running

Over time I’ve been asked by several groups users what it takes to keep a product like Yahoo! Groups up and running, so I thought it would be fun to meet with Ian, the person who leads the team that does just that. I welcome you to spent the next three minutes listening to a short chat I had with Ian about what he and his team, the Groups Operations team, actually do to keep the groups site up and running.

Just click the audio link below my signature to play or download the podcast.

If you have any questions for Ian after listening to the podcast, please post them below. I’d also love to hear your suggestion for topics you’d want me to cover in future podcasts.

Thanks for listening!

    Raj –

If you click the “Play Now” link you will see a little green triangle appear above the Audio MP3 button. If you click that the podcast will play for you while you are still here on blog.

If you click the “Download” link, a new browser will open up that will play the podcast.

    Hope this helps.

    Best,
    Jami

The most interesting tidbit was that there are only 6 (six?) employees dedicated to Groups.

    wow.

Considering the number of groups and servers and potential problems… that really seems like not enough!

So how can I get a job doing customer care? from home? :)

Hi Jami. First I want to thank Yahoo! for having Yahoo! Groups and now to you and Ian and his team. Great job everyone. Now since you will be sending a transcript to Lynn could you send me a transcript too? I would like to post the transcript at my group so that the members can read about what goes into Yahoo! Groups. Many of my members use dial-up and would not be able to listen to the pod cast.

This has absoulutely nothing to do with this post, but I have a question.

How long does it take to become a member of a group if the moderator has to accept? What if they forget, and you’re never allowed?

Wow, impressive! 110 million users in more than 9.5 million groups sending 15 billion emails a day!
But Ian spoke very fast, and it was not easy for this foreigner to catch all he said. Since many people requested the transcript, how about publishing it here somewhere?

After each message you have a “Respond” button. Then there is a “Respond” button at the bottom of all the messages. That button should be removed. It is very easy to accidentally click on it. Later you get an automated email message that your message wasn’t delivered because you clicked on that bottom button. Why in h do they have that button?

Obviously the programmers don’t personally use Yahoo Groups themselves.

Roy, short answer, yes. Long answer:
    http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/original/ownmod/inviting/inviting-20.html

There still needs to be a deadman switch on the groups, though, for when owners DON’T appoint a new owner before disappearing from the web. When the email address doesn’t work anymore, the owner is gone, even though the group still lists him/her.

Feral groups are a pain. There’s no one left to maintain order and kick out spammers, but it looks like a live group because there are members and messages. It’s all well and good to start a new group for the people who want to continue discussing the original topic, but if you never shut down the now-ownerless group (which, by virtue of being without an owner, is now in violation of Yahoo’s TOS), it’ll keep attracting newbies who don’t know it’s wild and don’t know where the real group went.

I created falseallegations_com@yahoogroups.com recently in order to manage my email ists.

My group is for announcements from me only. My immediate problem is the daily 100-address limit put on by Yahoo. I appreciate that it must be an antispam measure, but it shall take me a month or two to metamorphose my email lists into memberships of my Yahoo group.

Is there a more efficient way of handling the conversion?

I have been the owner/moderator of a Yahoo! Group since March 4, 2006. The group consists of 160 members and is very active. Effective July 12, 2008, my Group’s website seems to have frozen. The heading says “No Activity.” The Group still exists but members, including me as the owner/moderator, have no access to Messages and Database. All members do have access to Photos, Members and Calender.
How can this problem be corrected?
    Appreciate your help. Thank you.

I would like to put my name down for an opening in the referenced group to be their customer service/network server administrator if there is ever a need for someone to help out with their server site. I’m also a person that needs to have a job that can be done on laptop/desktop at home. I know they have been having some issues with SCIC Caregiver site when new members are trying to join their group.

With the recession full blown, are there any lenders out there who will finance 80% of appraised value?

    Thanks,

The dimension and horizon created by our mentor guardian of all the three organs on account of its slave orientation to drag an individual to the point of abrogation and subjugation by confining his inner instincts and his existence is an iron cage, not having any ventilation and people are living in the state of suffocation, virtually on the verge of their death point. There is a complete apathy of the custodian of the power towards their welfare and in our country “We, the people ” who are regarded to be the sovereign of the nation are living a life full of abrogation and subjugation. I seldom consider that whether it is worthwhile to shout a voice and thereby invite some lighter sleeper to suffer the agony of the death and this purpose achieved through my writing may serve some purpose. Since the daylight shallow the darkness, I have written articles to take the intellectual from apathetically approach towards rectification of prevailing maladies as to wake up. I am sending herewith my some articles for being displayed by your good self. Wicker refers to a slender flexible branch, vine, or grass that is woven into a pattern. Wickerwork is the resulting form created by weaving or interlacing wicker. Wicker furniture then, is furniture that is made from weaving branches around a frame and into the shapes of tables, chairs, and sofas. Wicker furniture can be fashioned out of willow, rattan, bamboo, reed, or synthetic materials. Wicker furniture is available with natural, stained or painted surfaces; some wicker furniture has been dipped in a special coating to resist fading and reduce flaking and cracking.

Tropical settings and casual rooms lend themselves to the use of indoor wicker furnitureparticularly well because of its light and airy nature, which is many times paired with colorfully patterned cushions. Wicker furniture is also popular as child-scaled furniture or as furnishings for a young woman’s bedroom. Another popular use for wicker furniture is as outdoor patio furniture. Because of its comparable light weight, the furniture is easy to position around the yard and easy to move indoors when the seasons change – just remember to bring non-synthetic wicker furniture indoors during a summer shower. In addition to outdoor and indoor furniture, wicker is also made into objects such as lampshades, chests, hampers, planters, porch swings, baby bassinets and carriages.

The use of wicker for household objects dates back to when ancient civilizations used it for baskets and chair seats. The oldest wicker pieces still in existence, storage boxes and hassocks, date back to the time of Cleopatra. During the Victorian era in the mid-1800s, wicker furniture came back into vogue because the Victorians believed that its smooth surface was more hygienic than upholstered furniture.
