Dispelling rumors

jjjHi, everyone:

I hope you had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. I can tell you that a good number of our engineers spent their weekend fixing the issues with photo uploads and photo viewing, and we are happy to announce that we believe the problems have been resolved. Please let us know if you are still seeing problems.

Rumor has it that I posted an email on some groups announcing the upcoming shutdown of Yahoo! Groups. Please rest assured that these are just rumors! Not only is Yahoo! Groups not going to be shutting down, but we are also enhancing our features to improve your user experience. Also, don’t forget, I just joined the team and hope to work with you for a long time. ☺

Another misconception out there is that you will be losing all of your archived data. This is absolutely untrue. What seems to have caused some confusion out there is the fact that we plan to make some changes to the Message History grid that has been appearing on the front page of each group. While it is true that our new design won’t initially include the History Grid, our product team is working on a bringing a redesigned version of it back shortly.

Finally I wanted to address Ed K and others who are telling us to focus on fixing the current bugs instead of focusing on evolving. Our goal with this first release of Yahoo! Groups is to embark on a path of more frequent product updates. This means that we can’t cover everything at once, so we focused on the things that were most important to you, to enable you to communicate and share with your group members. The redesign has at the heart of its focus the improvement of current sporadic issues.

Thank you for your patience, support, and understanding during this transitional period.

On 2010 July 19, I got this reply from Miller in Yahoo Groups.
    Reporting a bug (KMM168619145V30061L0KM)

    I quote:
    —————————————————————
I understand you are experiencing an issue when trying to reorder the
list of your Yahoo! groups under your “My Groups”. I apologize for the
inconvenience this issue has caused, and have some information to share
    with you.

There is a bug affecting users with 25 or more groups making it
impossible for these users to reorder groups that don’t happen to appear
in their first 25 (and even worse, it’s impossible to move a group in or
out of the top 25 without unsubscribing).

Our engineers are aware of the issue, but we don t currently have an
estimate for when the problem will be fixed.

I hope this very annoying bug which is still there 10 weeks later is fixed, in the new version Yahoo groups. I have used and created still active groups since it was eGroups

    Thanks

    @oth,
Thankyou for your response. How soon can I expect my other groups to be converted?

  3. Oth says:

    @sassafras,
Your y- mail group was remodeled shortly after the owner of the group requested it here on the ygblog.

  4. sasafrass452 says:

One of my groups was converted to the new format, but then it was changed back to the old one, while another group of mine was converted & has remained that way. Just wondering why this would happen?

  5. Owl says:

Attention everyone! We’re making good progress, so here’s our next step in the movement to save our Groups. We need to give Yahoo’s Higher Ups some understanding of the importance of the Groups to us, so please tell us why you care about Yahoo Groups. Write something that tells us when and why you started using Yahoo Groups, how did you use them, as to what features, etc., did you read in e-mail or use the web interface, and why are you still here today after all this time? And if you are against changing the Classic Yahoo Interface to the New Remodeled Interface, tell us why the new interface doesn’t work for you. If we get enough answers from everyone, we will collect and send your feedback to the Yahoo CEO and company. If you’d rather not reply here, feel free to join this group and post it there: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/modsandmembers/

And here’s part two of the plan. IF you want to help us gather data, and get the word out, copy and paste this post (or write something very similar) and post it in every Yahoo group, online blog, online site, you can and gather the feedback. When you have gathered the feedback, either post it here for me to collect or join the aforementioned group and post it there. You don’t even have to stay in our group, just help us collect the data. Let’s all take a stand and show Yahoo what the Yahoo Classic Groups Mean To Us! Spread the word, collect the data and let’s fight for the groups we love! My new group is dedicated to doing everything it can to save our Groups. One collective voice is louder than 100 individual shouts! Come join in and let’s make our message heard!

I have created a Yahoo group, (surprisingly it’s in un-converted format), where Owners, Moderators and Members are welcome to come join and start a pro-active discussion about all these changes to Yahoo

It is also help those with converted groups deal with them, explain how to save their archives, and put our heads together, brainstorm and discuss it as a collective group of people looking for a solution to a huge problem.

Feel free to come and check it out –it’s public, you do not have to join to read it, but you do have to join to post.

    See you there!

It’s not just that this is a bad design (which it is) it’s that it causing people’s computers to crash and/or freeze. I don’t understand what the people at yahoo are thinking. This is by far the worst net project by any major company. The bugs need to be fixed before it is foisted on the public.

  9. Bryan says:

It seems to me that no one at Yahoo is listening that the new format is not wanted by so many. i can only conclude, unless told otherwise, that we ought be seriously considering other options than Yahoo.
If management subscribes to such lack of concern shown in the feedback from long term users, and how the new product differs so much from users needs and requirements ( why bury that which works to replace it with that which isn’t required), this does unfortunately reflect on the management, and make me wonder if we can seriously consider Yahoo as a good investment. for the future.

@S_Byers — see my comment above– you can prevent your profile from going public with an easy setting change. By switching it over, you won’t have to leave Yahoo! or your Yahoo! Group. My long comment is 9 above yours.

I run an Adult Group on “Tantra for Men” which has yet to be switched. However the profiles of members are very confidential including mine. Howeever I have found that Yahoo Pulse has now listed my profile in the public doman. I have heard that the profiles of other members wil also be treaed thus. It may already be too late to retain confidentiality of membership. This could be immensely embarrassing to everyone involved if what are supposed to be confidential adult profiles are suddenly picked up and listed by search engones, along with threads of postings on very adult topics. In the Group there are also extensive files and links which will be lost rendering the entire Group useless. After many year’s of work it will have to be closed down.

As an aside you could check out DelphiForums.com for free topic based groups.

    Re: David Dillard’s comment

That is another EXCELLENT example of what I mean by my archives being destroyed. That brings up a whole new point I hadn’t even been aware of or considered. I have countless messages in my 40+ groups that have links. Those will all be rendered unusable, if David’s experience is what will be normal. Those are links I may never again even be able to see, and certainly won’t be able to use.

So glad I am downloading archives right now. Every time I think I’ve heard about the height of foolishness in the redesign, I hear something new. I suppose I should have realized this (I saw this to be true in the group descriptions too), but for some reason it never crossed my mind. I guess if the new system can’t even process a quote mark, no way it can do links.

  14. For me the huge problem is with links in messages in Yahoo Groups archives. For those of us who have used brackets to surround website URLs as I have done without a problem on Yahoo Groups and in Yahoo email, we now find inside these brackets is empty space and no link. Even plain text URLs are no longer hyperlinked and this also presents a major problem as the functionality of clicking on the link is gone.

Layla said, “Not only is Yahoo! Groups not going to be shutting down, but we are also enhancing our features to improve your user experience.”

I take exception to this. Although you are not pulling the plug, you are in fact shutting down Yahoo Groups and starting up Yahoo-book. The new format will shut down several of the groups where I’m a member/moderator/owner because they will be pretty much worthless as a group. We need access to message numbers to reference for others. We share important information, not useless things like what someone had for breakfast.

We shouldn’t have to completely change our way of thinking and learn a whole new system on a whim from someone at Yahoo. As many others have mentioned, if you want to be the new Facebook, start a new site. Even offer a migration tool if there is really anyone that would like to move their information over there. We don’t want to interact with the world, only those on our group(s).

All of the groups that I’m on are working fine most of the time and we don’t care for you to tell us what we need or want. I believe we’re the best judges of that.

I’d rate this decision by Yahoo right up there with the Edsel (not listening to the people that know) and Windows ME (kludging something together just to release a new product).
