We’re Remodeling!

We’re excited to share our progress with you!

But, first, we want to thank you for your continued support and feedback over the years. We’ve been hard at work addressing your concerns: launching email updates, revamping message search, fighting spam, and addressing other long-standing group member and moderator requests.

Now, we’ve turned our attention to a full-on makeover. After all, we know that the way that you stay in touch with your friends and family has changed over the last 10 years – it’s time that we remodel too.

Soon, we will be unveiling a fresh design and new features to help you share and communicate with the people who matter to you most. This will be the first of many improvements in the coming months.

We’re still putting on the finishing touches…stay tuned!

I sent a message Special Notice this morning… It never came across the boards and nobody got it… WAY too many glitches in this new format… Yahoo PLEASE listen… We want our groups back the way they were! How is this improvement??

  2. Elliott Thoms says:

Please let us have the option of not changing.

  3. Phyllis says:

You know there’s a reason that I use Yahoo Groups — Facebook makes for a Really *Nasty* mailing list! If you persist in making Yahoo Groups into Facebook pages, I’ll be taking my lists elsewhere. As a yahoo groups owner— and moderate many.I refuse to be forced into a facebook type group..

Contrary to Mark Zuckerberg’s vision, Facebook is not the future of the internet. I want to have *CONVERSATIONS* & build friendships with people — not exchange short quips with them!

This is, IMO, This is a Major Fail, folks. MAJOR fail.
I already have members starting new groups elsewhere.
I plan to go too ,if Yahoo trys to force this on us

If US so anxious about this remoddeling, we -international users- want to be a happy volunteer…

  5. Steve B says:

Does any of this have anything to do with email delivery of posts being on again and off again? And right now it’s off again. Maybe it will be back on again in a week or so?

    Regards,
    Steve B

  6. Gary says:

Your REMODELING SUCKS!!!! I HATE IT!

I am moving my 1,000 plus group users to Google Groups.

The groups have gone down hill since Yahoo took over eGroups. Yes I have been here that long.

    Bye.

    Gary

  7. Dave says:

The new format is spatially inefficient, full of defects, slow, and ugly. Users uniformly HATE it. Restore the original format.

  8. Kara Hendricks says:

ok, my biggest issues are.. IT’s REALLY HARD to follow topics now… This is so confusing!! I see you left the links, polls, and calendar alone.. THANK YOU!!!… None of these work yet in the new format… PLEASE bring RICH TEXT back…

And to be honest.. The PHOTO section is a real question mark as well… I sure hope this gets easier…

But I will hold to my first request… LET US KEEP THE CLASSIC option if we want it… What’s the harm?

    Kara

  9. Jen says:

Please, please, please make “traditional” group look an option to the upgraded group look.

My local list popped over to being the “new” look for a few hours last week, and I’d really rather just keep the functionality and simplicity of the current look and not have a group that looks like FB.

I really liked yahoogroups (and adored e groups and onelist before), and I do not care for the FB interface. Please leave an option to keep the group the way it is.

    Thank you.

  10. David Moore says:

    WOW!

    1. Not able to leave a message in group without a huge delay while page loads.
    2. Replies take even longer. Some of my users gave up!
    3. Forced close on IE8 on XP. Would not finish loading page, shut itself down.
    4. Members complaining about the same things.

WHERE WAS THE WARNING? I COULD HAVE DONE SOMETHING TO HELP MY MEMBERS!

  11. Susan Farmer says:

You know there’s a reason that I use Yahoo Groups — Facebook makes for a Really *SUCKY* mailing list! If you persist in making Yahoo Groups into Facebook pages, I’ll be taking my lists elsewhere. My web-site hosting provider offers mailing list software. I *OWN* almost 20 groups — and moderate about twice that many.

Contrary to Mark Zuckerberg’s vision, Facebook is not the future of the internet. I want to have *CONVERSATIONS* with people — not exchange short quips with them!

This is, IMO, Major Fail, folks. MAJOR fail.

  12. Bill says:

I really hate to see the Rich Text Editor option disappear. How is this loss an “improvement”? Most of our postings make use of it.

It also looks like the Links page is going away. Once again, how is that an “improvement” for groups, like ours, that make active use of the Links page.

One improvment that would have helped our group and others that hold events is an RSVP function.

We’ve been considering migrating a Meetup or Google Group. The upcoming YG changes will most likly force us in that direction.

  13. Kaelinda says:

What everyone is missing is that this is Yahoo’s property. They can ruin it if they want to, no matter what anyone says, no matter how loudly anyone complains, even if it costs them millions. That’s what they did to GeoCities over 10 years ago and that’s what they did to Webring. And, when they took over egroups, it’s what all of us with Yahoo experience expected: that they’d ruin it. The difference is that they took their time ruining it. They didn’t do it all at once, the way they ruined GeoCities. They didn’t ruin it over a couple of years, like they did Webring. But they’re doing it slowly, over a couple of decades – dressing up their destruction as ‘improvements’ and writing fake approval messages in these ‘feedback’ posts. No one actually approves of any changes Yahoo makes, because Yahoo can’t make a change that works correctly. They never have and they probably never will.

Can you tell I’m unhappy with Yahoo?

  14. Lester B says:

    Greetings fellow group owners, moderators and members;

At the risk of being rude, could I please make a suggestion?
There are currently four different threads on this blog, each of them
dealing with the same issue… THE NEW GROUP INTERFACE.
Each time that Layla posts an announcement or update, a
new fragment of the overall debate begins. My suggestion is that
each time Layla provides us with some new information, that
we all move to her most recent piece dealing with THIS ISSUE.
Which would result in a much better exchange of ideas because
the discussion would include ALL of us. There have been some
excellent, heartfelt and fascinating posts to these various threads,
but sadly, I think many of the interested parties are missing them
    because they are engaged elsewhere.

At any rate, I’m going to post this suggestion on each of the
fragmented threads/parts of the overall debate and
suggest that we all move to Layla’s…
    “YOUR FEEDBACK REGARDING OUR REMODELING”

  15. WHAT DID YOU DO? says:

To view your group in the new format, try this: it worked for me this morning. Alternately, check your group URL and try the opposite of this to undo the new group look.

In your url, type the word “new” before groups. so, if you were “groups.bobscars.com”, try “new.groups.bobscars.com”

I did that, because everyone kept saying “try it out”. SInce my group revert after a couple minutes when I didn’t know the above trick, I hadn’t seen the worst of things. Now I have.

Where’s Greg House when I need him? Something medically complicated is about to happen to me, I’m sure, and I need him here to at least insult yahoo while I convulse.

You’ve wrecked the message format for the archives. As test only you’ve left countless posts from my past unreadable, and author’s work uncreditable. In our archives, we relied extensively on replies that included portions of the other person’s reply included. These were distinguished from other people’s work by color and italics, etc. All that is gone, meaning it’s all one big jumble of character’s, which don’t display right, and never will again once you migrate things permanently. This is destruction of work product, as so many before me have said. It’s outrageous!

You’ve wrecked access to the archives by removing any ability for me to browse by date, which, with 12 years of archives, is a serious detriment to me.

Many members are gone over time and they won’t be back. Some addresses don’t even exist any more. So now I am stuck with Eternal Greyface as the icon for countless posts. There’s not much point in having icons if they are all Grayface, now is there? I want them out out OUT!

You have an expand command which I have to use on EVERY MESSAGE if the message is longer that a tweet. However, once I wait for it to load the message, there’s no collapse button to move it back out of the way.

There’s no expanded view anymore, so I have to spend eleven hours clicking and waiting for each message to load.

The updates page is almost exclusively messages on my groups, but what’s “confusing” (Layla) is that the updates page looks like the message page in my groups, but without the ability to expand them or order them coherently.

Again you have a redundant post something reply box on messages taht have been replied to once, and a mouseover (but otherwise invisible) reply button, making the reply box wasted real estate, and adding to the clunk factor.

The Group Info is GONE, until you realize that you can mouseover the group title and then the “i” appears and then you can click on it and see what the group is actually about.

Nothing was problematic in the old format of the page except the character limits on the description, and the inability to place the image as you wanted to on the main page. Now you have no main page, you have a foolish Updates page.

In your beta two years ago you had a nice clean banner up to that noted what was new, “2 new photos, 5 new posts” etc. This allowed a description module and an easy way to see updates without this kind of pig’s ear in the way.

So, as it stands, I can’t go back and look at my old messages because they don’t display right, and the original author’s works are lost among all the other’s upon reading it, soon to be gone forever as to who wrote what. Archive viewing online just because absolutely pointless, and maddening to navigate. A slider?! Really?

I need my messages to display as they were written. Rich text, HTML, and all. Anything less is a total wipeout of 12 years of creativity and fun, and respect for my authors.

I need to be able to get at my messages the way I used to. thsi new way is unworkable for me.

I need to have avatars OUT. Members page okay, but otherwise ALL THE WAY OUT.

I need my group information back in at all times.

I don’t need updates, nor do my members.

Aside from the return of the chat feature, this build breaks my groups, destroys their rich history (actually destroys them–literally), makes even getting at it ugly and problematic.

The visual aesthetic is terrible, ugly and confusing.

I am clinging to an increasingly fragile hope that you will come to your sense and stop this nonsense before it is permanent. You will have done immeasurable harm to countless groups if you go forward. My style of group represents almost every RPG group out there. You’ll destroying all those too, and that is no exaggeration.

You have really REALLY made the worst mistake you could have here. Utter incompetence and disrespect all the way. You wonder why there might be strong opinions? You wonder why there might be frustration? I just tried it out, like you wanted, and 12 years online are decimated JUST LIKE THAT!

Furious doesn’t begin to cover it. You may as well have shut it down. That would have been better. I don’t know how else to express my outrage from here except to start with more direct insults. I’m stopping now.

  16. Paw Paw says:

I decided to stop my fuss over these changes
This is a waste of time and energy to complain

Like the government, the wants of a few, far out weigh the wants of the many !!!

We can vote out government officials, and we can only leave Yahoo Groups.
