Celebrate Earth Day with Yahoo! and Reuse with Yahoo! Groups

In celebration of Earth Day this year, Yahoo! is focusing on one of the most important themes of environmentalism: Reuse. Check out the Yahoo! “Free is Good” microsite: http://green.yahoo.com/earth-day featuring Freecycle and other Reuse groups. For those of you not familiar with Freecycle and other Reuse groups, these are groups that encourage people in local communities to give and receive “free” goods from their neighbors. To inspire more activity and encourage exploration of what these resuse groups have to offer, from now until May 4th, Yahoo! will “hide” special prizes in randomly selected Freecycle and other reuse groups posts. These prizes are specifically eco-friendly in nature (e.g. a Smart car, organic food delivery, eco-resort trip, concert tickets to Sheryl Crow, other locally relevant cool prizes and my personal favorite – toilet paper – b/c that just isn’t reuseable!). Also featured on the “Free is Good” microsite are real stories from real people who have found “treasures” on Freecycle.

We are hopeful that this will strike a chord with the global community and give people a very delightful and “free” way to be green – not only on Earth Day but throughout the year. And, also a great reminder that you don’t have to spend MORE money to be green – Freecycle/and reuse actually help you save money and help save the earth.

Be sure to also check out the localized sites for Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain and Australia!

How do you get on to Freecycle?

  2. Kelli King says:

I have been waiting over a week for approval from The Mansfield Freecycle Group….Whats up with that???…Can anyone help???

  3. Noreen says:

I was told by a friend that freecycle is an excellent she gave away lots of things if it wasnt for freecycle chances are they would end up in the recycling bin to be recycled again (use of more fuel to be recycled) or ended up in the bin if they cannot be recycles. With free cycle someone else can make a good use of it.

I like freecycle but is there elitist freecycle groups like the 1 I try to join 2 weeks ago St. Charles, Illinois Freecycle
Does this not go against the whole concept of freecycle?

I have stuff that I would like to freecycle and who knows there might be stuff I need

We stand at a critical moment in Earth’s history, a time when humanity
must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent
and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise. To
move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent
diversity of cultures and life forms we are one human family and one
Earth community with a common destiny. We must join together to bring
forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal
human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. Towards this end,
it is imperative that we, the peoples of Earth, declare our responsibility to
one another, to the greater community of life, and to future generations.

The Bee and the Industrial Revolution
    By Orlando Martinez, IWA
American bee keepers are disturbed by the loss of the bee
population, bees have not been returning to their hives and that
is affecting the American honey bee pollinating industry. Is it an
unparalleled natural rhythmic ebb in the honey bee population?
or a portentous prophetic warning of a failing ecosystem? If the
bees continue to disappear American agriculture will come to a
disastrous end because the crops and trees must be pollinated
by bees before they can produce fruit and vegetables.
Song birds, crickets, butterflies and ants are disappearing at an
alarming rate. if is widely believe that the main causes of their
disappearance is automobile emissions and the production of
electricity by coal fueled energy plants and other chemical
emissions that are used to manufacture consumer goods. Al
Gore’s “Planetary Emergency’ began with Britons 1790 First
Industrial Revolution i.e. the mass production of manufactured
goods for profit, and then spread to the rest of the world.
The reduction in automobile emissions, the recycling program
and the low flush toilet are paltry efforts when compare with what
will really be needed to save the earth. There will have to be other
very serious reductions in the consumption habit.
Here are some of the regulations and principles, that will
eventually, by necessity, be made into laws that the nations of the
world, especially the capitalist consumer countries of the West,
    will have too collectively enforce.
The hard fact is that a true reduction of emissions means a
reduction in consumption. This means the curtailing the
manufacturing of consumer “want” goods if they do not pass the
    criteria of the “needs” rule.
“Wants” are the desire to collect possessions for the egos own
sake and because money is available to indulge in this kind of self
    serving.
“Needs” are the possession of only the things-home, food and
clothing- that are essential for the survival of human beings and
serve the needs of the world community.

The world can no longer afford the “wants’ of the consumer
society that was created by capitalism merely for profit and the
    need of possesses.
A new value system must be created. Other incentives, besides
profit and personal power, must be developed. The “New Man’s
    Theory’- a Communist-Marxist theory-developed by Ernesto “Che”
Guevara and Fidel Castro which was basically that Cubans should
no longer work for personal benefits, but for the good of everybody
in the society could be the answer to the question “How a can we
save ourselves, families, nation and our world. This knowledge was
not developed by Communism but was the ancient tribal rules that
assured the survival of native people in hard times.
In this last fight to the finnish unity must prevail. International
cooperation is a given. War is a no no. The war between Islam and
Christianity must end. International cooperation was the goal of the
180 nations who met in Bali on December 13, 2007 to discuss what
must be done about global warming. Corporations must have other
    incentives besides the bottom line.
Eva Morales said. “We cannot continue as we are or we
will encounter our own destruction. Only recently, Gorbachev observed:
we need a new civilization model because the present one has reached
its end and has exhausted its possibilities; we have to reach a consensus
on new values, or in 30 or 40 years the Earth may exist without us.”
A new value system must be created. Other incentives, besides
profit and personal power and possession, must be developed.
    The “New Man’s Theory’- a Communist-Marxist theory-developed by
Chi Guevara and Fidel Castro which was basically that Cubans
should no longer work for “personal benefits but for the good of
everybody in the society.” The New Mans Theory is the answer to
the question “How can we save ourselves, our families, our nation
    and our world.
The theologian Leonardo Boff, the founder of Liberation
Theology, writes in his Earthcharter Commission essay Sustainable
Retreat: ” We are comforted by the maxim of the German poet, Hölderin:
“When the danger is great, great is also the salvation. “When, within a few
years, we reach the heart of the crisis and everything is at risk, then will
be apparent the value of our ancestral wisdom and the origins
of Christianity: “in case of extreme necessity all becomes common.
Capital, knowledge and wealth will be shared by all to save all. And we
will save ourselves, together with the Earth.”
The first step towards survival is to read and put into practice the
Earth Charter: the most important document of our times, and the
Sustainable Retreat by theologian Leonardo Boff member of the
Earthcharter Commission. And the Progessive Utilization Theory
(PROUT), the Ideology of and features on holistic, value-oriented
    socio-economics promoting economic democracy, cultural
renaissance, and integrated view on human character and an theory
which will replace Capitalism. http://www.proutworld.org The others are
    also on the internet.
Then each must take action by talking about global warming (the
crisis)with your neighbor and then ask the question “What actions
can we take to save ourselves and the world.” The crisis must be
the subject of discussion on the agenda of every organization and
the subject of school classes. Do not wait for others to start. Send
this essay to your Emial addresses and tell them to pass it on.
    Preamble to The Earth Charter:
We stand at a critical moment in Earth’s history, a time when humanity
must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent
and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise. To

Explanation of the purpose: This article is meant to be educational and constructive and not to offend.

    They Think We Are Stupid

I turned on the television and Two and a Half Men was on and two men, one was the bum Charlie Sheen, talking about sex; Sheen said ” I’m going to visit my neighbors wife while he is playing nine holes. maybe I can play two holes while he is gone.”
The other said: “You sound a little horny maybe I should hid my bowling ball,”
Then this remark; “Maybe I should start sleeping on my back.
The children listen and learn these vulgar conceptions of the loveliness of making love with some one who you love. Is this what we want for the children, for our selves. Please write and tell me that I am wrong.
Television is, for the most part, the enemy of the people. You protest by not buying the products that are advertised on those kind of vulgar soul destroying programs. If you watch still do not buy the products advertized. They think we are stupid.
You protest the nakedness and porn that can be seen on the internet by not buying products that are advertised on the internet. But you still use the services.
Sex is a vital part of pure love. The orgasm was created was, in my opinion, created by God, to lure us into conceiving babies, by having fun. Babies and young children are angels and must be protected by us, the community. All children are our children. Please write and tell me that I am wrong.

Here is a song about pure sanctified love

    When I Fall In Love
 Nat King Cole
When I fall in love it will be forever
Or I’ll never fall in love
In a restless world like this is
Love is ended before it’s begun
And too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun
When I give my heart it will be completely
Or I’ll never give my heart

And the moment
I can feel that you feel that way too
Is when I fall in love with you

Pope John Paul 11 said “Holiness is simply a matter of doing the will of God in one’s daily life.”

Watch Good Night and Good Luck, it exposes how the editorial boards of the communication media control the news we get,

I checked out the “Free is Good” site. If I were to win the free toilet paper for a year, it would certainly cost more than they show the prize value to be. :)

Good idea, but I do think all reuse / environmentally conscientious groups should be included. That would be a true GREEN movement.

  15. frank says:

why ain;t groups like reuseit included in your earthday celabration why is it just about freecycle when there are a lot of other recycle groups out there

  16. Raluca says:

    Hi!
Is this campaign available also in Romania? There are currently four groups here and I am moderating the Freecycle Timisoara group. I am interested in stimulating the members with your help.
    Thanks

    Jamie

Did you get my email about this topic?
In a nut shell, we groups who are not with Freecycle any longer, are excluded from participating.

We were banned from joining the Flickr group that Freecycle opened to promote Yahoo Green. We were told that Yahoo had opened a group for ‘other reuse’ groups, yet the page never mentions there is another place to upload photos since only Freecycle groups are welcome to upload to the site mentioned.

So much for working together and who cares about the environment?

This is not what freecycling was to be about, excluding some is it?

    Hello Eric,

I’ve sent a note to the folks who developed the site to see if we can get the Fullcircles groups added.

    Thanks!

  19. EDWARD SCHWARZMANN says:

“Free is Good” microsite: http://green.yahoo.com/earth-day featuring Freecycle and other Reuse groups.

Perhaps this should be edited to read ‘ SPECIALLY SELECTED’ reuse groups, since Yahoo is so heavily biased towards Freecycle (TM) sites to the exclusion of non-TFN sites by including TFN sites that have credentials tgat disqualify non-TFN sites.

  20. john cutter says:

I note that the Yahoo Homepage gives lots and lots of room to Global Warming and very little if any to those with other views. I don’t appreciate any website that promotes one agenda over another. Is Global Warming settled science? I think not and those who have a different take on the issue are ignored by Yahoo and way too many in the media. Is Global Warming real? Quite possible. I’d just like to see reports on and from the other side for some balance rather than being fed the line by Yahoo and it’s favorites. No offense meant but it does offend me.

  21. frank says:

i aggree with david simmons this should not be just about freecycle groups but all recycle groups my local freecycle group is run by a control freek who also has a resale group very much tied into her freecycle group whats up with that ?

  22. Eric Snyder says:

How do we contact the folks who are populating the map of groups. Some Canadian Fullcircles groups are missing from the map, eg. Fullcircles Ottawa – 9200+ members; FullCircles Barrhaven (900 members) as well as the Ottawa Freecycle group 1800 members.

  23. David Simmons says:

If this was *really* about ‘other reuse groups’ than Freecycle, it would be great, but it is pretty clear that Freecycle dominates and not because they are the biggest/best.

Maybe being more inclusive, and less exclusive to The Freecycle Network would be good.
