Would you prefer to have Groups communications delivered right to your email? If so, you should consider joining the Moderator Central Group.

Moderator Central is a valuable resource for moderators for several reasons:

  • The Groups team uses this group to send out official communications, like heads up on scheduled maintenance and downtime, periodic Groups Weather Reports (which summarizes the latest news on known issues that may be affecting users), tips & tricks for new and advanced moderators, and feature stories (essentially the same communications that you can find here on the Groups blog, only delivered right to your email).
  • Moderators can connect with one another on the group’s Message Boards to ask questions and share advice.
  • Moderators can find a plethora of resources developed by the Groups team.
  • Moderators can submit their product suggestions.

Please note that Moderator Central is an announcement only group for the Groups team to use to send official communications to moderators which means that subscribers can’t post messages, but you can always leave comments for us here on the blog.

We want to hear from YOU!

I’d like to hear from moderators what additional resources you’d like to see on Moderator Central to make it more valuable.

Additionally, I’d like to add a new “Tip of the Week” module – with tips that come from our community of expert moderators.

Submit your suggestions for improvements to Moderator Central as well as the valuable tips you’d like to impart by commenting below.

Thanks & Happy New Year!

I would like more control over what is member only and public.
    For example:
Members only can post photos, the world can look at them.
Members only can post messages and members only can see messages.

Finally my group is set to members only for everything, and I cannot find any place to edit these settings.

I’m so new to all of this I’m not even sure what the true definition of “spamming” means. I’m going to look it up right after this entry.
    Stay safe.

  6. Denise says:

Bring back the additional message screen when inviting members, and make it optional, not mandatory to include a message with the invitation.

I would like to be able to add color, bold, italics, etc. to the font in the text files! Also would like to add pictures. I have Windows Vista which came with OpenOffice and no one can open documents unless they have OpenOffice which no one I know does! So I have to send people plain (boring to look at) text files!

I’m willing to take any kind of help, so I can run my group better. Also, find a way so people would want to join my group. I think all of this is great.

  11. Bob R says:

Have better ways of dealing with automated spam bots. Over the last month it’s got out of hand, with two people signing up with multiple accounts and posting spam. I’m wasting too much time on this, to the point of seriously considering closing down the affected group..

In the current case, if I could have a way of banning by patterns it would help, since the two people keep creating accounts with the same starting pattern and a sequential number at the end. e.g. tutorial4u***

RSS for members only group! I don’t want it for just a public group because mine is not public. At least give us an option to do this!!

  14. jessejames49us says:

I would like to see a choice for the files section where I can, as a moderator, approve what goes in just like the photo section!!

  15. hello,
I would like to perform some housekeeping chores. specifically, I send 2 reminder messages at the beginning of each month, and I’d liket to delete the old ones.

I perform a seach, but there is no way for me to “check the box” and delete them. What about it? Yahoo! Can you change this so blocks of msgs can be deleted?
    Thanks

  16. Dave says:

Yahoo’s policy on “mature content” appears to be an all-or-nothing approach at this time. If a site contains any material that is not “G” rated, they must either be registered under the “Adult” category, or they risk being banned.

Registering under the Adult category prevents these groups being found by searches, and surrounds them with distasteful ads for porn sites and similar offensive material. Surely Yahoo! can change their approach to this issue?

May I suggest that groups could be posted in any area, but declare their “rating” as per a standard similar to movies? I.e., group content might be rated “G,” “PG,” “R” or “X,” as determined by the owner. Yahoo! might continue to ban search access to “R” or “X” rated sites (or perhaps open search access to these for users who have paid for their Yahoo! accounts with a CC and registered their age as adult), but allow open searches on both “G” and “PG” rated materials. This would allow Owners to use the group sorts much more effectively, yet keep access safe.

    Thank you!

    Dave

  17. Dave says:

I am a member of a group where recently the Owner’s e-mail was canceled for reasons not made clear to her. The same thing happened with her only Mod: as a result, neither of them can work with the group, and it is effectively dead.

    1) What can be done to restore their access to the group, so they can get it running again?

    2) The Yahoo! groups community is littered with many other dead groups, either abandoned by owners or perhaps for technical issues like the above. Usually these groups become dumping grounds for spam, and little else. They clutter the search engine results as well as using up your server space. It would be a huge improvement if you could send e-mails to the assigned Owners & Mods of such groups, requesting some action or response, and if none was forthcoming in 30 days, eliminate the group.

    Thank you!

    Dave

  18. Dave says:

I just tried to create a new group, and received an error message listing (code-9998). I presume this code refers to a certain type of problem, and that if I had access to the right link, I could find out what the problem was. That might help me determine if I just need to wait for Yahoo! to resolve it, or if I need to do something myself.

Could a link (or file describing the problem codes) be posted to Moderator Central?

    Thank you!

    Dave

  19. James O' says:

Many of my members are novice Internet users. They often complain of not being able to find the “Files” link. I have done all than I can to direct their attention.

    1) I would like to see the links on the left side of the screen to be changed to a bolder and darker color and to have a more contrasting background.
    2) Color schemes are nice, but I would like to modify more of the display content. I would like the links table to be n the right side of the screen.
    3) It would be nice to have a picture next to a member’s name.
    4) Amoung the Group Email Addresses, could a group moderator address be added to the list?
    5) I wouold like to see at the top of the screen- “To become a member of this group send an E-mail to…” The present location is over looked.
    6) We may soon need more server space.

    Keep p the good work.
