Planned down time on November 18th…we’re upgrading our servers

Update : the systems upgrade has been postponed see blog post.

We’re upgrading our systems and Yahoo! Groups will be unavailable for a few hours on the night of November 18th Pacific Standard Time. Emails sent to your groups will be delivered late during this time. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this planned downtime.

We would be posting updates as we approach the planned upgrade date and during the upgrade as well.

The upgrade is to the hardware systems running Yahoo! groups only.

  2. Thanks for the announcement before upgrading servers. i have a question that it effects our personal yahoo emails? If not then it will be okay.

  3. Sam says:

Hope everything goes fine and YahooGroups will be backed with more exciting features :)

  4. Shal Farley says:

    Thanks for the advance warning!

Can you tell us if the upgrades will have noticeable effects, such as eliminating the database sync problem that has plagued group memberships for the last few years (but have seemed to have gotten worse in the last year)?

In your announcement, you have used the words “upgrade” and “maintenance” both in the same paragraph to refer to the same process.
There is one hell of a big difference between “maintenance” and “upgrade”! So, you should never do that. Maintenance continues the status quo of things, but upgrading changes things significantly, and we hope that this is for the better.
Let me give an illustration. If we send our cars to the garage to have their spark plugs and oil changed, that is maintenance. The car remains the same, but only small items that get worn have been replaced routinely.
In total contrast, someone might send his car to the garage to have its four-cylinder engine replaced with a larger six-cylinder engine. He wants more power and speed! That is certainly an upgrade.
Also, someone might decide to get rid of his/her small Nissan and replace it with a Mercedes Benz. That is certainly an upgrade in cars.
