This is the second in a series of blog posts to introduce you to the remodel of Yahoo! Groups.
Today’s post will be focused on Group Descriptions.
- How do members find Group Descriptions?
Initially, you may have seen the information icon located to the left of the group name for group members to access the Group Description.
After your feedback about how difficult the icon was to find, we decided to replace the icon with the About tab in the left navigation bar.

This tab is always visible to all group members. When members click on the tab, they will see a larger version of the group image, group description, group information, and group email addresses.

- How do visitors to my group access Group Descriptions?
Visitors to your group, on the other hand, will always see this information by default.

They will also see additional tabs in the left navigation bar (such as Messages) only if the group has enabled those features to be available to Anyone.

Visitors can learn more about a group and then easily join using the prominent Join Group button.
- How do I make changes to my Group Description?
Group owners and moderators can access the Group Description via the Management Tab in the Left Navigation Bar.

You will see an alert notifying you that the management settings haven’t been remodeled yet.

Just click the “Continue” button and you will see the management settings you are already familiar with.
To change your Group Description:
- Under the “Group Settings” section, click on “Description & Appearance” on the right column.
- Click on the “Edit” link to the right of “Description” in the second row.
After making your changes, click on “Save Changes” at the bottom of page and your Group Description will be updated.
Learn more about editing your Group Description here.
The next in the series will focus on Members, privacy, and Settings. Stay tuned!
Yahoo! Groups Team
Hi Dear Friends
Hello
For two days I have had hit or miss with messages to my group.
CATT-Calling American Thatters Team.
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/CATTeam360TakeThat/
I understabd you guys are busy with the rollout,
but groups still have to run properly regardless of the upgrades.
I have sent several message to CC about the problems to my group.
Everytime we have a problem on the weekends , there is no one to help us.
It seems to me, before we upgrade to the “New Yahoo Groups” can we get the problems with Yahoo, groups the basic problems fixed.
Hopefully, this too wil pass, or be fixed.
Thanks
Lisa
I do not appear in the image collections do not know why
Is it the update or what
This is outrageous! I have suddenly been removed from all of my groups because I was forwarding emails to our mod group. We set this group up for mod communication and to save important information that we had saved in email. We are trying to consolidate to save space on Yahoo’s email program. This was a result of Yahoo suddenly deleting my fellow mods emails without notice. Moderators need time to deal with these changes in advance!!!!
mails are taking way too long to be sent..please fix it…and stop doing stuff to yahoo…now nothing is working.
* Why did you take away the ‘reply to sender’ option?
Due to popular demand this feature is back.
this never worked for me. when I click, “reply to sender” it always defaulted to the group not the sender.
Also I have filled out several request to yahoo help about how I left a group a couple of years ago, and still receive email from this group almost everyday. No response!!! I have sent several. I go to the group and it says I AM NOT A MEMBER!! but yet I still receive emails. I unsubbed from the group, NOT through email. Can you help?
hi my dear
we can only hope and pray Yahoo…or should I say Yahell has rolled back their stupid idea so as to not lose so many of their clubs and members. This I doubt as it seems that they don’t listen to what their members want. As someone already said…if I wanted facebook I’d be in facebook and not Yahoo.
Only a group among the 31 I’m a member or moderator of has switched to the ‘new look’ a couple of weeks ago. Strangely, last night it has swiched back to the ‘old look’. Did anyone notice the same ? Is there any reason why the Yahoo! Groups team did that ???
Anyway, I prefer the old look, and most members of my groups too.

Hey Will,
For sure I downloaded a copy of that ‘magic formula’ image. NOW the penny drops.

I think the poster ‘meehawl’ nails it.
Let’s discuss.
Regards,
Gritz.
Looks like I’m not the only one against these changes. Maybe six or seven people out there like them, but review of the close to 1000 comments on the Suggestion Board and review of all the comments made in the various message strings here in the Groups Blog reveals that opinion against the change isn’t close, isn’t decisive; it’s complete. Six or seven outliers or fans of the new format are statistically zero.
So, Yahoo, when will you finally stop the rollout and integrate all the things the owners, moderators and members are telling you?
BACKGROUND:
I own more than 50 active professional technical groups, more than a decade old with many thousands of members. I’ve been able to thrive through changes from usenet to a listserver, to onelist to egroups, and through yahoogroups.
EXAMPLE:
One of my world class technical groups has 9115 members and 10 full time moderators… 300 messages per month, and every message is approved by a human moderator. This group has forged a whole new category in the communications electronics field… to the extent that the name of the group has actually become the new technical word (verb and noun) to describe this new field of endeavor. It is the first place to go for researchers in this field.
NOT A SOCIAL NETWORK:
These groups are NOT Social Networks…
these groups are Informational Resource Networks.
INFORMATIONAL RESOURCE NETWORK:
Yahoo should recognize what a unique valuable property it has with YahooGroups as Informational Resource Networks (IRN), and trumpet it to the world! This network is the envy of many internet companies. Yahoo should make better tools to utilize it, or spin it off for profit. But, it should not be destroyed like this.
YAHOO PUSHING AWAY PROFESSIONALS?
Professional and technical people flock to these groups for the information they provide. Yahoo, did your management decide to push away all these technical and professional groups?
MASS EXODUS FROM YAHOO GROUPS?
Yahoo, did you make a corporate decision to force technical/professionals to go elsewhere, such as free web forum and mail-to-forum software on private domain websites? Yahoo, do you truly think you can mold such a savvy user base like clay, or leverage it in a jealous desire to become another faceybook wannabe?
LOGIN DOES NOT CAPTURE USERS ANYMORE:
Gone is the day, when Yahoo’s user account login was strong enough to keep its users captured within the walls of its portal. Users are now familiar with managing logins of many sites fluidly. Users now vote with their feet.
MAINTAIN DIGNITY OF EACH GROUP:
Please do not insult our dignity by turning our professional information resource groups into pitiful imitations of teen pages with smiley-face images. Removal of the description home page is a true insult to the group and its members, and a decrease in the usefulness of the resource.
THOUSANDS OF USERS SAY NO:
It is clear from 99% of the thousands of comments yahoo has received on this abomination… Yahoo has misunderstood the user base of yahoo groups. The newbie team working on yahoo groups does not even understand what yahoo groups is.
Yahoo you are wrong, and your error will destroy Yahoo Groups.
. . .
It’s happening as we speak. I belong to 20+ groups; 5 of them have been rolled out as of today and it’s not pretty.
I just want to know when this change is happening. I’m sick of hearing sometime in the next week or so, I’ve been hearing that for 2 weeks now.
Yahoo Clubs – Delicious – Flickr – Geocities – Yahoo 360 – Yahoo Pulse – Yahoo Finance – Panama – Musicmatch – Yahoo Jukebox – and now Yahoo Groups.
