Issue Update: photos, file access, email delay, and message search

We’re currently aware of the issues that several of you are reporting concerning photos, files, and email. We will update this post as soon as these issues have been resolved, or we have more information to share with you all. In the meantime, these remain top priorities of our engineering teams.

Photos: When creating a new photo album, or uploading new photos to an existing album, the images are not displaying (or show a “red x” despite a successful upload. UPDATE: This issue has been resolved. If you are still seeing this problem, please contact Customer Care.

File access: over the past few days some of you were having trouble accessing your files, and were often receiving an error message. UPDATE: This issue has been resolved. If you are still seeing this problem, please contact Customer Care.

Email delay/posting issues: In a handful of groups, members and moderators are noticing a delay when sending or receiving group messages. (Additionally a few groups have reported that some messages are not posting at all). UPDATE: For more information on this issue please the post found here: http://www.ygroupsblog.com/blog/2009/10/12/groups-mail-delivery-hotmail-yahoo-sg-accounts/

Message search: We know we’re long overdue for a lengthy post about this, but the short story is, we’re currently waiting on new hardware that will support all of the messages and groups on the Yahoo! Groups system. In the meantime we are slowly moving over a small amount of groups each week to the new message search system. We know that you all have been incredibly patient with us– this is greatly appreciated.

Login Requests: A handful of you are still reporting that you’re still repeatedly being asked to log in. Please report this issue to Customer Care, using this link: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/original/members/forms/general.html and provide your browser and operating system information. Please also let us know whether or not you are experiencing this issue on other Yahoo! properties (ex: Mail, Finance, Buzz, etc.)

My group, MandH_Appleseed, is experiencing e-mail delays. I posted early this a.m. and now, 6 hours later, haven’t received my message. Interesting enough, the new posts appear on our YahooGroups web page, but not in my e-mail client (Entourage). Thanks in advance for resolving this issue.

I created a new Photo Album yesterday and added two photo’s in it.
The photo’s didn’t show up in the Album; so I added them again. Only one photo showed up as a thumbnail, but when I tried to open it, I only got a blank page. I than tried to remove the photo and the album, but all I got was the error message: “We were unable to find the specified album. Error code : 1002″.

Will they reject me……I dunno…I have been waiting since early early yesterday morning to post some merchandise in 2 different groups, but it keeps on saying my membership is awaiting approval…..maybe I will just delete the request and give up.

help is most likely on the way.

a few weeks back i had trouble loading photos and now, oddly enough, the big green checkmark saying upload is complete appears about the same time the last photo starts uploading according to the progress bars.

yes, the completion icon appears while the uploading icons are still active.

we did update our antivirus software, switched to a new provider which keeps resetting my Yahoo homepage to the old one. and my group problems disappeared.

We’ve experienced the delay in emails also but now our growing concern in about messages being sent to the group. For the last few days our group has only been receiving a few postings from our members (over 5,000) and our average is around 100 per day. Is this a bug or Yahoo problem possibly?

Items listed in the menu are basically unreachable beyond the messages. When I go to Management I see this “Pending Tasks
Pending Tasks are currently unavailable.”. So I would say the group right now is dead in the water. Hope someone looks into this mess.

Beginning at about 12:30 PM PDT today (10/11/09), I have been unable to approve messages or access the Links and Files area of at least 2 groups that I own and moderate. In addition, when attempting to move from one group to the other, the famous Yahoo! 999 page is presented. “No Activity” is shown on groups where there in fact has been activity. “Access to pending messages is temporarily unavailable” is shown on the message approval page. “Network transmission problem” is displayed on the Links page. Access to the Files area results in an extended hang time and no access. I use FF 3.5 as my primary browser but am experiencing the same issues with IE 8 and Google Chrome. It’d be helpful if, when you update a blog post like this, you include the date with the update text. In this case it would’ve told readers when the issue was supposedly fixed.

The blue Reply button is gone on all 3 of my YahooGroups….!!!!! Geezz Please put it back……
I am a member of 3 groups. For several weeks, I cannot “Reply” to the messages from my Yahoo email. All that opens up is a blank page and that is after sliding to the very bottom and clicking on reply to sender. I have to open up 4 windows to get to the page for answering or posting to a group. Now that is frustrating and annoying. For me, I have almost quit answering and trying to help.
That page change is from Yahoo and how it is sent out to our email boxes. Previous messages on the topic are no longer in the email, and the cleaned up email sent from Yahoo makes replying undesirable and for some can be redundant in answering it…..
I sent a Technical note to Yahoo once already. Got no response. After many many hours of searching I found this page, with another person with the same problem….

ClickerSolutions is a huge list for dog training. It has a very extensive archive, nearly 200,000 messages, which is used by numerous members to research and solve dog training problems. Message search is virtually non-functional. We hope we can have some priority in the switch-over as a lot of people are being impacted by this. Thank you!

It’s now over 2 months since the last info on “Message search”, saying a lengthy post is overdue and stating new hardware is needed. If indeed new hardware is the only solution then a lengthy message should not be necessary, just an update on the expected delivery time of such. But it’s beginning to look very much like the false dawn in the earlier promises of groups being switched over to the new system “in the next two weeks” (17/3/09) – it is hard to believe there is a serious plan to fix this after so many months and lack of updates.

OK, so this service is free, so we have no grounds to complain, but if there was a way of transferring the message archives out to an alternative provider I’m sure many would be keen to do that – implementing a search on each individual archive should be an easy job in its own right. Anyone considering starting a new group should think seriously about whether there is going to be adequate support to run it!

We really urgently need the “Search” function fixed, as we presently have a team of members on stand-by to systematically archive the 60,000 posts made to our Group over the last 4 years since its inception. We listed our Group’s name down several months ago for early adoption of the Search technology that you’re now developing – would you like us to re-submit those particulars? – Thanks for your approachability on matters such as this.

  59. Charles said,

MY group (Bluegreen) too is frustrated by the lack of searching anything more recent that March 2009. As a group owner I have to continually handle the flack of unhappy members but more importantly the usefullness of the archives is greatly diminished. Each of us can’t save every message on our own hard drives.

  60. Stephen Welch said,

    January 20, 2010 @ 5:33 pm

Still no updates on fixing search as the anniversary is now in sight? Presumably there is a prospect now that it will never be mended, and the value of many groups is compromised because they can’t be effectively used when messages can’t be found. Anyone know if there is any chance it could be arranged these archives could be effectively searched via Google? I find Google does get relevant messages but the search result seems to be biased to older messages and not comprehensive. Course the older messages are the ones we can still find via the yahoogroups search but perhaps a time will come when this is a viable alternative, when there are no other options?

  61. Stephen Welch said,

    January 29, 2010 @ 2:30 pm

Every yahoogroup has a link at the top of the messages page “Having problems with message search? Fill out this form to ensure your group is one of the first to be migrated to the new message search system.”

The top of this page includes a statement from yahoo that “In the meantime we are slowly moving over a small amount of groups each week to the new message search system”.

In the absence of any more info on fix of message search it would be nice if either the link was removed or some info provided on the total number of groups prioritied and fixed so far. Why offer hope of a solution when it seems there is no realistic prospect of anything actually happening – far better simply to state that it’s going to stay like this for the foreseeable future, then users have a proper basis for deciding what to do next.

Message search is still not working for our group, despite reporting it many, many times. This makes our group less efficient as people are asking questions that have been answered already so we are spending a lot of valuable time rehashing info that has already been posted. Members are getting extremely frustrated and are leaving our group. Please fix this for us!

Ok I’m pretty sure we’re hitting well over the year (or possibly 2 year) mark for the message search feature not working correctly. I can’t even recall the golden days when it had worked properly. My group has been insanely active since it’s creation back in 2002.

Will the message search EVER get updated?

I’m remaining patient- but really… to wait over a year for an issue this important to not get resolved quickly?
I guess all I can do is patiently wait some more…
Maybe I’ll post another comment after the next ‘year’ mark is hit to see if there has been any progress on this seemingly ‘impossible’ to fix bug on yahoo.

  65. ice said,

    February 17, 2010 @ 11:14 pm

There must be an echo in here… The search feature still isn’t working on a single group I’m in. I’ve personally filled out the form to move each of the groups over to the new system many months ago, but there’s no indication that this has happened. There is no longer even any mention on the groups’ online pages that there is any problem, no form to fill out, nothing. But if that’s supposed to be indication that our groups have been moved over to the new system, then your new system isn’t working either, because the search feature still isn’t working!

Most people I know are not aware of this problem, and they are doing searches, believing their results to be complete. How about some honest disclosure in the online pages of the groups, so that people at least have some understanding of the limitations we’re dealing with here?! Not everyone even knows about this blog, nor should we all have to track down this information ourselves upon realizing there’s an issue. DISCLOSE and INFORM!

Incidentally, I’ve noticed that Yahoo’s search feature isn’t just broken in groups, but is totally unreliable in Yahoo mail as well. One day I get complete results, another day I can’t find the very email I just had open. Some days it changes from one minute to another. For a company that runs a search engine, this is SCANDALOUS!
