Repeated login requests for groups users

UPDATE– September 14, 2009 @ 3pm PT: We believe we have found the root of this problem and have fixed the issue. However, if you are still seeing this issue please leave a comment below and/or email me directly at yahoogroups[at] yahoo-inc[dot] com. In the email, please include your browser and operating system information (what version, etc.) so we can better diagnose the problem. Thanks!

Several of you have reported that when visiting your groups, you’re repeatedly asked to enter your password in order for you to proceed. While this is the expected behavior if you haven’t logged in two weeks, or, are attempting to add users to your group, this should not be happening when you’re simply trying to access a group or post a message through the web.

We are currently investigating this issue, but believe that users who recently upgraded to the newest version of Firefox (3.5.2 or 3.5.3) are impacted by this problem. Additionally, users of IE 7 and 8 are also reporting problems. We are currently investigating the issue for all browsers and are working to resolve the problem as soon as possible.

Until the issue is resolved, we suggest using a different browser for the time-being (some users have reported stability when using alternate browsers). Or, you may participate in your groups by posting messages via email.

If you are experiencing other issues (member lists not updating, etc.) please also contact Customer Care as that is likely a separate problem.

Customer Care: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/original/members/forms/general.html

We’ll be sure to update you all here as soon as we have more information and/or the issue is resolved. Thanks for your patience!

Don’t blame Firefox. I use Internet Explorer (and always have) and tonight I’ve had to log in at least eight separate times, for no good reason, though mainly when I’m trying to reply to a message or use the back button to return to the list of messages from the message I just finished reading.

I also use Intnet Explorer (and always have), but now I have this problem too. Mostly when switching between my e-gtroups, and with no good reason since I log in daily. And now, more than the log in problem…. Seems that I cannot reply to messages in my groups via the web page (which I have almost always done, I rarely reply via e-mail). When I try to reply, I get a notice that the message (number xxxx) cannot be retrieved. THis is very frustrating, this is NEW problem, and, again, it’s not Firefox. I use Interntet Explorer and no other broweser. Hope you can solve this, soon.

I agree, somethings wrong at Yahoo. And while it seems more frequent in FF 3.5.3, I did see it in both Opera and IE last night.

There’s no need to actually login to get by the prompt though. For instance, I use a link in FF’s bookmarks toolbar to go to MyGroups page. I can just hit that again and usually (always?) the MyGroups page will show without being misdirected to login page.

Alternatively, I can just hit the back button in the browser and then re-click the link. Like when this happens while viewing, editing, or approving pending messages in a group.

It would seem there’s a failure to detect the login cookie set in the browser. Maybe a relatively few servers out there have a malformed check for the cookie or a time-out issue? Maybe some browsers respond differently making the latest FF more prone to this problem than others?

If, during the login process, you check the Keep me Signed in two weeks box, you will not have this problem. I believe it is just a function of the large number of people logged in at any one time that causes folks to be “dropped” after short periods of inactivity.

Yes, I’ve got the same problem with my groups, whether I’m a moderator or a member of. You warn me about adult contents, then I accept, then you warn me again… and sometimes you ask me to sign in… and sign in again… and sometimes it eventually works and often it doesn’t.

I always connect to the Yahoo! Groups through Internet Explorer.

no problem logging in, using the latest update on FF, BUT:

not been able to access pending message since 9.30am error: (access to pending messages in temporarily unavailable)

messages being approved via email, have not shown up

Activity with members not moderated has dropped to, 5 messages all day so far, which for our group is never heard of.

pending members if fine, so what’s the problem now?????? Getting really fed up with Yahoo!

It’s not just Firefox, but IE8 as well, so it is definitely a Yahoo! groups issue. I go to the group I own and it says no activity in 7 days, even though the last post is late last evening. A post was lost because of the log-in problem. I have also noticed that going to the home page of any of my groups, I get a front page like I am not a member of the group, but I am logged in, and when I click on the home link then I get the normal home page for members.

Melissa, my Firefox browser was updated to 3.5.2 on August 2, 2009. I never experienced this sign-in problem until shortly after midnight (Central Time) September 11, 2009. Could your team have been making changes in the member’s Profile around that time which could have triggered the repeated requests to sign in and requests for password?

I just went to my Profile>Sign In and Security. Found that mine was set to automatically sign out at 1 day. I changed that to sign out every two weeks. The problem still continues. Hopefully this will add to clues for your team to figure out what’s going on.

The moderator and owner of the Private Wireless Forum group is also experiencing the log in / password problem (with IE8, FF 3.5.3, Opera 10, and Google Chrome browsers) since early on 9/11 and, beginning today, the groups home page indicates “no activity” when in fact there has been. Also, the “keep me signed in…” option is missing. I’d say these are probably YG problems that need some attention rather than the result of a browser update.

This problem is persistent in either Fire Fox or Internet Explorer. Not today I can not use the http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/daysofourlives3/ groups Management section as nothing is available when I try to access it. The groups front page is showing No Activity in the past 7 days. The last post added to the group was on Sep 11, 2009 at 9:25 pm and I know I have posted several things to the group through my email. I am also having a problem with my email as it keeps sending me to a password prompt when I try to navigate the site. Hopefully this can be fixed ASAP as it is terribly frustrating as my group and email are very active.

It’s not firewalls or AV software or browser. I have the problem and I don’t have a firewall or an AV running. It’s something going haywire with Yahoo pages checking for a current login cookie/crumb. On some very few servers it’s not finding what its looking for. It happens more often with FF than IE and Opera. (I didn’t check Chrome because I don’t use it on Y!G.)

I’ve ran into this on Y!Mail servers sometimes – VERY rarely – for the past month or so.

As the moderator of two groups, I check the sites almost daily and send message every few days. So the “not using it for two weeks” thing isn’t true. I am also not happy that I don’t get answers from Yahoo but told to go to the moderator network.

I’m having the same problem and it has nothing to do with Firefox because I don’t use it. I get sent back to the login page repeatedly. Messages I’ve sent do not hit the sites on a random basis. I open up a group and am asked to “join” in when I should still be logged in. This is very frustrating, but it has nothing to do with Firefox. I use Internet Explorer and always have. This started yesterday for me. When will it be fixed?

I am having both the repeated login request (I use IE), and since around 8am EST on Sept 12 I have been having the NO ACTIVITY and no access to the PENDING folder. Also, I have sent messages to the groups but the total for the PENDING folder is the same now (after several hours) as it was before I sent the messages.

This is just with the larger groups. My 153-member group is not experiencing the PENDING/NO ACTIVITY problem. There was a similar divide between large and small groups when we were having problems adding new members.

The bigger problem I am having today is with mail delivery. NO emails appear to be going through on the smaller groups or if they do eventually go through it is a goodly number of hours after they were sent.

I’m having the repeated password request problem using the Web interface (not email). I’m using IE 8. Sometimes it’s just when I want to move from one page to another, sometimes it’s when I want to Reply to a message, and still other times–most infuriating of all–after I’ve typed in a Reply, in which case whatever I’ve typed in is lost.

I’m also getting error messages saying:

Your browser is not accepting our cookies. To view this page, please set your browser preferences to accept cookies. (Code 4)

    Try Again

When I click Try Again, I can usually get to the page I want to view, although sometimes I have to do this twice.

The work-around posted works; I’ve been using it all day. Haven’t logged into
Yahoo once during all these prompts. Just go back (back button or backspace or alt-left arrow) and try the link again and it usually (always?) seems to work.

Groups pages that normally check for a fresh login every 2 weeks, or whatever time out you opt your account login to have, are the ones that seem impacted with this problem. It’s like the server sending the page is unable to verify the login cookie set in one’s browser by Yahoo!

Don’t suppose you can fix the message search function that used to work perfectly fine before while you’re at it. Seriously I’m starting to think moving all my groups to google groups or Ning is a better idea. There always seems to be something with Yahoo groups and when you mod/own a large number of groups it’s extremely frustrating. I’ve had members complaining their posts are going thru hours late (some up to 12 hours after posting) and other lists where posts are coming thru 3 times over .

  47. Josette Grver said,

    September 13, 2009 @ 6:22 am

As many people have said it’s not just a problem with firefox, I used google chrome and had the same problem. On two separate occasions, it seems to have started after yahoo started removing spam groups last weekend and got a bunch of new groups that weren’t spam as well.

I log in nearly every day, in fact thursday I had just clicked on the keep me logged in for two weeks button and still got the password screen. So clicking the button to be logged in for two weeks isn’t the answer.

The first time I had yahoo mail open as well, when I signed in for yahoo groups it kicked me out of mail. And when I signed back into mail, it kicked me out of groups. This went on for about ten minutes until I was finally able to get the group I needed (had to refresh the page since it didn’t recognize me as a member) and get the information I needed.

    Browsers firefox 3.5.2
Google Chrome (not sure the version number)

I don’t think it’s a browser problem because I have Opera, and my friend, whose computer I’m using now, has IE.

Almost everything I do on my groups brings me to the sign in page (with both browsers). Then, after I sign in, yet again, I’m asked to re-enter my password.

All I can say is that everybody above who has commented seems to have gotten off very lightly. I have had all the problems listed above, on and off for over two weeks. Yes that’s right two weeks, but then I am registered through Yahoo7 the Australian arm of Yahoo.com and everything has been in a shambles for about two months now. First it was the email side of things, mail being unable to be read because the font size became so tiny, the list of emails being jammed into a column about 2 inches wide on the extreme right hand side of the monitor, colour disappearing from the pages, being prompted to change to all-new mail but being unable to because as soon as you tried an error message saying that all-new mail was unable to run with (I don’t know with what because the dialogue box was cut off part way through and couldn’t be increased to see what it said) and that is just for starters and not once did I get a reply to the messages I sent to Customer Care. If I didn’t have an extra long fuse I would have blown up and demolished the little township I live in.

Fixed!!!! I think not. Those who can now access with no problem are indeed the lucky ones. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, IE8 and the latest Yahoo Toolbar. I am still having repeated prompts to enter password, unable to access my Group as moderator etc etc etc. Web page tells me I am logged out, but ‘Toolbar Settings’ on the new Yahoo toolbar says I am logged in – even though the Yahoo Mail icon on the toolbar says I am not!! I set the group up to see how useful it would be; like a number of other users I suspect now that if and when I do manage to access my group my first action will be to delete it!

You will not be able to sign in to Yahoo! services unless you provide the information requested on this form. This information will help you reset your password in case you ever forget it.

    Melissa,
I am doing as asked per your note dated 9/14/09.

I am running Vista; IE 8 version 8.0.6001.18813

I not only continue to get password prompts and not just with the groups feature, but it will not accept my password period. I have tried re-setting and changing my password. I receive the verification notice, I verify and try again to no avail. It simply will not accept my password!
This morning as on Saturday I cannot even access my general Yahoo account! It just will not accept my password! I cannot get in! I can get into my group’s homepage and I have not tried every feature, but to my knowledge I can do most anything else at this point. It has been months since I could simply click IE and open my browser where Yahoo is my homepage off my desktop or quick launch. I have to open Yahoo Messenger and click on the mail symbol there to enter anything to do with Yahoo. I dread the day when my 2 weeks run out and it is required for me to verify password again and that is gonna come up soon! I will be totally locked out of my group at that point if some solution is not found!

I’m not sure if I also need to send you an e-mail, but I think I will. I really need some solutions or my little group is dead in the water! I have contacted my mods this morning, but they all work so it may be awhile before I hear from them. I am going to see what is happening on their end as far a management tasks are concerned today.

    Thanks.

    Document Not Found
Sorry, the document you requested is not available.

Please click here to visit the Yahoo! Groups home page.

When I try the newest version it does give me the green checkmark indicating that the picture is uploaded but the uploading button just hangs there and the upload is never completed.

Is this an issue for everyone today?

How about “YAHOO MAINTENANCE OR PROBLEM” or something to denote it is a Yahoo situation rather than making it appear the group(s) are dead?

Some photos on various groups do not load. I have emptied the internet cache and cookies, refeshed, etc. to no avail. It is a Yahoo problem.

I am the owner and manager of thsi group and I am fed up with all the problems I face daily!

Being asked for my ID and password over and over again when I switch from the group to my email, when I try to add memebers (this is the worst nighmare), when I try to post or manage the group!

Then I also face additional problems due to the language. Our group is in Greek not English and this means:
    - Emails and notifications arrive in characters and forms to our memder’s inboxes (many do not use Yahoo mail so they can’t decode them
    - Emails and notifcations arrive in Russian! (why in Russian and not GREEK?)
    - Emails and notifications arrive in Greel but with weird characters (usually the euro sign and a line “l” before each and every word!

Recently, I am facing yet another problem. The page does NOT load in Greek even when I access the group through the email received from the group, and when I try to change the encoding it will NOT load at all or takes ages to load.

I know that you moved some of your servers to Europe (UK or Ireland) and I am wondering if this is what is causing us here in Europe (I am located in the Netherlands) all these problems that I mentioned above.

Please do something to solve them. Especially this multiple log in issue and the page load issue is getting seriously on my nerves!

    Thank you,
    Perla Messina

This is definetly a Yahoo problem. I have done everything conceivably possible across safari, chrome, ie7 &8,ff ,seamonkey. I have checked, doublechecked all my cookie settings to no avail. I can only read messages but have not been able to post anything to ANY yahoo groups for the last 2-3 months now. We have 5 pc’s & laptops at home all with different OS’s and browsers and the results are exactly the same. Repeated log-in requests for every new page despite checking the “keep me logged in for two weeks” box. Posting a message just brings up a log-in page and then I’m directed to my yahoo home page after logging in and in the process losing my message. I think I will be suggesting a change to a different provider to all the Yahoo groups that I have an interest in because this is beyond ridiculous. I have repeatedly emailed Yahoo support and I dont ever get a reply. No wonder Yahoo cannot compete with Google.

Had the groups problem for months – but not email – and it finally peaked today when the whole thing blew up and Yahoo help had to install a new browser (FF) just to see mail. Why? Because “you have a browser problem – our systems are fine”. So help desk doesn’t know you have a problem or are supposed to have fixed it. Meanwhile IE8 continues to loop continuously from login to login.
And why on earth put a customer care contact URL that requires a login?!

We’ve identified the issue that a handful of you are still experiencing. It seems as though if you’re a partner user (as your email indicates you are) and you post/log into groups using your full email address, you may be getting hit with the eternal login loop. Now that we’ve been able to pinpoint the issue, we’re working with membership (the people who manage the login page and your account details) to get a fix pushed out asap.

    Thanks for your patience.

I have received automated messages saying that there are subscription requests awaiting my approval at Yahoogroups. When I click on the link embedded within such a message, my web browser (Safari v4.0.3 under Mac OS 10.4.11) takes me to the YG log-in page. I enter my user id and password, and get taken back to the same page, with the fields for my user id and password. It seems like an endless loop. I’ve tried it at least a dozen times, each time with the same result.

I have been away for a couple of months and tried to log in to check and see what my co-moderators have been doing, etc – and all I get is a diagnosis page and it’s not MY end. I can log into other secure sites, but anytime I click and Yahoogroups “log in” – I get this basically blank page. I am not a newbie – have run several checks, rebooted, refreshed, etc. I am still using IE 7 – not ready to go to IE 8 yet for several reasons. I also have another Yahoogroups ID so I can go in as a “user” to see what they see, rather than a groupowner/moderator view – no luck there either. Most times can’t even get to a place to attempt to enter a log in and password. This has been going on for over 24 hours now – and am tired of it.

I can’t even go to the help section and click on send a message to tech support – so have come here, as it’s the ONLY place I can seem to get in Yahoo.

I have double and triple checked all on my end – and it’s not me and my connection is good – so that leaves a Yahoo problem!

I’m having the same issue with Yahoo Groups. It was working fine for a few hours, and then it started with the following message:

Your browser is not accepting our cookies. To view this page, please set your browser preferences to accept cookies. (Code 5)

Sometimes it returns a Code 0 instead.

Then again, sometimes it works without problem and then returns errors after some random period of time.

This is true in both IE and Firefox.
