RepDB Bug Affecting Big Groups

Update 8/6/09 7:00 pm PDT; 2:00 am GMT (8/7): The RepDB problem has been fully resolved and the system is again functioning normally for all groups on all four database clusters. We appreciate the patience people showed as we worked through this issue.

(Note: If you are still seeing problems in your groups, they have another cause. Please contact Customer Care so that we can investigate.)

This blog post was originally titled “New members not showing up on the member list”, but the problem is actually broader than that and I wanted to take a moment to fully explain.

As background, for groups with 350 or more members, Yahoo! Groups uses a “replicated database system“, which is a key component of the backend systems that have allowed Yahoo! Groups to scale to the size it has (100+ million users across more than 12 million groups, with some groups having more than a million members)

Unfortunately, we have a bug at the moment that is causing our “RepDB system” to back up and process incredibly slowly (most affected groups have not had a RepDB update since late on the 7/17). The impact on affected groups includes the following:

  • The member list will be out of date with new members not yet appearing on the list (though they will appear in the management logs, which are fully up to date), making it impossible for moderators to change the settings (or remove) these members.
  • Members who are not showing up on the member list will also not receive messages via email (although they can still read messages on the web or post via email).
  • Members who have recently unsubscribed (but who were set to receive individual emails or digests) will continue to receive messages from the group until the RepDB system is up to date.
  • Changes to email settings will not take effect.
  • Members who have been reactivated out of bouncing status will still not get email.
  • Exports from the member list will not be up to date (although “downloads” will be).

Apologies for the hassles we know this is causing. Solving this problem is the team’s top priority.

This has been a problem for the PLANTSWAP GROUP as well. We have new members who had joined a few days ago, and who are already posting in our group that do not appear on our member listing.

Also, we have members emailing me that they are making posts in the group but the posts are not appearing in the group.

    @Rachel,
Please have your group member report their issue (still receiving mail after unsubscribing) to customer care. (If you can’t get a hold of the user, you can report it as well).

USNCVA group is experiencing the same problem. Members claims 648 yet will only permit viewing 643 of the records. The last records that are viewable are from 17-Jul-2009. The newer members that do not display are actively posting messages.

It seems the membership database has not been updated for a few days. All new members joined in the last two days do not appear. Members who have unsubsribed are still receiving group mail, although their names are not in the membership database.

Also the message was sent to multiple groups simultaneously (cc’ed), it reached one of the groups and not to others. group name is ‘pravs’.

Checked 2 of my groups – neither shows the new members in the Membership List since 7/17.

I believe that the Bouncing Member Lists are affected by this too. One show 41 of 45 members, and the other shows 43 of 45 members bouncing. Neither group shows a bouncing as of date later than 7/17.

We are a group of almost 4000 members. Recently when our members put their account on temporary suspension, or attempt to resume e-mail deliveries after temporarily suspending deliveries, nothing happens. In some instances it has taken 3 to 4 days or longer for a member to begin receiving e-mails after a temporary suspension.

We have had some members unsubscribe and re-subscribe with no positive results.

I have what may be a related problem. I am owner of several large groups. I was away on vacation for two weeks and returned on Friday 17 July. my masteralexstocks@earthlink.net email address had gone into “bounce” status. I reactivated this address on Friday and cleared out the mailbox. I now receive owner and moderator alert messages from my groups but donot receive messages posted by members. My bounce status is normal on the masteralexsotcks@earthlink.net address but the account still shows up on the group bouncing members lists.

Could this be a related problem?

I think when yahoo or any supporting web hoster has a prob it would be alot easier if they flood the groups owners with a message, telling them of the problems,I only found out because I asked someone to join one of my groups as I wanted a co-owner,then when I tried to make them a owner im seeing no such match/no such member, yet I looked in management tasks and saw I did in fact approve them,I do know the last logged member approved on all my boards is July 17,so it seems yahoo knew of this problem since the 17th which was Friday of lasst week and here we are at wednesday the 22!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. Kirstie said,

Hi Mel, this is actually an easier problem to solve than the “getting no mail” problem. Most email clients (including Yahoo!Mail) have a “filter” feature. If you use this feature, all of the emails you receive from those groups can be automatically sent to a specific sub-folder. For example, in Yahoo!Mail you can hit the “options” linke, then choose filters. Then add a filter. In the “from header” line, you can enter the email of a specific group -fullgroupname@yahoogroups.com – and have it sent to a specific folder, so they don’t end up in your main email view. I’m not familiar with all email clients, but most of them do have a similar feature. Hope this helps.

This is happening with my group of 1500 members and it is not just frustrating. It is reaching the point where people are on the verge of losing their job because of it. They joined under their work email address as “individual emails” not knowing the volume of emails they would receive. They can’t get in to change their email setting OR to change their email address, because they aren’t listing in the member listing! I also have new members who are not getting emails and desperately need to get them. Some of our group members are almost on the brink of suicide when they join because of going blind. THEY NEED TO BE GETTING IN… AND OTHERS NEED TO BE ABLE TO CHANGE THEIR EMAIL SETTINGS. This is reaching “critical mass” right now and if they can’t fix it ASAP we need some personal help in our group site with a couple individual members before they lose their job or commit suicide! I emailed Yahoo twice begging for help and they ignored my emails. THIS IS URGENT GUYS… I don’t want to be sued due to having someone lose their job! Does YAHOO want to be sued for that??? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am surprised that so many people expect a system comprised of 12 million Yahoo Groups to work instantaneously. Just use email to communicate if you need “instantaneous”. When people unsubscribe from your group, how do they then complain to the group about continuing to receive messages ?

I enjoy it, when people whine about these timing problems directly to me.
I wish these timing problems were the only problems I had with yahoo groups.
If a lot of people are leaving your group then at some point you should
ask yourself “Why ?” rather than bothering yahoo with this minor problem

Guess what people, we work with technology. Things are bound to happen with the technology that need to be fixed. Just like if a virus gets on your computer, what do you do??? You try to get it removed, contact the anti-virus company to see if they have an update for that virus, and then you remove it. Can that be resolved quickly…yes. Can it take some time…yes. If you don’t like it when things happen online, then maybe you should go into a dark cave. Yahoo technicians are working hard to resolve this issue quickly. Will it happen in one hour? NO!!! They first have to find out what the issue is, try to correct it offline (testing) to make sure that it will work, and once they have a resolution, then they will publish it. As Gordon stated, with over 100 million users and 12 million groups, it will take some time to make sure that the correction that they make will not cause another bug for the smaller groups, or cause a widespread outage.

Please let the technicians do their job and trust that they will have this resolved as quickly as possible. I used to work for tech support for a bank’s website, and I know exactly what they are trying to do to resolve this, and sometimes, it takes a while.

    Please be patient.

  39. Shawn said,

    July 23, 2009 @ 2:18 pm

    @Karen…

Don’t think that if people sue Yahoo for losing their jobs, they will not. One, why is someone using work e-mail for personal items? Two, it is clearly shown on your groups home page the volume of messages that are sent (as of the time of this comment…475 new messages in 7 days, and 1,584 messages in the month of July alone). If people lose their jobs and attempts to sue Yahoo, they will lose as this is clearly shown on the page of what volume of messages there are for your group. And you think Yahoo is ignoring the e-mails?? How many e-mails do you think they are getting regarding this issue…thousands and thousands I’m sure. How can you expect customer support to respond to everyone regarding the exact same issue? Please be patient.

And if you cannot tell, I am on the side of Yahoo. I’m not a Yahoo employee, I dont’ have stock in Yahoo…I’m just speaking from experience with website technical support.

KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK GUYS!!!!

At least now I know why I haven’t been getting email from a large group thta I just joined. I don’t agree with deleting groups that have under 500 members. I do think that if a group hasn’t been active for a long period that maybe it should be deleted.

  41. Karen said,

    July 23, 2009 @ 3:52 pm

Shawn, most of our members do not go into our Yahoo group site when they join. They are joining from websites we have such as http://www.fuchsdystrophy.org. We have in our application right on top the number of emails, but -as the member who is be threatened with losing his job stated- reading it, and experiencing it are two different things. To be blunt, they were in a panic because they were told they are going blind and weren’t thinking. Once they are in the group we have MANY members who need to change which email account they are going to be using, individual to digest, etc. This particular one that is having the most trouble with work right now already left the group via his work email address and rejoined on a yahoo email address- that is, according to the management section. However, he is not listed under EITHER email address in the member section to be able to change his settings; and he is still getting the emails in his aol work email address even though the management section said he had unsubscribed with the address. We, and the member, are doing everything physically possible but we can’t stop the emails from coming in his work email and Yahoo isn’t fixing the problem. I’m not entirely sure, once this IS fixed, if the members we’ve put in- and those who have unsubscribed- will be in (or out) correctly; or if only the new changes will be working ok. In our group this is a HUGE mess, and getting worse by the day.

We have found that new members (since 7/17) are not getting messages and/or not having individual delivery changed to digest when they want it; It’s causing a huge problem and taking up a lot of time to let members know what’s going on.

People, they are working on it. They don’t have the ability to wave a magic wand and make the problems go away – they have to work with it.

If you are getting mail at an address you don’t want to get mail at, try setting that mail to filter the messages from that group to filter into a seperate folder, or forward to the address you want it to go to until it’s solved.

Karen, if you have people who are talking about committing suicide – then you need to refer them to crisis hotlines or contact the authorities where they live. If someone’s going to try to kill themselves because they aren’t getting emails or can’t stop getting them, then they have a problem greater that you can help with an email list. An email list should not replace trained mental health professionals.

Those people who are saying that it’s been a week and it hasn’t been fixed – they don’t have a magic switch they can throw and make it all go away. Be patient. They probably will have to fix it in steps just like they did when they were working on the upgrade.

Do you people think they are going to stop their work to continuously post updates? That would really make that fix take a lot longer. Let them do their jobs and get things back to normal.

On my list one of the people accidently approved a spammer who has already spammed at leaste 20 owner addresses, and it’s probably harvesting names from the list – fortunately, since it doesn’t show up, it shouldn’t get email.

They are doing all they can to fix this – give them time to do their jobs, ok?

By the way, my new members are not talking about committing suicide. Some of them are on the edge of it, though. Put yourself in their shoes. You’ve just been diagnosed with something that seemingly nobody has ever heard of, that could leave you blind- plus you could have given it to your kids and grandkids. A “suicide hotline” isn’t going to be able to help them. Only other people who understand this rare disease, and know what to expect, can help explain things to them and help try to keep them from losing their independence and sight. Only about 1-2% of the population has this eye disease; we’re finding out that most eye drs don’t even know enough about it except to MAYBE (if the patient is lucky) diagnose it- and then they send them to the internet (us) for information! We have a number of members who went from dr to dr because they couldn’t see and kept getting wrong answers until they finally found one who knew about this disease and diagnosed it- and then sent them to us on the internet for information and support.

I set my email in my big groups (BeadsandMore and Beadingaholics) to web-only before leaving last Friday night for my father-in-law’s funeral. I came back on Wednesday and edited my membership to receive individual emails again. Haven’t received even one at this point, but having found an explanation here, I’m able to calm down and be patient for a while longer. It’s just when I don’t know what’s happening that I freak out. These Yahoo updates just happen to coincide with an acquisition of my ISP, which means I have a new mail server that I hadn’t accessed until today – so I was wondering if their spam filter was intercepting my messages. But no, all is cool.

Take it as slowly and steadily as you need to, Yahoo… and get it right so we won’t have to go through it all again!

    Hi Karen,
I personally think that what you are doing by providing the group is commendable; however, NO system is 100% foolproof. And keep in mind that you are still, even with the tech issue, providing help to more people than you could have helped before the group existed. This tech issue is driving me crazy too and I’m sure some members who just joined are experiencing frustration – not only in your group, but in other affected groups. I’m not trying to minimize the issues your members are experiencing, but unfortunately sometimes the severity of the problem has nothing to do with the speed with which it can be resolved. :( I hope your group gets back to normal soon.

This is getting beyond a joke now. I’ve got membership details up until the 19th July then nothing.

We’re getting 3 or 4 mails per group per day from members asking why they are still getting emails even though they have set to “no mail” and we’re losing members left right and center as they leave the group trying to stop the mail.

This is the worst possible time for this to happen with many of our members going on holiday and trying to stop the 40-50 mails per day coming through from our group.

Update (7/24: 4:58 pm PDT, 11:58 pm GMT): We have good news and bad news to report on this bug:
    - The good news is that we’re making progress and the RepDB system has begun to catch up.
    - The bad news is that at that speed it will take a full week for the system to get back completely in sync, and we don’t yet have any way to move faster.

The upshot is that the issues described below will continue for another week, although gradually fewer and fewer users will be affected by the problem (i.e. they will begin to properly appear on the member list, have their subscribes and unsubscribed fully processed, etc.).

Meanwhile, it is possible for us to manually bring some groups up to date right away (although they will then begin to fall behind again until the system is fully caught up, since everything is dealt with sequentially). If your group is being particularly badly affected by this bug, and you would like to be manually reset, please contact Customer Care. We will try to help as many groups as we can in the short term but can’t guarantee we will be able to get to everyone before the system is fully caught up anyway.

It’s now July 28th. I joined several groups recently. I haven’t had a single email and now I find this is because of a problem that Yahell haven’t fixed in weeks.

Yahoo.co.uk is already the buggiest site on the internet.

The amount of revenue Yahoo must generate you would think they could have a few more people giving this a bit of priority.

    Yahoo totally sucks these days.

If a lot of people are leaving your group then at some point you should
ask yourself “Why ?” rather than bothering yahoo with this minor problem

    anwer to Bill
the problem is that some people join yahoo groups with their office ID
and then when they receive the mails they realize it’s too much for their office ID, or have complain from their boss, and want to leave the groups
    they should think before
others leave for vacations and want to set their ID to “no mails” for their absence
and are not able to do it actually and even the owners can’t because they don’t appear in the member list
and now they complain to the owners and we are not able to do anything for them
i don’t know how many members you have Bill, me i have 26600 members and i receive many mails everyday asking for help and some days i am just fed up !
i would like to use my time for more constructive things !

I’m one of the people who attempted to unsubscribe from a group, but am still receiving messages from it.
According to the group owner, I am showing as having been unsubscribed – so I guess it must be this particular problem.

Unfortunately, I cannot report the problem (as was suggested to Rachel, above) at http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/original/members/forms/general.html – as I do not have a Yahoo! ID, and I don’t think it should be necessary to sign up to an org in order to stop getting emails from them.

Surely this must be causing the Yahoo! MTAs to get blacklisted in a few places by now? I know better than to report all these mails as spam – but I’m sure that’s exactly what many people will do. I know it was supposed to take around a week to fix, but it’s been nine days since I unsubscribed now.

Is there a more up-to-date ETA on a fix? Or should I just black-hole yahoogroups.com on my mailservers for a few weeks?

I also have this problem. The membership list stops undating as at 18 Jul 2009.
SInce then when I add new members, the membership figure increases but I am unable to find these new members.

I have yet to receive any complains from my new members so they must be receiving the group mails. It’s just that I am unable to find them.

It is quite disturbing to have this situation since I have more than 1750 members.

    This is total rubbish Yahoo.

It’s July 29th now – no update since July 24th, no fix.

Is this the first stage of Yahoo getting rid of groups, because they are not functioning correctly now so there is little point having them.

    @ adamt

If you did have a Yahoo id it wouldn’t help you get an answer.

The only things which answer their emails are bots answers which bear no resemblance to the question. Please don’t even waste your time registering with this, the buggiest site on the internet.

existing members, some going on holiday, to de-stress, only to return to be stressed straight away, their SN email settings having not been implemented, new members, waiting to actually receive mail from the group, earliest date we have so far is 19th July, and still not receiving them, have now requested a manual reset as per http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/original/issues/memberlist.html we shall see. Very miffed and frustrated :(

I have asked for manual resets and so far have had no luck. I have 8000 messages being sent through my group every month so you can imagine the angry e-mails I am getting from people who joined not realizing how many e-mails they would be getting and receviing 300 e-mails a day. I have some people that are actually forwarding me their e-mails to “show me how it feels”. I have stopped approving memberships until this is resolved but there has to be some way to help these people that just want out and not to receive these e-mails anymore. When will be get another update????

As an Owner/Moderator of a Freecycle group with over 3200 members, I find it appalling that we have not been updated on this situation since the message that came out from Yahoo! groups on the 24th of July . Our group has had this probem since the 17th of July. The members are extremely unhappy, and as per norm, venting their frustrations on the Moderators. I understand that the techs are busy, and answering individual e-mails would be a waste of time. However, that’s no excuse for not taking 10 minutes to supply us with some sort of information. Not a good way to do business, nor appease the masses.

  74. Dom said,

    July 29, 2009 @ 12:09 pm

Chesapeakelady – only 3200 ? We’ve got exactly 5800 on the Wellingborough Freecycle group :-P

On a more serious note, I’ve just had this email through from a disgruntled member:

“Please stop sending emails do not want to belong to freecycle anymore.I asked to have them stopped while l was away to find l had over 1000 emails in 9 days had enough. Please remove my email address .Thanks.”

We work hard to build up our member base and when Yahoo lets down our members like this and we start losing members plus spending a lot of our own time explaining why they are getting all these problems its a bit disheartening.

  75. Kate said,

    July 29, 2009 @ 12:47 pm

Yahoo.co.uk has had a bug for months whereby you cannot verify an additional address.

Yahoo has done nothing to rectify this, what makes anyone here think that they really want to rectify Yahoo groups errors.

Yahoo groups must cost them a fortune in ’space’. Maybe they just want to shut them down as with all the websites they used to host.

  76. Chesapeakelady said,

    July 29, 2009 @ 3:30 pm

    Ah, but Dom…we are a small county in Maryland…only 250,000 residents. :o )

But back to the matter at hand!

We have gotten many e-mails from disgruntled members; they aren’t getting the Daily Digest, they aren’t getting e-mails, they are getting 100’s of e-mails while set to Special Notice. I now spend more time (with each succeeding day that this drags on) pacifying the members than I do approving/denying messages. How much longer do we have to drift through this limbo? Any guesses? We were told a week…I think perhaps that was wishful thinking on Yahoo! Groups part. One of my Mods was an IT person for one of the major phone companies here for over 20 years, and they said to me that if what has happened here happened to them, that they’d of been out of a job before you could blink an eye. Well, unfortunately (or perhaps, fortunately for the folks who work at Yahoo!) we cannot fire this group. We can continue to write and vent, but it doesn’t seem to matter.

I, along with countless others are getting frustrated with this continued bug with groups. When I requested an update a couple of days ago Melissa responded with a repeat of the one from the 24th, which most of us are familiar with. Thanks but that wasn’t what we were looking for.. What we do want now is an update on the status at the moment, not 5 days ago. I am being bombarded with emails from members of my groups asking when they can expect service to return to normal and I can’t give them any answers. People going on holiday can’t change their preferences and are going to return to overflowing mailboxes and no doubt problems with their ISP’s too.

How about it there Gordon or Melissa … what is the present status and projected fix date?

  80. adamt said,

    July 29, 2009 @ 7:05 pm

    @Chesapeakelady and @Dom,

I know of some people who refuse to use Freecycle because of the involvement of Yahoo Groups.

This comment is from a (non-Yahoo) mailing list, from about a month ago (before the RepDB bug hit):

“Freecycle “works” by you subscribing to a Yahoo Groups mailing list which is
hand-approved by somebody who takes so long to do so that you’ve already
disposed of the item… it will take you just as long to get off of the list.”

and from another message in the same thread:

“Freecycle group are mailing lists; you have to find and then sign up for
    your local one.
Unfortunately, they all use Yahoo Groups, which are really evil.”

This was a technical mailing list, and the consensus seems to be that if your local Freecycle group uses Yahoo! Groups, you should create a new mail alias especially for that group, and then delete it when you want to unsub.

down here in sunny Brighton in England I am spending more time explaining the Yahoo problem to disgruntled members, than actually modding the group….and yes I’ve sent out Admin posts about the problem and told ‘em to be patient :) But most of the folk getting group emails don’t want ‘em and won’t read ‘em and then there are the hundreds of new members who aren’t yet getting the group emails but would like to…so won’t get to read the Admin either.
I would laugh except it is beyond funny now.
Yes I have also (nicely) contacted Customer care…..
    Yadda Yadda

Please post AN UP TO DATE UPDATE…I cannot keep sending out the one from 24th July….I am now having to deal with members complaining about the Yahoo out of date update!!!!

Ok.. so according to the update on the 24th, things should be fixed by today (31st), but I’m not holding my breath. Until then, these groups are basically dead, because approving new members is worthless. I am not the smartest tool in the shed, but am I the only one who questions the idea that this “fix” should take 7 days or more to work thru a system? A “new and improved system”.. (since we had that changeover to the new servers, etc, just a few months ago and that disaster).

I would like to request an update from Yahoo. It is a week since the last update which more or less promised that the problem would be sorted out and the membership lists caught up in a week.

I moderate several lists (fortunately, at least under these circumstances, none are over 1000). All of them have people who joined over a week ago (according to the logs) and who have not yet shown up in the members list.

This would seem to indicate that catch-up is not taking place as predicted.

I think we would all appreciate having some idea of where we are in the process.

  97. Ron said,

    July 31, 2009 @ 2:36 pm

Just did a log/member list comparison … still no updated data. I’m getting a bit tired of trying to explain that there is nothing I can do for members who are unable to change preferences, unsubscribe, not getting email (reading mail on the web page for some is a real problem) Last update was a week ago and claimed should be “fixed” in a weeks time. What’s the latest projection on getting this bug solved? I know Yahoo is big, can be exceedingly slow in making changes but I think members are due some feedback from Yahoo.

  98. Bob said,

    July 31, 2009 @ 6:58 pm

On the 24th, we were told the problem was identified and that it would take a week for it to catch completely up. Now, on the 31st, we’re getting the same song and dance – they’ve NOW identified the problem and it will take a week or MORE for it to catch up. What information provided on the 31st is any significant difference to that which was given to us on the 24th? It’s like the song from ‘Best Little Who**house in Texas’ – Dance a Little Sidestep.

  101. Kate said,

    August 1, 2009 @ 3:51 am

At least you users of yahoo.com don’t have to put up with the rubbish that is yahoo.co.uk

If a yahoo group is hosted on yahoo.co.uk you cannot change preferences by email – you have to have a yahoo id and sign in to do it.

And this has been like this for years. Likewise with not being able to confirm an additional email address, you get a cutesypie Yahoo error code saying ‘oops you’re signed in with the wrong id, sign out of 123@yahoo.co.uk and sign in with 123@yahoo.co.uk

Yes, that’s right – they tell you to sign out of the id and sign back into the same one to ‘correct’ the error.

This also has been like this for months.

  102. Karen said,

    August 1, 2009 @ 5:42 am

Thank you for posting an update.

However, as someone else mentioned, the update is simply repeating the same information that appeared in the last update. The big question is why the process, which was supposed to take a week, is now supposed to take another week.

I think that most of us would appreciate knowing WHY the old time frame was not accurate, and why we should expect the new time frame to be accurate. *Understanding* is really key for me, and I suspect for many others. We usually don’t like simply being served up with something that now appears to us to be a “template” – this “template” approach produces a feeling very similar to the one I have when I report a problem to Customer Service and they send me back a stock reply that shows they have simply plugged in something convenient rather than actually reading what I said.

  103. Kate said,

    August 1, 2009 @ 5:45 am

I only click on Yahoo because of the groups. I don’t check out travel, news, personals, maps, etc, etc,…. it is GROUPS. If groups are dead, there is no reason for me to open Yahoo, and I bet I’m not alone. I admit that Yahoo seems to have the best set-up for groups, BUT they need to concentrate on making them work properly instead of adding features. I want a “chevy” group, not a “mercedes” group, so I can do without the bells-and-whistles, I just want the group to function!

  105. Karen said,

    August 1, 2009 @ 6:31 am

This probably won’t be useful for people with huge numbers of member setting changes to deal with, but I went in and compared the Member List with the Membership logs on my 4 big lists and determined who the last person was to have made a successful change. I then sent a bulk message to everyone who had made an “unsuccessful” change.

Here is the message I sent out:

    ——————————–
Since the switch to new software, all Yahoogroups over 350 members have been having problems with members who want to change their settings. This includes changing to/from the digest setting, joining the group, or leaving the group.

New members are not receiving email, but (fortunately) they can access the
website to read and post messages.

Other changes, such as leaving (and therefore no longer getting postings),
changing to digest mode or changing your list email address, are NOT taking
    place.

A week ago, they said they had figured out the problem and it would take a week for the membership lists to catch up. Unfortunately, this did not happen. They have now posted a new message that says the fix is in place (which, of course, was we thought that they had said before) and that it would now take a week (hmmm…sounds familiar) for the membership lists to catch up.

    Cross your fingers.

    @Karen,
The old timeframe was (and wasn’t) correct as the issue wasn’t fully resolved at last post. Essentially what was happening was that the servers were restarting their caching/loading of the data, so the queue wasn’t shrinking down appropriately. (Think of it like a record/cd skipping or returning back to the start of the song). This has since been remedied and now the queue is successfully draining and updating groups as it goes.

Is any of this replicated database issue causing posts to arrive with timestamps that are hours ahead of themselves? I’ve been receiving and viewing messages identified on the group website/archives as being posted hours later than it actually is. I first noticed it yesterday and wasted a lot of time trying to figure out what *I* was doing wrong but I’m pretty sure there’s no way for a mere moderator (or owner) to fast forward their group into another time dimension.

@bobbie … That happens to me all the time. All of mine are from spammers. Most are spammer tactic to get the message at the top of your inbox. I have a lot in my spam box dated 2038. The spammers spoof the headers to accomplish this thing. If you are seeing it from regular trusted users, alot of times it’s caused by the clock on the originator’s computer being off. Mail time is set by system time of the origination system. If I set my clock on my computer to 3 days in the future, the emails I send will be marked 3 days in the future. The sad truth is that email in general is a horrible system in many aspects but the spec isn’t going to get changed anytime soon.

Hmm – 2 of my groups are sort of catching up – new members up to 30 July now showing.

The other is still languishing with no new members since 24 July – despite there being umpteen.

Melissa, I just wanted to report that both of my groups seem to be fully updated with the new members now. They are also functioning properly in updating current new members. There still does seem to be issues when members leave groups via the net (as I’ve personally done with a group to which I belonged two days ago). I’m still receiving postings from the group even though it shows that I no longer belong to the group and won’t let me unsubscribe or change my email setting via email. I also note that there still seem to be problems with the bouncing queues.

Thank you for your diligence. I know we’ve all been complaining and moaning, but I truly do appreciate everything you do.

Hi, Melissa. My comment about the bouncing queues was based on the way it was yesterday. Today, the queues are functioning properly. Please disregard that comment.

    All the best,

Any progress being made on the “adult bug”?

Still not working, Melissa, you might be convincing karen, who seems very easily pleased, but you’re not convincing the rest of us.

    3 – 4 day estimate on August 1st.

    It’s August 4th tomorrow.

I hope you realise how much advertising revenue you’ll lose when Groups gets abandoned due to Yahoo imcompetence.

    @Lester,
Moved you. Nothing to note on the adult bug issue, though it seems you moved again/after I moved all the groups this morning :|

Feel free to email me directly if this happens again yahoogroups [at] yahoo-inc [dot] com

    @Kate,
The post says that some groups may be caught up in 3-4 days while others may take at least a week.

    -Melissa

PS, as a side note, I tried emailing you directly to follow up on one of your comments but the email address you use here doesn’t seem to be a legitimate one and bounced back. Perhaps next time you could use a real address so I could contact you directly? Thanks.

Thanks, Melissa! I was hoping that was it (the timestamp being related to the db issue). btw: Membership roster on one of my groups has been updated to include new members approved on July 30th so it’s definitely moving forward.

think when yahoo or any supporting web hoster has a prob it would be alot easier if they flood the groups owners with a message, telling them of the problems,I only found out because I asked someone to join one of my groups as I wanted a co-owner,then when I tried to make them a owner im seeing no such match/no such member, yet I looked in management tasks and saw I did in fact approve them,I do know the last logged member approved on all my boards is July 17,so it seems yahoo knew of this problem since the 17th which was Friday of lasst week and here we are at wednesday the 22!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Melissa – I have a Group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/International_Amaranth_Group

where I have added some New Members. With the exception of one that was added on July 17 none of the rest have shown up. I also have Bouncing members there that are not showing up. Is there anything that can be done? I have some others that want to be added but I won’t add them until this is fixed.

    Thank You.

Hooray! As of about a half hour ago all my affected groups have updated!
Found out when a member in limbo sent me a post titled “I GOT EMAIL”

Been a bit of a rocky road but at least things are back to “normal”, or at least as normal as Yahoo can be. Please, don’t add any “new and wonderful” features until such time as all the other bugs in the system are worked out such as pending messages rejected by email hanging around in the pending file for days and days after.

when is the message search going to be functional again .. my group hasnt been working since march ..have filled out the form several times and still isnt working . it is extremely frustating !!
it is a real pain in the neck to have to maually search thru the arcives page by page until you hopefully find the message needed .
looks like the rest of the group is FINALLY functioning better than it was . thanks ! now if we can just get the search messages working it would help!

    Hi Deddy,
gmail.com has a feature that no one is asked about. If you send through your gmail account to a yahoogroup, you will NOT receive the email back when it is sent out from yahoogroups. The only way they will see their post is if they do so through the website of your group and not by email submission.

Now that YG has returned (hopefully) to somewhere near its normal functionality (whatever “normal” might be when it comes to Groups!) would it at all possible to KEEP THINGS RUNNING SMOOTHLY for more than a few weeks at a time ??

Idea: How about NOT adding any new wiz bang not needed YG crashing features? Idea: How about concentrating on the much more important tasks of maintaining some reasonable level of consistency, stability, reliability, and quality of service in an effort to restore YG’s credibility and user experience ?? Idea: How about moderating this blog more closely to eliminate the off-topic nonsense posts made by those who apparently don’t have anything better to do with their time ??.

Thanks for any consideration the YG team might give to the above ideas.

I totally agree with NBR. Please concentrate on the service instead of adding “new” features. Also, am I the only one having trouble uploading photos? Seems like if I upload 3, I get 1 and 2 are blank, and sometimes I have to try 3 or 4 times (and yes, I have tried both types of upload methods).

Still cannot search messages posted since March on any of the groups I own(and I have signed each group, I own,up more than several times) and I cannot search after March for any of the groups I belong to. Members and other Mods cannot search after March in the groups either. Some members say they post but we are showing no signs of the post anywhere (more than a few complaints about this), Memebers are not showing up in the members link-but showing up in the management section, Members are not getting messages (many members have complained about this).

I reported the issue to Customer Care of new members since 8/31 not be added. They responded that the issue was being elevated due to it’s severity, but I have not heard back from anyone. It looks like some, but not all, of the new members are now showing up in our member list. Could you please update this blog entry to provide us with an update on this issue and why it has re-occurred.
