Planned Outage: July 14, 15, and 16

UPDATE (7/16: 4:55 pm PDT; 11:55 pm GMT): The outage is complete.  If you are still having problems accessing your group (or other issues), please contact Customer Care. All comments to the blog are read by the team, but only Customer Care can actually provide support.

UPDATE: The outage scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, will not take place. Instead, on Thursday, July 16th, there will be a site-wide outage impacting all Yahoo! Groups.

During this time, you will not be able to access any of your groups, and, mail will be delayed. Once the site is back up, mail delivery will resume. This outage will start at about 3pm PT (10pm UTC/GMT-to determine what time the outage will take place in your neighborhood, please visit this link: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html) and should last roughly 2 hours.

This week (July 14, 15, and 16), we’ll be performing maintenance on the remaining 75% of Yahoo! Groups that were not affected by last Wednesday’s outage.

This maintenance will take place over a three-day TWO DAY period (July 14, 15, and 16), as we’ll be working on 25% of Yahoo! Groups at a time. This means you may be able to access some of your groups, but not all, during the outages. For the affected groups, mail will be delayed, but will return to normal once the outage is complete.

All of the outages will take place at 3pm PT (10pm UTC/GMT-to determine what time the outage will take place in your neighborhood, please visit this link: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html) on the 14th, 15th, and 16th.

While we know that outages sometimes seem to come at exactly the wrong time, we again hope to have these next three done within 2 hours.

Once the maintenance has been completed, we’ll update this post.

Thanks for your patience!

    Hi! I’m trying to get the term one files and it isn’t working. I’ve gotten Aesop and AIS this way but the others are showing an error when I try to pull them up. Do you know how I can make it work? Is anyone else having trouble?

    Thanks,

    Hey guys, thanks for letting us know. I’m just hoping this maintenance update has something to do with updating the Photos section to allow subfolders? Its been promised several times on the suggestion board, but never happens. But it seems like you guys are fixing bugs, will there be no new added features? Thanks!

  4. Administrator said,

    July 12, 2009 @ 4:55 pm

    This maintenance, like the one last week, is designed to strengthen our core database infrastructure (to make it more reliable and faster) rather than to add any new features (as an fyi, new features should almost never require downtime; only work on the core infrastructure like the databases or a data center move requires downtime).

    And while we definitely do plan to keep adding new features, bug fixing and strengthening the core infrastructure generally take precedence.

    Meanwhile, if folks like Cel are experiencing problems, they are bugs unrelated to the maintenance, and they should contact Customer Care:

    Hi!!
    I was wondering when are you going to increase the number of invites we can send to people. I don’t think 50 is enough, and I’m starting a Christian Group and trying to find members, so when are you going to increase the number of invites so groups can invite more people and will it be part of your maintenance??

    Cindy, your membership may be pending because you did not provide enough information during your request to join. Email the owner of the group and advise your general location and why you want to Freecycle. Many groups require this information to approve membership.

    I find this board very helpful and Yahoo does it’s best to keep our groups up and going.

    Just remember, they don’t charge us for a service, it is FREE, and if you don’t like it, move on and find another server. Other wise, GROW UP, and use this message board for what it was meant.

    Sorry just had to vent!

    Please Check This Yahoo Team This Will Resolve Many Issues Where We Discuss in Our Group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MumbaiHangOut/ we are in Very Large Data Base in Members. Emailing to Every One Would be Difficult. Plus I again Observed that Yahoo Groups are Changing the Delivery Setting of the Members In time to time manner which should be again avoided. New Members Joing to the group get joined by the setting “DIGGEST” . I hope Yahoo Team Will Look into this matter and This maintance will Reslove Some Issue Which is Mentioned Here.

    for tina!!!
    Leaving a group or all your groups is easy just go to “groups” on “my Yahoo” page. (That of course gets YOUR Groups not mine) at the bottom of the short listing click “View All”. that gets all your groups listed about 10 per page. At the top of a page of groups click “Edit” That should provide you blocks for each group , one of which will be “Delete”. Check each delete box for each group( I don’t think there is a single box for all groups. Then clic “Save Changes”. That will delete you from each group you have checked the delete box for. Repeat for each page of your Group Inventory and eventually you will be deleted from all your groups.
    For unwanted Emails just mark each one as “Spam”. Then get in the habit of emptying your Spam WITHOUT opening it at all. The empty is in Parentheses in the listing of your Email directory on the left hand part of your email page.
    Good luck

    I’m with Secret – the Search feature in Messages doesn’t seem to find messages which are new within the last few months. It does find older messages meeting the search criteria, presumably all of them, but I can’t be sure. I think I first noticed this problem months back as well, though I could be mistaken about that.

    Hi I started a church singles group and initially set the messages that ALL “new members” messages had to be moderated by me. I’m not sure how long of a time justifies a member NO-LONGER being new but I still have to moderate messages for about everyone…

    The catch is, I’VE CHANGED MY SETTINGS TO HAVE ALL MESSAGES “UNMODERATED” SEVERAL MONTHS AGO BUT I’M STILL HAVING TO APPROVE MESSAGES BEFORE THEY FINALLY GET POSTED TO THE ENTIRE GROUP. I don’t check my email regularly enough to avoid the delay this causes & believe this is a technical glitch or “bug” like you speak of that needes fixing.

    Can this please be addressed?

    @Steve,
    An “outage” is when you’ll be unable to access your group– it’s just like a power outage at your home– things temporarily do not work. During this time, we have to/will be taking some of the groups offline to perform maintenance.

    @Ty

    Changing the group to “unmoderated” from “new member moderated” will make members who joined after you made this change able to post without moderation, but the members who joined before that will need to be manually changed to “use group defaults” since they’re currently individually set to “moderated” (and individual settings always override the default).

    It’s admittedly tricky, but there are good reasons why the feature works the way it does. If you raise this issue on one of the “groups about Groups”, you can detailed explanations for why:

    When are you going to fix the “SEARCH” function for groups? It used to work flawlessly, now it doesn’t work at all most of the time. The Yahoo Groups SEARCH capabilities are what made Yahoo a better alternative, but now, I’d advise people to switch to GOOGLE groups, if now we are not able to search through the old messages.

    1. Please delete the spam comments from this post

    2. Can you explain why the outage of 1/3 of the groups at a time, which has been going fine is suddenly changed to an entire site outage? What broke?

  81. Melissa Daniels said,

    @Leslie,
    In the process of deleting– every night we get really hard with spam (upwards of 150+ spam comments). My apologies for having to tread through them for the moment.

    As for the change in the outage, nothing broke. The team opted to do a broader maintenance plan, which resulted in the cancellation of Wednesday’s outage, and prompted the broader outage on Thursday (today).

    @Rex,
    If your group is a “closed” group it will be private adn only accessible by the people within your group/who you invite. If you don’t want them to access the archives, you can change this setting as well so that only the owner or moderator can view archives.

    Additionally, be sure to not accept any “Grouply” invites as these will make your content much more public.

    I want to know if the maintaince is over with or not. I tried to do the world wide clock and did not know how to do it.

    I also want to know why yahoo does not care about how a owner of a yahoo group runs their group and treats their members when a member pays for yahoo and the owner of the group does not. I emailed the right people to complain and they did not care. it is not right. I pay for yahoo and she does not and she should not be a yahoo group owner.

    Can someone PLEASE post an intelligent update on the outage situation. This whole thing has been handled so poorly, IMO. Please stop giving us dates, then changing the dates, then the dates come and go with no resolution to the problem.

    Why should Yahoo moderate this blog when they can barely oversee their day to day operations. Last time they did a weekend email maintenance I couldn’t use my mail for six weeks. And did anyone take a look at the OF Breyer group and see all the filth posted there? I haven’t gone back in quite awhile so maybe it’s cleaned up, but I doubt it.

    Thanks very much for the warnings and updates.
    Question… Are you aware of current message-posting delays?
    My largest group is running between 13+55 minutes…
    People are beginning to complain by private email, as they
    are unable to post an inquiry. Is something going on?
    Temporary I hope? Thank you for your kind assistance.

    our group is experiencing the same issue and I reported it to customer care about 5 hours ago. They still haven’t assigned me a ticket number (which usually takes about 10 minutes) so I’m guessing it’s wide spread. I came here looking for some sort of notice but obviously there isn’t one.

    MELISSA–

    I wrote Customer Care on July 16 about not being able to search by author in my group (the other search options work, and the group has apparently been migrated, since it’s now referencing current messages).

    On July 17, Customer Care emailed me to say they were forwarding my comments to the “production team,” but I haven’t heard anything since.

    I’d like to know whether search-by-author is going to be restored, or whether it’s been permanently disabled. Is this on the production team’s list of things to be fixed, or not?

Several members as well as myself (owner) has had this happen just since things started ‘improving’.
