Planned Outage: Wednesday, July 8th
UPDATE (7/8 3:50 pm PDT, 10:50 GMT): Maintenance is complete. All groups should again be accessible. Thank you to the affected groups for your patience!
Today, Wednesday, July 8th we will be performing scheduled maintenance on the Yahoo! Groups databases. During this time, some of you may not be able to access your groups, and group mail will be delayed.
Maintenance should take roughly two hours, and will begin at 1pm PT (8pm UTC/GMT- to determine what time the outage will take place in your neighborhood, please visit this link: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html).
Once the maintenance has been completed, we will update this post.
Thanks for your patience!

I have had so much trouble with your whole site that this evening, I am going to suggest that our group go elsewhere on the web. Yahoo! is really cumbersome and that’s why I’ve never had a yahoo email addresd before. I tried it once, my ID was stolen, and it was used to defraud someone on Ebay. I hate yahoo. I’m songscat@gmail.com, and very happy, thank you very much.

You definitely have my vote for changing away from yahoo. This site is the only reason I have a Yahoo address. I became aware of Freecycle a few months ago when we donated a garage full of barely used children’s items in IL. just before we moved. Well good luck with the changes/updates. Your work is appreciated.

I`m a beginner of your group in Yahoo.
But I got a big problem.
When I Punch my group`s name on search part,I couldn`t find my group.
That makes many people not to be accessible to my group.
So. Please check it out and make it worked out.

I am the founder of eight current groups on Yahoo!, the oldest of which was converted from eGroups 10 years ago.
There have been many problems over the years.
The most pernicious problem belying many complaints in that Yahoo! mail marks messages from your own groups as spam.
Even flagging it as not spam does not prevent it from being marked as spam again later.
I think many other mail systems also mark Yahoo! group mail as spam because it has “Precedence: Bulk” and is so widely distributed that it appears to be spam.
Probably many subscribers have taken to marking there group mail as spam rather than unsubscribing.
Surely many careless groups are a distribution tool for spam.
I moderate all my groups and have never permitted a spam message or chain letter to be distributed.
Most groups are unmoderated and have probably been a conduit for billions of spam messages.

I’ve moderated groups on Yahoo for 5000 members since 2004 and there haven’t been any huge problems. The problems seem more recently related to the “upgrades”. The search function isn’t working correctly and things seem very slow to respond in general. It just takes time to get used to a new interface so the new people – just give it some time to get used to it. I haven’t found other sites to be significantly better.

I have a problem.
This email address is registered with Yahoo Groups and is the one to which you send the messages to one of the groups I belong to. However if I send a message to the group from this address, it never arrives and I don’t get an error message.
I have tried changing to another registered email address but I still cannot get messages to come through. I have to do it from the Yahoo Groups web page for my group (LX200).
What is wrong, please.

One bit of fine tuning I hope you will be able to achieve during the “Outage” concerns the Rich Text Editor on messages. Can we hope that perhaps words set in italic when composing messages will appear in this form and not emerge in bold? Apparently – from enquiries I have made about this before – you are aware of this problem which has persisted for some time.
As a Group Owner, I have to say I have encountered no real problems, and congratulate you on the work you do.

I’ve been on yahoo groups since they converted from egroups. I’ve found most of the unmoderated groups are spam magnents. I’ve left the unmoderated groups because of the high level of spam I was getting from them. I own several groups on yahoo groups and I moderate all new members for a few months to make sure they aren’t spammers. I ban & remove all spammers from my groups. The only problem I’ve had is getting back posts where older posts sometimes show up that have been posted before with the same date and multiple posts of the same messages.

Guess Yahoo intends to do nothing about Yahoo Group
Spam or about appointing responsible moderators
to take over abandoned groups.
Makes me wonder, what connections there are between
the Spammers and Yahoo Inc, that they are allowed
to continue their practices at Yahoo ?
Similarly , there has been an increase in Grouply spam.
Why is Grouply allowed to operate using Yahoo Groups
to make money for the Grouply Owner ?
Thereis no benefit to Yahoo Groups to have Grouply
sending their spam constantly .

@John C,
Sorry to hear you’re so frustrated– however, just wanted to point out one thing: we regularly perform system maintenance (just like today’s) for a variety of reasons. None of these outages have ever claimed to fix the search issue, as that is not the purpose of an outage. Instead, an outage is done for other reasons (not for product fixes/pushes)– we push out fixes/products without any downtime, and do these on a bi-weekly or weekly basis.

What’s bad news for me at least is that I have a bunch of whiny babies that every time something hiccups, I am personally to blame. All the promises that are made by Yahoo means nothing–I can fix it can’t I, is what I keep hearing.

I have noticed that I also have not been receiving any pending message notices since this afternoon. And I checked with another moderator who has found the same thing happening with her groups. I am making an effort to check the group regularly, but wonder if you have any idea what caused this or when it will be working again? Thanks.

I am the moderator of the NOIRAQWAR group.
I am also not receiving any pending messages notices since this afternoon. I can check the group and moderate at the site but it is much more convenient to get the notices. Like Cathy I wonder when this will be working again?

I run several Yahoo groups and since the outage I’ve lost 3 with no explanation. How do I find out why my groups have gone?

Hi Melissa,
The link you sent me to do something about Grouply
spam goes to a Grouply website and I never visit
spammers websites.
Grouply was never invited into my group, they
gatecrashed it.
If Grouply has any business ethics , they would immediately
remove all Yahoo Groups added to their database that
did not request being part of their operation .
As you now inform me that
“Grouply is in no way a partner of Yahoo or Yahoo Groups”
Yahoo Inc should request that this be done on behalf
of all Yahoo Group Owners.

Another maintenance, another new problem. I struggled for a solid year with Y’hoo repeatedly resetting my moderator email address to a long dead one. That’s a problem, since I use the email interface for moderation on a very active list. Nobody could suggest a fix and there was evidently no interest at Yahoo in finding the bug. Finally, per suggestion, I created a new Y ID and changed over to moderating from that one. That has worked — no more resets to a dead address — for more than a year.
And now I’ve got the problem again. With 60+ messages a day, I haven’t had a moderation message since afternoon of 7/8. Why? Because my moderation address — the same one I’ve been using for several years — is ‘not available,’ and Y’hoo is resetting it to the same long dead one — an address I have NEVER used with this Yahoo ID. I was able to fix it that evening, but I never got any moderate messages and I see that it’s ‘not available’ again this AM.
Actually, that’s not quite true. I have gotten one membership approval at the correct address. And once I approve messages at the web site, I get them at correct address — it really IS a working address. But the moderate messages are simply disappearing into cyberspace.
The claimed reason for ‘not available’ is ‘in use by another ID’ — perhaps the one I had to abandon for this list? But I own and moderate a dozen or more lists, and most of them, I’ll bet, via that old ID. I’m not going to be allowed to simply delete it.
Yahoo Groups is conceptually a wonderful service and most of the time, most of it works very well. But these repeated breakings of long-working features — generally treated as “Huh? Can’t be OUR problem …” — are a royal pain.

Melissa,
I have two groups, and don’t have a lot of issues, but our main one is:
We area freecycle type group, and we require that an offer be given prior to posting a want. We used the search feature all the time to check this. Now we can’t so our site has become a free-for-all. The search feature needs to be returned so we can go back to this group requirement.
Also, we LOVE the new applications, and are using it daily!
Thanks for all your hard work!

Maintenance is NOT complete – it is now 900am EDT on Thursday July 8 and the group I moderate is down – how do I know? I wrote a post two hours ago and nothing has shown up on the list since 230am EDT and we have people in all time zones including overseas. Also I tried to contact customer care yesterday re a Y Mail issue and was unable to do so. I was sent to an endless loop of links with no way to write and explain the problem.

GMT’s name was changed to UTC because it seemed arrogant to expect the whole planet to define local time by reference to the local time in an obscure part of an island near one of the smallest continents. (France tried for years to have Paris time adopted at least as a second standard). Now it’s WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY worse, now we expect the whole universe to do the same thing!

Melissa:
Over this past week, I suddently stopped getting messages from my group. I have my comcast address listed as my primary email. I went into my profile and moderator sector and just hit updated or save changes. When I did this, I am still experiencing problems with getting emails including the ones that I send out. Can you please see that this problem is fixed right away, I feel that I ‘ve done everything that I can from this end. Before this week, I was receiving messages and then all of a sudden it stopped, thanks
