Planned Outage: Thursday June 11, 2009
UPDATE: The maintenance was complete at 4:15 pm PDT (12:15 am GMT). If you are still experiencing problems they are unrelated to this maintenance. Please contact Customer Care so that we can look into the problem:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/original/members/forms/forms_index.html
On June 11th, 2009 Yahoo! Groups will be undergoing maintenance. During this time 50% of groups will be unavailable for up to an hour. The outage is scheduled to begin some time between 2 and 3 pm PT (10-11 pm GMT).
While the maintenance is going on, all features of affected group, including messages, photos, attachments, etc. will be completely unavailable. However, once the outage concludes, any messages that were posted to these groups via email during this downtime will be distributed.
In an effort to better communicate to all of you, a “blast message” will be posted to all groups later today linking to this blog post. This message will be visible on all groups to all users.
Thank you for your patience—during the outage, this blog will remain up (and comments will remain open), and we will update you all as information becomes available.

Perhaps while this maintenance is taking place, something could be done with the time that it takes for the Ortho advertisements to load. I have cable high speed, and have to wait every time for those moving banners to load. I can’t imagine what it is like for those members who are forced to use a dial up or slower connection speed.
Otherwise, keep up the great work. All of the groups I am a member of is a great source of community sharing. This is definitely a public service much appreciated.
Anna said,

I’m glad to know it is NOT only my computer that is having a hard time with the “ORTHO” advertisement at the top of the page. It takes forever to load and the pages freeze during the process. At one time there was a place to complain about the advertisements but I can no longer find it. Please remove that Ortho add from the groups pages. Even with high speed internet access it blogs the system down.
Thanks for the heads up on the maintenance and I hope all goes well without any glitches.

Ever since the last maintenance I have been unable to enter via the internet most of the groups that I am a member of. I am still receiving email from them but when I click on the ‘visit your group’ link, or go directly to the home page of them I am told I need to be a member to access anything. WILL THIS BE CORRECTED (I hope so, I use YAHOO for alot of stuff, but am finding that FACEBOOK may become a better choice for me to communicate with others)

Is anyone having trouble uploading images? Especially images that go over 70 kb in size?
Whenever I try to upload images, even 1, the uploader fails to upload it. It seems to be uploading random images and there is no error message to explain why.
This is happening on all of my groups and I am very concerned. It is becoming very hard to upload large amounts of images.
Please fix this probelm.

Hopefully someone at Yahoo is reading these posts, and can address some of our issues. Though to be honest, some are not Yahoo related, and may be virus related to the users computer. On that note, if you’ve joined grouply in the past, you may want to change your passwords on Yahoo. Joe, sorry to hear that your group disappeared. Could it be that someone you gave moderator priveledges to accidentally deleted the group? That is the only scenario I can see happening.

I am probably going to bring the wrath of Yahoo down on me.
But why do you schedule maintenance in the middle of the day on a weekday?
I have worked for computer company’s including IBM. Maintenance was always done between midnight and 8:00 AM an a Sunday to cause the least disruption to the user community. Does Yahoo not want to put their people out by having them have to work on a weekend? Or is Yahoo too cheap to pay their system programmers a bit of shift premium or overtime for the weekend work?
Granted we do not have to pay for the service. But we do have to see the obnoxious adds that you put up. Those jiggly chicks dancing around trying to sell something, I do not look enough to see what they are trying to sell. The black dude showing his teeth and big lips is disgusting. I am not a dentist and don’t want to see someones mouth.
Hey, you do have a leg up on Netflix. They scheduled a system update on a Saturday night during prime-time. You could not watch movies online between 8:00 PM and midnight.
Just my thoughts.

But you’re going to spam all our groups about it?
–For those complaining about the ads: get AdBlock. Yahoo pages are impossible without it.

Better idea. Join Google Groups instead. They’ve got their act together.
Seriously. These bugs at Yahoo have been going on for months. They don’t seem to be anywhere close to fixing them. When they do answer questions, they just seem to be towing the company line. If they could back up their few words with action, it would be a miracle.
I was once loyal to Yahoo. Stayed with them for years. But these last few weeks have made me reconsider my loyalty. I’m quite happy with Google Groups.

My group has not been recieving messages AT ALL for the last three days. We are totally down. I believe your scheduled maintenance is for the 11th, which it TODAY, so what has three days ago got to do with three days ago? WE had six messages go through on the 8th, one on the 9th, and zero on the 10th, what is up with that? We are talking a very active group here where on a normal day we have up to sixty messages a day. What is going on. I am desperate here for someone from YAHOO to look into this situation. I have Foster Parents out there who are in need of support and help…..PLEASE SOMEONE NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS MATTER NOW>…………..not when it is convenient to do so. I appreciate your YAHOO GROUP services very much but we have 800 members who are lost and need help….PLEASE…SOMEONE find out what is going on…

the least you could do is include a list of local times so we don’t have to translate. for example, i think this translates to 5 – 6 pm EST, but you aren’t clear on whether this DST or not.
this might be a USA-centric attitude, but couldn’t this maintenance have been planned at a better hour than prime time? like between 2 and 6 am?

I wish instead there would be a notice saying “okay all maintenance is done” instead of “it should be done by such and such a time” when it isn’t done by that time.
Just my two cents worth.
I am getting errors such as “Invalid group” and also posts going missing that were there before the maintenance!

I’m hoping this “maintenance ” is the reason why I suddenly got stuck with the dreaded 999 error. I got the usual “access to temporary messages is temporarily unavailable” so I left the group pages, returned an hour later to the infamous Yahoo 999 error and have had it for the last 2 hrs
Please don’t tell me that I am going to have to constantly deal with this issue now just because I was stupid enough to have 1 laptop running WinDoh’s and not Linux . Yes I already rebooted my server and modem but no luck still locked out .
Angie said,

It is so nice of Mark to say what he said (not). I calculated by GMT time. I usually have to do it for everyone as I deal with sites in the UK as well as Australia and Canada and the USA. I am very aware of the time and the maintenance should be done by now. If you know something different Mark than prove it. There is no reason to be rude about it. Time was stated as “between 2 and 3 pm PT (10-11 pm GMT)” which PT is Pacific Time which is 3 hrs from my time. http://www.worldtimezone.com/faq.html
Never the less maintenance was slated for only an hour and now it has been just about 2 hours of problems and errors such as “Network transmission problem”

Bill Cortner said,
June 11, 2009 @ 5:53 pm
Lou,
I doubt that the groups are “permanently down or destroyed”
But contrary to Yahoo’s latest update on this blog-
ALL OF THIS IS DEFINITELY RELATED/CAUSED BY THE PLANNED OUTTAGE.
Two of my groups were running perfectly until the moment the outtage
began, and neither of them came back online after the maintenance ended.
Something obviously went wrong, and based on the number of groups reporting the same problems, all coinciding with the planned outtage…
It’s a very widespread problem… But as I said, I seriously doubt the
situation is permanent… Based on the seriousness of the issue and the
massive scope of the effect… I’m sure Yahoo’s engineers will be working
nonstop on this until our groups come back online… Have faith brother!

I’m getting nailed with private emails from my members, and
I’m sure other group’s members are also beginning to get worried-
Might I suggest another BLAST MESSAGE, something like…
“A large number of groups never came back online after the planned outtage… If this group is still down, rest-assured that our engineers
are aware of the problem and will restore group functions asap”
Since two out of three of my groups are effected, and adding to that
66% all of the reports on this blog… This problem is definitely serious and widespread enough to warrant a BLAST MESSAGE along the lines I suggested.
At least it will calm people down.

Michael, if you didn’t get the “Thank you” page then your form probably didn’t post. If you don’t receive the auto-acknowledge email in a few minutes, then you know it didn’t.
I don’t know if it has been fixed yet or not, but there was a time limit on form submission — exceed 15 or so minutes and your form submission would fail, giving you back a blank form or an error page.

Why does it seem like just when these groups begin to work ok, yahoo has to do something that puts a monkey-wrench in the system. New system, attachment storage, update sharing, downtime, etc. Maybe the new system was needed, but the attachment storage and the update sharing are dumb and have caused more problems than they are worth. Just give us simple groups that work and leave things alone! Stop trying to add bells-and-whistles that just mess with the service.

Yes you have emails back logged and then when you release them it places innocent peoples accounts on auto responder. You know that is a huge flaw within yahoo groups. This auto responder thing has happened to me twice now as a result of yahoo group maintenance. I do not use a auto responder nor have I ever used one. Anyone in groups knows to watch how much they send in a 20 minute time , we all try to stay off auto responder and end up there anyway due to yahoo and it’s flaws. Then there is no clear way to get yourself off auto responder , you go in circles trying to find the form to fill out. Does getting help have to be so hard?? Why isn’t there a direct link to get your account re-set and off auto responder status?? The help links for Yahoo run you in circles and are NOT much help. Seems as big as Yahoo is they could come up with a way for a person to get direct help for issues like auto responder, it’s easy enough to check out on your end if someone is sending spam or group emails.
Thank you for your time.

what’s the point, people ?
i mean this yahoo service is free “with advertising”, right?
the advertising means that everytime we “click”, Yahoo! makes money and that money pays their people to think up “imrovements” and so on.
the correct answer here is to LEAVE yahoo groups for better group services.. like Google Groups or whatever…i’ve not yet tried other group services yet, but since this most recent so-called “outage” i do think that it is time that we all do…sorry, Yahoo!, but you are not handling this very well at all

Couldn’t Yahoo update the group search indexes so that the old search would work again? Over three months of completely un-findable messages is beyond ridiculous. Where is Yahoo’s pride?

I have lost all my yahoo groups since yesterday!!!!!
Now my yahoo mail shows its been disabled??
HOW do I fix this!
This is very frustrating. When I try to re join the groups again, I can’t use my email ..this doesn’t make sense to me!

Still have disabled on my yahoo email..
I have sent several notices to yahoo but nothing yet..
This is beyond frustrating.
It started yesterday when my email was put on auto response! I DID NOT do it..It’s been downhill since.
All my groups are still gone. 17 groups! I still can’t re join because my email is disabled!!
Wouldn’t it be soooo nice to have an actual person to speak to!!

Tamie said,

I just did a search and most of my groups aren’t even coming up at all! This was definably caused by the maintenance. Groups don’t just disappear. I am the only one with permission to delete them and I didn’t do it!
Amy said,
June 12, 2009 @ 1:30 pm
Agree with Tamie that this has something to do with the scheduled maintenance. I am the moderator for the majority of Tamie’s groups, and while she has access to none of them, I only have access to 25 of the 50 groups that she owned. What is going on and how much longer do we have to wait. I have a lot of frustrated members who have no idea what is going on.
Tamie said,
June 12, 2009 @ 6:59 pm
“Unrelated to this maintenance?” So, it’s just a coincidence that my groups were all wiped out at the very moment this maintenance began?

@ Me
I don’t think you’ll be disappointed by Google Groups. They do have issues at times (what website doesn’t) but they’re starting to make Yahoo look like amateurs.
As I’ve said before, these bugs have been going on for months, and it looks like they’ve just made things much worse instead of better. It’s getting laughable.
Tamie said,
June 13, 2009 @ 8:38 am
I had started a couple of groups over on Google a while back and then decided to say on Yahoo because I had so many that needed to be moved over. But now that they have wiped my groups off the face of the Internet, I guess I have nothing holding me back! I have to start from scratch anyway.
Bill Cortner said,

Tamie,
I realize how frustrating this must be for you. But I’d try and hang in there for a little while longer. In my homest opinion, there’s a 99% chance that your groups will be restored. I seriously doubt that they were permanently wiped-out during the recent maintenance outtage. I’ve been with Yahoo Groups for many years [have several groups with thousands of members] and although things have been very rough since the March facility switch… Yahoo’s performance/track-record overall has actually been very good. Prior to March, it was rare that I had a problem and even then, it was always quickly corrected. My guess is that Yahoo felt that their move to a new physical location [servers] was absolutely necessary, or they never would have made such a costly, labor intensive and ultimately disruptive move. A further guess would be that the older facility/hardware would not allow Yahoo to move forward with the kinds of changes that the future always demands/ushers in with any tech industry. Clearly, the disruption was well beyond anything Yahoo’s engineers had envisioned. But it’s obvious that they have been working very hard to resolve the admittedly bad and frequent glitches
associated with this move/change. I realize that it’s human nature to believe that the grass is always greener on the other side of the LCD screen, but you know what? After going through hell to try and migrate your members over to a different group hosting service [and huge numbers would be lost], Yahoo would probably be just about done with this project. Plus who’s to say that whatever service provider you chose wouldn’t themselves feel the need to make changes to their system a few months after the migration resulting in similar kinds of problems on top of the loss of large numbers of members?
No… I’ve made up my mind to ride this storm out right here at Yahoo Groups,
because I believe their engineers will soon get things back to normal and that we will all begin to experience the benefits of whatever this move was intended to deliver as we move forward into the future.

What is most annoying is the fact that we cannot get a straight answer. I am repeatedly asked to provide more information including the URL (which how can I do for a site that doesn’t exist) while others are told that Yahoo has the right to remove/terminate any group that they think violates their TOS. How is an online recycling group that has been in existence for 6 years be in violation?

NRB, I did provide them with the URL but they said it was “not found, invalid or disabled” and are asking for a current one, which again, how can I send them one if they disabled the old one and haven’t created nor will allow me to create a new one.
I do believe that there are some people here who have no purpose other than to create havoc and be rude. Why take the time to respond to someone’s post if you have nothing beneficial to say?

Hello,
I applied to join this group quite a few days ago and I was wondering how long it normally takes to be approved. I’m in the middle of moving and I have a few things I’d like to post as well as looking for a few things for my new place. I’d like to email the Yahoo Group’s moderator but that was not an option that I could find.

As an FYI in the future, if you want to email the group owner you can always find the owner address at the bottom of the group homepage. This will message the moderator/owner directly.

Here we go again: All of a sudden, approved messages are being posted on our group’s board, but NOT being received by our members via email. Let’s see — this time it was less than a week between the latest breakdown in the messaging system and the last one. I believe that sets a new world’s record. Yahoo Groups have become IMPOSSIBLY ridden with bugs.

Since the maintaince has been done on my site I am finding that I am unable to post a reply directly to any message on my group. I keep getting this stupid error when I hit the reply or send
Cannot retrieve message 76117 for MiniatureCollectorsClub
I am not sure what has been changed but this is annoying, I get a number of posts and prefer to read/reply from the site but this new problem isn’t allowing me to do so.
Could you please contact me and let me know what the problem is or if it will be corrected?

B-Dawg… yes, I have not been able to add any photos to the photo albums all day long (and in more than 1 group). I have tried to pull up the basic uploader, but it won’t even pull up. Another Yahoo “improvement” maybe?
Bill Cortner said,

My groups are also experiencing these issues…
#1 “can’t retreive message# XYZ” error message when trying to post…
People’s posts are then lost
#2 “remote server error” when trying to upload/change the homepage photo
This is troublesome as I normally change the image every 3-4 hours.
Since this is effecting four out of four of my groups, and judging by the
recent posts on this blog, I’m assuming these are widespread problems.
Fingers crossed for a quick fix.

I haven’t been able to post pictures since yesterday either, and my group was classified as adult all by itself. The last time this adult category bug happened, Yahoo did nothing to help and I had to shut down a group I’d had since 2004 and start all over. Maybe this time I can get some actual help.
B-Dawg said,

We haven’t had the adult thing happen…and hope it doesn’t…our group is family-oriented and don’t want to even start down that road. Hopefully they will get this stuff sorted out…I get confused even talking about it; I’d be useless trying to diagnose and fix it…
