Delayed Posts Update

Yesterday around 7pm, message posts to groups were not being delivered and went into a holding state.  The problem has been resolved and the posts since then are continuing to be sent out.  There will be a delay as the system works through the backlog of messages.  The delay will last a few hours but all messages should be posted by the end of the day and all new posts should resume back to normal.

Thanks for your patience,

I’m receiving a 9997 error code when attempting to access the above site using Google Chrome this afternoon. Other browsers are not encountering this problem and I’ve had no problem of this type with this browser before.
    Thanks!

It’s good of Yahoo to finally acknowledge a problem that many of us have had to endure all day long. But the fact of the matter is that the problem has NOT been fully resolved.

As the Moderator of the GoldsAndDings group, I witnessed for myself that messages that I was approving this afternoon weren’t reaching our members via either the group board or email, so I stopped trying to put any more through. Then this evening, when I noticed that the first two messages that I had earlier approved had finally been delivered, I moved to okay all of the remaining messages in the queue. After some delay, all finally made it through.

HOWEVER, I then tried to post a new message myself, and the same problem reared its ugly head once again: After posting and approving my message over an hour ago, it still has yet to appear on the board or in members’ mailboxes.

These kind of disruptions have become increasingly frequent with Yahoo over the last several months, and when they occur, they wreak havoc on the continuity of communications among group members.

So, please be clear on this: The problem that occurred earlier today with message delivery has NOT been fixed. It is REcurring again tonight.

So was the cause of this latest bug a spam attack yet again ?

  5. OldOnliner said,

    June 3, 2009 @ 8:07 pm

The problem is email – specifically spam – spam wins because email can’t scale. Email is the problem, not the solution.

Stop trying to make this pig-in-a-poke eGroups thing work. Yahoo Clubs had the right idea to start with – web boards is the way to go. Unfortunately, Y! gave up on that 8 years ago.

I always have trouble locating a post I create… Is there a easy way to find my posts? It would be helpful if my post was assigned an ID number when the post is created so I would have a search reference number. Please help with my search problems. Thanks.

UPDATE: As of 10 AM E.D.T. this Thursday, June 4, we are STILL experiencing long delays in group messages being delivered by email. So much for the delays lasting only “a few hours”, all messages being “posted by the end of the day” (that day, yesterday, having now come and gone), and the declaration that “all new posts should resume back to normal” (whatever that means…and whatever passes for “normal” at Yahoo).

Sorry to be so sarcastic, but after six months of these message delivery problems, it’s time to stop labeling them with terms like “temporary” and “transient” and start calling them what they really are — CHRONIC. And at the very least, it’s time for Yahoo to be truthful with its users about problems in the system AS SOON AS THEY’RE REPORTED — NOT several hours after they’ve become so overwhelmingly evident that Yahoo has no choice but to acknowledge the flood of complaints.

Michael, I’ve been a group owner [several groups with thousands of members] for many years, but as you said… Something has gone terribly wrong with Yahoo Groups both in technical/software terms and in customer service/response-time terms during the last few months.

Previous to about six months ago, I’d go months between glitches, and when something happened, Tech Support would solve the issue generally within 6-12 hours of my reporting it. But lately Yahoo Groups has been experiencing what can only be described as a BUG INFESTATION.

Would you believe that my family group has been bounced into the XXX ADULT category every single day for 28 days straight? Yet in spite of Yahoo’s promises in this blog to manually move the groups effected by the XXX BUG out of adult “every day”… It takes 2-3 days for Tech Support to respond.
You’d think after a solid month they could have had their engineers write some code to stop these daily category changes… Or at the very least, honor their promise to “manually fix the problem EVERY DAY”

But on top of XXX BUG… We, like the rest of you are getting stung by the
MESSAGE DELAY BUG and the PROGRAM INITIALIZATION BUG.

I’m so far beyond “bugged” at this point that I can’t even put into words the
level of anger, frustration and disappointment I am feeling toward Yahoo Groups who had, previous to six months ago, earned my respect and admiration.

Look, computer software is not a perfect science… Bugs and glitches come with the territory, even with the highest levels of beta testing and QC… For this reason I hesitated from joining the growing chorus of disgruntled group owner/moderators on what can only be described these days as this BUG BLOG, because I wanted to give Yahoo’s Tech Support folks and software engineers plenty of time to work through these problems.
Frankly, it was the least I could do after so many years of stellar service…
But this situation has become so serious, debilitating and old [months]
that I’m beginning to wonder if something catastrophic has happened
with Yahoo’s software and/or staffing/personel… What other possible
explanation could there be for this combination of SEVERE BUG INFESTATION and sudden change from fast/responsive Tech Support to HORRENDOUSLY SLOW AND INEFFECTIVE TECH SUPPORT?
I’m really not trying to be cruel, I’m just stunned by what’s going on with this,
until recently, excellent and responsive company.

it would have been nice to have a little more communication when the problem arrive and not only after it is resolved
this will avoid many group owners to worry about what is happening
you said in the past you will communicate more but we wait for this really

today i have one mor bug on my group page
    it say ” no activity”
yesterday this was correct and today not
when you repair one bug one other appear
is this one other bad sery OMG

The cherry on top of this digusting mess is that it takes one to two full minutes for any page on the Groups blog to load, including by hitting the Back button to the page you were previously on. And this is with cable. No other site I visit takes more than a few seconds at most to load, even with heavy graphics.

I suspect the delay has been instituted deliberately to discourage people from reading and commenting on the blog.

Our neighborhood listserv, which is utilized for Neighborhood Watch and other pertinent events & activities, is STILL not working in the searchable capacity. The ability to search has not been available since mid March. Would you please check out our group, NeighborNet today, then provide us with a date when it will be available or at least let me know what the next steps are to resolve this situation? Thanks in advance for a quick resolution.

My group was just bounced into the ADULT XXX PORNO category for the 29th consecutive day at exactly 7:01am pacific time… So clearly, in addition to the
MESSAGE DELAY BUG… and the MESSAGE SEARCH BUG… the XXX ADULT BUG also is unresolved as of day# 29… I have naturally contacted Customer Care, but having a family-friendly group bounced into a XXX PORNO category
for even a five minutes is potentially very problematic… Guess how long Yahoo left us in the XXX category last time… 27 hours… The time before that… 2-3 days! So trust me… As much as the SEARCH BUG stinks…
It could be worse… MUCH WORSE!

Here’s the solution to all of Yahoo’s bug problems.

You should all pack up and move your groups to Google Groups.

    No delays.

    No porn bug

Attachments work the way they should.

Seriously. Yahoo Groups are now a big joke. An unfunny one at that.

    Sorry for the frustration.

    Odd…

When I go to the blog’s main page –
    http://www.ygroupsblog.com/
it ‘hangs’ at about 2/3 progress.

    If I go to this entry’s #comments link –
    http://www.ygroupsblog.com/blog/2009/06/03/delayed-posts-update/#comments
    - it will ‘hang’ again at about 2/3 progress.

BUT when I go directly to this blog entry via the Permalink –
    http://www.ygroupsblog.com/blog/2009/06/03/delayed-posts-update -
it works fast, like normal, and doesn’t ‘hang’ or delay rendering at all!

(Using Firefox 3.x, with NO add-ons, ISP is 1.5mbps AT&T DSL connection.)

    I disagree with OldOnliner’s comment.

The email side of groups has been essential to my use of Groups. I avoid the web pages except for moderator duties.

I came to Groups looking for an easy way to manage a mail list; indeed most members of my restricted groups are still email-only members. For our ongoing discussions that’s all that’s needed — these members have lives beyond my groups, and neither need nor are willing to cope with the bother of setting up and using a web membership just to check in periodically.

But they do use email in their daily life and welcome the opportunity for recreation (not to say distraction) that the arrival of a group message provides.

Melissa, Thanks very much for offering to remove my group from the “Adult” category each morning… Thanks to you, today was the first day in exactly one month that I didn’t need to file a Tech Support request or more importantly, wait for an undetermined length of time for assistance.
Any idea how long it will take the engineers to solve this problem?
At this point, I’m sure you’ll be as glad as I to see the “Adult Bug” squashed.
Thanks again for your kind assistance.

    @Les Bugged,
No problem. Sorry you’ve had to deal with this for so long. Unfortunately, right now I don’t know the ETA– it’s a bit of a complicated bug so things are taking a bit longer than you’d anticipate. :(

Until things are resolved, I’ll continue to move your group.

Melissa, I don’t want to sound like a broken-record, but it’s human nature to only comment when things are going badly, and sit quietly satisfied when they are going according to plan. The broken record thing? THANK YOU FOR MOVING MY GROUP OUT OF THE ADULT CATEGORY THIS MORNING!
It has also not escaped my attention that Yahoo Groups in general has been running much more smoothly during the past 2-3 days… Posts are coming through very quickly, and home-pages are dowloading without incident.
I’m obviously not privee to what’s being done behind the curtain, but the visible result is that you guys are making progress with the recent software bugs/glitches… Frankly, if you could get the engineers to lick the “message search” and “adult” bug… This place would be as bug free as the “Raid” factory… Maybe you should run some kind of quiet contest behind the scenes… Offering the engineer/tech who finally nails these pesky bugs some kind of prize? At any rate, please be sure to communicate to them that people have begun to notice that progress is definitely being made.
Thanks again for your daily/early morning visits to my group…
Feel free to stick around, as we can always use another member.

I am a member of three Yahoo! email groups: ctngreg, ctnlatin and ctnmusic. The first of these is a prolific source of messages, but from late last week hardly any have reached me. (I receive mine through my normal email provider.) Checking my personal profile yesterday afternoon revealed that some recent ctngreg messages had started to bounce. The check involved ‘editing’ my profile (though no changes were made); and when I reviewed it again just now I could find no reference to the bounces. Can anyone tell me what is going on? I live in London (UK) and am an AOL subscriber. Two new messages got to me today, but I see from logging on to the ctngreg message board that at least half-a-dozen recent ones never reached me.

I am the moderator for a VERY ACTIVE yahoo group and we are in serious
trouble. Understand that this is the ONLY place for many of my foster parents to go for support when they have a problem. So we need to figure out what is going on and why we are not getting any message through to the group,
we have had only one message yesterday and six the day before. WE NEED someone from YAHOO to help with this problem NOW, not when it is convenient to do so. WE have people who are in desperate need of help.

“I LOATHE having to sign in EVERY time I visit my E-Group page. Is there anyway to avoid typing in both my email address and password??”

Maddie — It may depend on your browser. I typically use Mozilla Firefox. Whenever I plug in a new user name and password, it asks me if I want it to remember the name and password on this computer. If I say “yes”, then my name and password (showing as dots) are automatically plugged in, as long as I’m using my own computer.
