Groups Update: Missing Groups, AOL, Missing Members, Message Search

Thank you all for your patience during this week’s outage. We wanted to keep you updated on a few issues that may be impacting your experience on groups.

Missing Groups
After Monday’s maintenance a few of you have reported that some of your groups were “missing” from your groups list. If you are missing any of your groups please go through the Membership Wizard, found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/memwiz This will detect any groups registered to your ID’s. Once you’ve completed the Membership Wizard any "missing" groups should return to your groups list.

AOL Users
We’re receiving reports from some moderators and users that some AOL users are not receiving messages from Yahoo! Groups and are being put into bouncing status. For more information on this issue and information on how to “unbounce” yourself, please go here : http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/original/issues/aol.html

New Members Not Showing Up
If there are members who have recently joined your group but do not show up in your Membership List, please report this issue to Customer Care, as this is a bug. When reporting the issue to Customer Care please provide a list of the missing members. To report this issue, please go here : http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/original/members/forms/forms_index.html

Message Search

While we know that many of you are disappointed that this week’s maintenance did not include a fix to the message search issue, we are happy to report that we will be pushing out a fix to ALL groups in the next month that should resolve this problem. Currently groups that are affected by this bug are not returning search results altogether, or, may not be returning complete results. If your group meets these criteria, please register your group here : http://surveylink.yahoo.com/wix/p6290938.aspx and it will be one of the first groups migrated over to the new Message Search next month.

UPDATE: If your group is having search issues please use this link to report your issues to the team. Groups will be moved over again towards the middle of May . Reporting your group using this link will ensure that your group is one of the first to be moved over.

As always, please stay up to date on the latest issues by checking the blog, our Twitter stream, or the Known Issues page in the Help section. If you’re having an issue that isn’t addressed here or in the help section, please report the issue to Customer Care so we can investigate the issue further.

Thanks!

My posts are not coming up on my group. It has been several hours since the last post went through. This doesn’t seem to be happening on my other groups. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/comfycreations/

    Hi Melissa,

A “known issues” web page is a great asset and help.

But I see only two of the four problems you mentioned on the known issues web page.

I do not see “Missing Groups” or “New Members Not Showing Up” listed on the “known issues” web page.

Please try to make the page more comprehensive and up to date. Thanks.

    @Jay,
I already replied to your email that contained this same message, but I’ll reply again here– the New Member issue should be resolved today (it should be resolved now actually, but if you’re still seeing the issue, please report it) which is why it’s not on the page.

As for the Missing Groups issue, this is only a temporary issue affecting a small number of groups. We don’t place all issues on these pages, only issues that potentially affect all groups or all members.

thanks for the quick response Melissa.

it does seem like you folks are doing a better and better job of giving us better feedback on groups issues.

and that is a big help for group owners, and much appreciated.

“Preview” is still broken. I’ve seen this reported in Comments by others.

When I compose a reply, I like to Preview it before Sending; I like my comments to be decently written and correctly spelled. Unfortunately, ever since mid-March, the Preview function has made each paragraph into a one-line marathon going off the edge of the screen and extending many screens’ worth into the distance.

It’s no use when trying to edit/correct a message.

groups on which I have composed messages since mid-March (may not be a complete list):

    stashbuster
    QuiltvilleChat
    QOVFchat
    HeartStringsQuiltProject

Apparently my Group, Animation Addicts, was finally migrated to the new Search Updates.

However, the first time I logged into my Group I was logged in under an old, unused Yahoo ID. I double checked My Groups and they are all set to my new ID. My name in the Members section was correct, with my new ID. I logged out and back in to my Group. It then came up with my correct salutation using my new ID.

The Search Feature seems to be working now. However, it still brings up Messages I Deleted.

Does the “fix” not include that problem?

    Thanks, Diane

I haven’t been receiving the daily digests from many of the groups I belong to for the last several days. When I look at the group pages, I see there are new messages, but I’m not getting them. Is this possibly related to the “upgrades” that were done on 4/13?

This isn’t about groups, but I don’t know where to go or who to contact. I use the My Yahoo page constantly, my bookmarks on this page are my lifeline, I always have the My Yahoo page open to access these, it is so much easier for me than using my browsers bookmark feature. However last night all of my bookmarks were gone, just a link with a message there saying ‘we’re sorry your bookmarks are unavailable’ clicking the link brought me to an entirely different bookmark page.

Melissa, can you tell me where to find out what is going on or who to contact about this. I checked the My Yahoo blog, nothing there, I even posted a comment but noticed this morning it was deleted and no answer.

    Thanks for any help!

Melissa — New members who joined on or after 4/13 do not show up on the members list. We followed your directions as outlined above to contact Customer Care and provide the email addresses that do not show up correctly in our member list. We received a response back from Customer Care that said they couldn’t do anything unless they were contacted by the individual members who were having problems.

Since then, everyone who joined after 4/14 shows up in the members list, but we are still not seeing those who joined up on 4/13.

I don’t know what to do or how to report it because we’re caught in a loop with Customer Care. The blog says to report the bug to Customer Care, and Customer Care says the members need to contact them directly.

Groups Search is acting up on me tonight. It was working fine earlier. I can only view the first page, but the numbers and Next aren’t clickable. I’ve tried clearing my cookies, clearing the cache, and restarting the computer in case it was on my end. None of that fixed the problem. Is there a bug on this now too? (So far I haven’t experienced much of the other problems mentioned, I’m hoping my luck continues.)

Hi there, from the Brighton Freecycle group.
Briefly and without ranting too much (though I would like to) I have literally lost the will to live because of the ENDLESS problems, issues, maintenance, failings, glitches and NON-functionality of Yahoo Groups over the recent-ish past.
The consequences of the mayhem caused by Yahoo Groups NEVER EVER working properly consistently; has caused me literally hundreds of hours of wasted time.
I have modded the group for a long time with volunteered relish but because of the ‘issues’ with Yahoo groups it has pretty much swallowed up my life and my enthusiasm. My modding should take up 10-15 hours a week max. Currently I am spending over 30 hours a week doing the same tasks. I am a volunteer so this extra processing time just eats into my life, job, family and SLEEP time.I just needed to express to you the unbelievable frustration and angst your issues at Yahoo cause mods out here in the real world.
    Rant over.
    Thanks for listening.

In addition to the HOME-PAGE PHOTO UPLOAD GLITCH,
I’d like to report another problem… Horrendously SLOW PAGE-LOADS.
It’s not my computer because I’ve tried both of my systems…
One is hi-speed DSL, the other is hi-speed cable and all of the other
sites I visit load instantly… One thing I’ve noticed is that those buggy,
rectangular-shaped, animated things at the top of the pages are
causing more problems than usual, which is saying something!
Presently, these energy-stealing data-vampires seem to be
sucking-off what little server speed/capability is even available.
Any idea when Yahoo Groups servers will be running at proper speed?

I posted several things on my group’s board over an hour ago, and they haven’t showed up yet…and if other members posted (or tried to post) anything, they haven’t showed up, either… Things have been challenging for the past month, and I know you all are trying, and hate to complain, but will this be solved anytime soon so things can get back to normal? Before these “upgrades” our posts would show up more or less instantly. Now at best it takes a few minutes…

I’d like to add my voice to those who cannot upload an image to their groups’ home pages.   I cannot either.   I checked the known issues on the help pages  (it wasn’t there),  and I checked the other help pages  (not covered there either).   I also encountered a report of this issue on the front page of the
Yahoo Groups Yahoo Answers pages.   In two groups which I own, I’ve been getting the same error message when I try to upload a picture to the home page:

“error An unknown error occurred on the Yahoo! Groups server.”

If somebody could sort this out I’d be most grateful.   :)

  50. Bobbie said,

    April 22, 2009 @ 8:33 am

I posted two messages from the web four hours ago and they’re still not appearing. They’re neither in my mailbox OR in the message archives, so they can’t blame this one on AOL.

Since I’m a moderator of this particular group (AddisonDogs_), I can see by the management logs that they *were* actually posted at 7:39 am …but there’s still no “accepted” information in the Web Features or Posting logs. This is normally a very active canine health support group yet only six messages have made it through (between 4:00 am and 8:00 am).

My other groups are also unusually silent. Three that I receive individual mail from (delivered to Yahoo! Mail) have only seen seven posts (between 10 am and 10:30 am) and normally there would be 30-50 posts by this time and one more that I moderate (which is set to deliver to my AOL address) hasn’t shown any activity since late last night ~neither in my mailbox or in the group archives.

Pending memberships and messages have not shown up since yesterday, although the canine health groups usually have several each day …and those that *were* going through over the past several days could not be released via email but only from the web.

  51. Bobbie said,

    April 22, 2009 @ 8:34 am

Apparently emailing my message to my group DID work – post took about 10 minutes to come through for one lengthy message, but only 2 minutes for a short one.

    April 22, 2009 @ 8:48 am

  55. Patty said,

I think we’ll have to stick with emailing our posts in until this has all been fixed. Although I did get 2 web posts from 2 of my groups, none of the rest came in yet.

  56. B-Dawg said,

    April 22, 2009 @ 10:51 am

Okay, it seems like the posts are going through now…what about the ones from last night? After I sent them, it said “your message has been posted”, but they never showed up, and neither did posts from any of our other members. Did they just evaporate into oblivion?

  57. Bobbie said,

    April 22, 2009 @ 12:54 pm

The two posts I sent from the web at 7:39 a.m. finally showed up in the archives (and subsequently, my AOL mailbox) about an hour ago. My friend just told me that two of her EXTREMELY active groups have been “dead in the water” all day.

We are having problems with receiving our posts. This has been an on again off again problem for a couple weeks.

Plus our 160 aol members were all bounced. I have worked several days on this problem, including sending bouncing members individually instructions on how they can reactivate themselves. It is now down to 70 members, but our group is for elderly and they are less likely to be able to fix a problem that requires any action for them.

Many had a friend or relative get them online to join our group for seniors and receiving and reading our posts is all they can manage to do. Our mission is to combat isolation among the elderly, so this problem is really excruciating for us.

Is there anything else that can be done about this problem, where we can work around this lack of net savy among our senior members?

    Thanks!

I’m the co-moderator of the “audreyh” Yahoo Group (dedicated to Audrey Hepburn). For reasons unknown my group has been deleted, or perhaps misplaced. I have an e-mail in to Customer Care (though last time I had a query on an issue I never heard back from them so I’m not holding my breath.). Reading this news about missing groups and the like (not being a regular reader of this blog I wasn’t aware of this issue), is it possible this outage being discussed might have deleted some groups? Audreyh has been quiet for a few months, but I’ve got groups on my list that haven’t had a single post in 2 years and are still alive.

I keep getting Yahoo errors when trying to access my Group’s Calendar, it says “This service is unavailable at the moment. We apologize for the inconvenience”. If I keep clicking refresh, it finally works. My Group’s name is “classof1964″. It’s a real pain when trying to view and make updates to the Calendar. thanks
