Groups Update: Digest Delivery and Delayed Messages

We wanted to keep you updated on a few issues that may have been impacting your groups over the past few days.

Digest Delivery: Several users have recently reported issues with the delivery of daily digests. Digests were not being delivered unless a group hit “25 messages,” which affected some groups We have corrected this issue and all groups should be fixed by tomorrow (Thursday, April 9, 2009).

Delayed Messages and Bounces: Group members and moderators who receive their email through Verizon may not be receiving all messages, or may be receiving messages long after they’ve been posted to the group. Verizon has apparently been “grey-listing” mail from Yahoo! Groups. We have contacted Verizon to remedy the problem, but we are ultimately dependent upon them to resolve the issue.

If you feel as though your ISP may also be delaying the delivery of Yahoo! Groups mail, you can find the official list of outgoing mail servers here: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ygmailadmin/ This list will be useful when reporting the issue to your ISP as they will likely ask for the IP addresses of the mail servers that need to be “white-listed” to prevent future issues.

Once we have an update or confirmation from Verizon we’ll be sure to share it with you all here, on the blog.  In the meantime, thanks for your patience!

Thanks for the update . . . I’ve contacted Verizon. For other Verizon customers, you may want to fill out the form as well — perhaps the more of us they hear from, the more quickly they’ll get this resolved:

Sorry, I don’t know what a URI is.
    Comment:
Delayed and bouncing. By this if you mean missing or more than one copy, sometimes 3, this I can understand. How can it be fixed.
What are grey and white lists?

Regarding Saundra’s comment above, what is the form she talks about and where is it found.

Not having an issue with yahoogroups at the moment but I did fill out the form at http://www2.verizon.net/micro/whitelist/request_form.asp?id=member&

    to whitelist yahoogroups.com

Funny, another site I use (livejournal.com) had issues with mail delivery to verizon last week. Took about 3 days to get that fixed.

Thanks for the link Saundra & Leslie, I filled in the form as well.

Maybe your efforts are starting to pay off — tonight I’ve only noticed two missing messages and one late (45 hours late!). That’s a whole lot better than preceding couple weeks, when I had a dozen missing and a score late each day.

When trying to view a message directly on my yahoo group, I get the error message “The message you requested is temporarily unavailable because this group has exceeded its download limit. Please try again later.” This has been going on for a few hours. It’s odd because its not happening to all of my group members as they are responding to posts I’ve been trying to open unsuccessfully. Any idea what’s going on?

Like Preston, I don’t know what a URI is, so I’ve left it blank.

I’m writing because Yahoo Groups has suddenly become an unreliable provider. I have created four groups on Yahoo Groups over the years, and they all depend at one point or another on the ability to have synchronous discussion.

I have had that ability until now–for the past six years. Now I don’t have it.

According to the information in your posting, “it’s Verizon’s fault” because
    they are “grey-listing” messages.

You don’t seem to understand, however, that THIS IS NOT VERIZON’S FAULT. IT’S YOUR FAULT. IF YAHOO GROUPS OFFERS A SERVICE AND SAYS THAT CUSTOMERS CAN DEPEND ON THAT SERVICE AND SUDDENLY THE DEPENDABILITY DISAPPEARS, THEN YOU CAN’T BLAME SOMEONE ELSE. IT IS YAHOO GROUPS’ JOB TO PRESERVE THE INTEGRITY OF ITS SERVICE. YOU’RE NOT DOING THAT. AND IT DOESN’T SEEM TO BOTHER YOU THAT YOU ARE PROVIDING POOR SERVICE.

I use capital letters in messages, but I don’t make threats. At a certain point, I will simply have to take my business elsewhere. I like Yahoo and Yahoo Groups. But if you can’t deliver the services you promise, I will have to find someone I can depend on.

    Right now, that’s not you.

    Please fix the problem ASAP.

I manage several Yahoo! Groups. Digest seems to fixed on one. It is still broken on another. One I am not sure of (No Digest members). Another not sure of (Not active right now). Is this fix really going to happen for all groups?

All the quilting groups to which I belong have lost the Messages capability at their Yahoo home page: Stashbuster, quiltvillechat, QOVFchat, HeartStringsQuiltProject, QOVFmystery. One cannot view messages or post messages from these groups’ Yahoo home pages. It was this way erratically a couple of weeks ago, then it appeared to be reliable again, but now (0750 PDT Thursday, April 9) the home pages have been down since about 1100 yesterday morning. I’ve checked them approx. once every hour or two, and they have been down the whole time. When will they come back???

    @Cynthia H,
I’ve checked every group you mentioned and they all seem to be accessible and available now– I’m not sure what the issue was (were other members in your groups experiencing the same problem or were you the only one?)

In the future, if this happens again (which I hope it doesn’t!) please report the issue ASAP to Customer Care so someone can look into the issue. You can do this by filing a ticket here: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/original/members/forms/general.html

When was the correct word “problem” replaced by the incorrcect word

“issue” when discussing something that is not working the way it should?

The correct word here is: PROBLEM.

“…but we are ultimately dependent upon them to resolve the issue.”

If something has to be RESOLVED, that means it’s a PROBLEM.

I belong to 6 groups and have not had a problem until a few weeks ago. I was receiving daily digest messages every day, when they suddenly stopped.
I went to the group and read them for a few days, and searched around trying to understand what the problem was. I checked to see if I had “blocked” them…I had not, yet I found them in my spam folder with a yellow banner about displaying the messages. I went to the group and complained, and was offered ideas….which I had already done….so, I went to individual mailings.
Things went fine, except this is a VERY busy group and I was spending too much time on reading all of them….some over and over….BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE DO NOT TRIM their posts.!! Most annoying…
SO……I switched back to daily, HOPING things had reverted back to the way it was. It had not, and I am once again learning that you cannot go home again.
GEESH!! Fix it already. I have been here TWICE and things are the same.
Yahoo is my home base and I feel let down.

I have spent hours for over a week with verizon about my group email (sending and receiving) with no resolution. I was delighted to learn from you that they ARE the problem with “grey listing”…I have contacted them and they reply with gobbledegook. Verizon keeps giving me numbers to call that end up being ATT&T and they can’t/won’t help me because I do not have ATT&T, duh! What exactly is “grey listing” and how can I help solve this problem.

This sounds like a problem I complained about last week and got only an automated reply. Messages displayed on the home pages of SEVERAL groups I belong to are (1) incomplete, and (2) mismatched for author and content.

For example, I just now replied to a message which is not visiblt on the group’s home page, but which I received via email. My NAME now appears on the home page, but when that message is opened, IT IS NOT MINE; instead, it is the message replied to by the person I was replying to.

I find it very troubling to get no more than an automated reply to my prior complaint and see NO sign that anyone is addressing this problem.

First, the URL is if you have a website that you want others to visit. This is your websites address.

I’ve lost the daily digest for some groups, not all. The problem is lack of proper testing before putting something in production.

Yahoo is correct about ISP (Internet Service Providers) having black, grey and white list. AOL is the worst about blocking email address. What kicks this off is when a hacker gets in your server and sends out thousands of SPAM emails. A small business does its best with limited employees doing multi-duties – not like large companies with dedicated employees working on one phase of their email servers.

When something is FREE, we use it at our own risk.

I think it is ironic that you are singling out Verizon specifically because I am having the problem with mail going through AOL, Yahoo and Gmail and my internet is run through comcast…kinda makes you go hmmmmm.

I am sporadically getting emails through on both individual and daily digest modes for several different yahoo groups.

This is a VERY busy time of year for people and this really needs to get fixed ASAP!

It’s now Friday, & still no digest for my group, http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/InfertilityNetwork/
The last digest was Apr 3/09; usually there is 1 per day, although never with 25 messages. Such an arrangement (of waiting till there were 25) would not work for me as I use the group to produce an email newsletter for a small charity — most members would just unsub if they were bombarded with 25 messages in a digest; they only want 3-5 at a time.

In addition to Digests not being produced, none of the monthly files were sent out either.

Much of what is posted to the group is time-sensitive, so not being able to reach group members is very problematic for us.

When will this problem with digests be fixed? Why does it only affect a few of the Yahoo groups?

I belong to a couple of yahoo groups and I am only having trouble receiving one of them. It’s been over a week now, and nothing has come into my mailbox yet. It used to be there first thing every morning. I checked on re-subscribing but it says I’m already a member so that didn’t work. I was thinking of unsubscribing and starting over but I can’t find the url for that. Any help would be appreciated. THanks!

After the daily digest issue was “fixed” I received one the very next day, on April 10th.

Even though there have been messages posted every day to this group, I have not received another daily digest since the one.

Is it possible that after it was fixed it automatically defaulted back to *waiting* for 25 messages? There is an event coming up and we really need the digests to be going out every day.

Last week, my group was affected by the digest problem — there were none sent from Apr 4-9 inclusive. Then Yahoo said they had ‘fixed’ it & digests started being produced again, but this only lasted Apr 10-15. There have been no digests since

I’m very frustrated because the small charity I run uses the digest as an email newsletter; event listings & news stories it contains are very time-sensitive, plus members are overwhelmed & complain, or unsub, if they suddenly receive a whole batch of messages at once (as happened when last week’s problem was ‘corrected’ & they received a digest with 15 messsages in it, rather than the 3-5 they are used to each day.

I have reported this problem to Yahoo customer care, but so far have only received the auto-reply they send out, and no info specific to my problem

    DEFINITION OF URI

In computing, a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) is a compact string of characters used to identify or name a resource on the Internet.

  38. saf said,

    What is URI?

A Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) is a compact string of characters for identifying an abstract or physical resource [RFC2396]. URIs provide a simple and extensible means for identifying a resource. A URI can be further classified as a locator, a name, or both. The term “Uniform Resource Locator” (URL) refers to the subset of URI that identify resources via a representation of their primary access mechanism, rather than identifying the resource by name or by some other attribute(s) of that resource. The term “Uniform Resource Name” (URN) refers to the subset of URI that are required to remain globally unique and persistent even when the resource ceases to exist or becomes unavailable. Please refer to RFC2396 for the completed specifications.

    Example of URI:

As a mod of a few groups I’m still having issues with delayed messages, I post and often find I’m waiting quite a while for it to hit the message boards or my e-mail inbox.
They do tend to get there in the end but are nothing like immediate, and to be fair they did used to be so something, somewhere has changed.

Not being able to post quickly or in chronological order in a group you moderate is, as you can imagine, a problem.
