hey Melissa,

Two things. First, Quite a few old Yahoo! groups have had no new message activity (not counting membership changes) in years yet they continue to exist on the system. Is there any plan to purge groups with, say, no activity in the last three years?

Second, sometimes old groups become, effectively, unmoderated where a group owner's e-mail address is hard bouncing, a moderator's e-mail address is also bouncing and a third moderator is nowhere to be soon. Is there any mechanism whereby a group member can request Yahoo! Groups add them as a moderator or owner to help maintain the group?

Look forward to your reply.

Thanks,
Doug M.

I am not happy with aspects of governance on two groups I am concerned with
(refusung or failing to take/publicise postings).
What alternatives are there to formal complaints?

What can we do about VANISHING MODERATORS. I'm a member of a group that used to be very valuable but is now completely dominated by unpleasant spam messages and the group moderator's address is marked as "bouncing". Is there any way that a new group moderator can be appointed to sort out the spam problem?

Melissa,

Thanks for the information.

However, as a member of the Yahoo! Groups Roundtable for 2008, several of my fellow Roundtable members feel like "why bother". The suggestions we were asked to make were not listened to, your minds were already made up with what improvements you were going to do - and even admitted that you were surprised by our input. Then the Roundtable was discontinued almost 6 months ahead of schedule. No forewarning - just here one day and gone the next. Thrown away with the days trash.

We put a lot of time, thought, energy, hope and dedication into being Roundtable members. We also put a lot of time into the Yahoo! Groups and do it as volunteer positions. As I said before, I might as well just put up my own domain and subscribe to one of the V Bulletin programs so I can make the group work as we need it to.

With this said, why would we, or anyone for that matter, want to be a part of the Moderator Value Program when we were not valued as Roundtable members?

I do appreciate all those at Yahoo! do, especially Gordon. However, I certainly miss Jamie and Matt.

Sincerely,

Winona

I'm amazed that none of the comments here have to do with the MVP program :-).

Hi Melissa,

Can you tell me if it would be okay to post this message to our groups? I wouldn't really want to nominate myself but I think it would be great if group members knew about the program and could nominate their favorite mod. Not many that I know of read the groups blog unless they are also the moderator of a group.

Thanks,
Chevy (Karen)

@Judith Stein,
The groups you reported (prior to April 2nd) should be migrated over to the new search service and should see an improvement in search. (I just posted about this fix: http://www.ygroupsblog.com/blog/2009/04/07/update-message-search/)

We'll gradually be moving more groups over to the service in the coming weeks, so depending on where your remaining 15 groups are in the queue they should be moved over in the near future. :)
