Update on Recent Groups Issues

Update: Message delivery should be back to normal (including duplicate messages)– if you’re still experiencing delays or are receiving duplicate messages please send the full message headers from TWO of the duplicate messages to y_groups_team [at] yahoo [dot] com — http://www.fraudaid.com/find_headers.htm#service will show you how to retrieve the full headers). We’ll continue to monitor the system in case any issues arise. (03/30/09 @ 3:36 pm PDT/10:36 pm GMT)

Over the past week we know that some of you have experienced problems with your groups (both on the web and with email delivery). These issues were/are the result of a recent data center move, which we blogged about on the 19th.

As part of this move, we had also upgraded to higher performance hardware, but the upgrade didn’t work out as planned. The team has been working to resolve these issues and stabilize your experience, and we’re cautiously optimistic that we’ll have Yahoo! Groups back to normal before the weekend.

That said, we’ll definitely still be monitoring the system closely, and we encourage you to keep checking this blog for the latest updates if you experience further problems.

In addition, we’ve definitely learned some things from this incident (and from the feedback folks have been sharing about how we could better communicate), and we’ll blog about the specific steps we’re planning to take in the area of better communication around system issues in the coming weeks.

We know-I know -that this past week or so has been rough, and we apologize for all the inconvenience the problems have caused you and your groups. We can and will do better in the future.

    It is fine melissa,
If something comes up I contact customer service and hope it can be settled as soon as possible.

Will the higher performance hardware do as you guys hoped concerning the groups functionality, or has the glitches set back the optimization?

    @MK,
All is not lost, though there will still have to be some additional tweaking to the machines that will speed up things further. This will get us where we want to be as far as speed/optimization goes, but really, our biggest concern right now is making sure that you guys are able to use your groups and have a good experience.

well, my groups seem to be working good enough, only a little lag, and to be honest, you did say on the 19th that the 31st was the end date, so I will take your word for it and accept the time from now to then as the transition.

I know a lot of the comments have been vicious but, i remember one commentor saying they didn’t have these problems since yahoo groups was yahoo clubs. Even though the comment was negative that is pretty good considering that transition was years ago.:)

Just wanted to share with you how proud we are to be on Yahoo and what a fine job you are all doing. There is always going to be something, but I’m glad to say that, although the clitches come and go, we feel a certain amount of safety and stability that is truly reflective of you and the staff the work here.
Please accept our thanks and know that we appreciate the fine work that you do to keep us functioning.

Both old and newon the search doesn’t work at all Please use Beta don’t use real one for all webmail on testing So too many fall behind messages cause the problems otherwise will not get any update when the message said the due. E.G one message came in today but that supposed to be in email yesterday and that message said due yesterday to reply so got it too late USE BETA for testing and don’t use real message for testing…………..

“As part of this move, we had also upgraded to higher performance hardware, but the upgrade didn’t work out as planned.”

No kidding! If what we all experienced over the last several days was just a
slight “hiccup”, I don’t think many of us want to find out out a REAL service outage is like!.

    And she further stated:

“In addition, we’ve definitely learned some things from this incident (and from the feedback folks have been sharing about how we could better communicate), and we’ll blog about the specific steps we’re planning to take in the area of better communication around system issues next week.”

We’ll be waiting to see just how well and how much of the feedback and suggestions offered by YG’s users are incorporated into the YG team’s action plan. The plan needs to be up-front and honest about alerting us to YG service issues (”hiccups??!!) and, the team should be prepared to follow through with whatever steps they deem best for communicating information about these issues with us. After all, YG IS a method of communications, is it not? Continuing down a one-way street without street signs, though, is no longer a viable option.

    She concluded by saying:

“We know – I know – that this past week or so has been rough, and we apologize for all the inconvenience the problems have caused you and your groups. We can and will do better in the future.”

Apologies accepted – again! We all realize that unanticipated “stuff” does happen once in a while; however, over the course of the last several years, many of us have heard the “we can and will do better in the future” promise many times after many similar YG “hiccups” — er, episodes. Let’s hope that this time the teams’ promises will not prove to be as hollow as they have been and, it really will do whatever it takes to prevent or to resolve similar major service interruptions going forward.

Most of us appreciate the hard work and value the service that the YG team strives to provide and we look forward to experiencing a higher level of two way communications between the YG team and us very soon.

I’m having a serious problem with Invites. I’ve sent out over 217 invites to grow our alumni group (which is already over 1,100) with the management tools in the past few days as part of a membership growth effort…and would expect, based on past experience, that at least 30 would have joined by now. It’s only gone up by 1, which is organic growth.

I tried a test invite to my gmail, and I received it. It looks like most of them are not getting the group invites or it’s going into their spam. Or they’re joining but it’s not registering in the system – yet. I am at a loss. Please advise.

Each of the messages I send to the group is having the font color changed in some pretty erratic ways. Because this is an amputee group, meaning many members are diabetic, changing font or font color is extremely counterproductive as many of us have difficulty seeing already. Please let me know how I can stop this from happening.

Mt shortcut now takes me direct to my group but when I click on join this group I am asked for my Yahoo I.D. which I’ve forgotten as I only joined Yahoo to then join Freecycle. I posted some stuff which went so I asked for Emails to be stopped and now I can’t access anything at all. I think the word paranoid would just about sum up Freecycle’s admin and incompetent would describe Yahoo to a T. I’ve probably got more chance of walking to the moon than getting this sorted. Simply blogging about something is NOT communicating.

You should send a global message to all users, to keep
us informed when somethig affects us. I don’t normally
read blogs, and I shouldn’t have to hunt for information
which ought to be provided to me directly.

    Dear Melissa

One of my group members has just written to me telling me that she just wrote 2 messages & seemed to have lost them both. The second is almost the same as the first. She re-did the first one because she had lost it.
She says that when she pressed Preview, only a small portion
of the message appeared. And going back, showed nothing.

I know you are working hard to fix the problems but I wasn’t sure if anyone else was having the same problem. It is not a duplicate message – it seems to be a message that disappears after the Preview button is pressed.

    Thanks.

I have tried for months to get into a group and have not succeeded, as yet. First, you said my zip code was not in the U.S of A, then it was “was I from the future??? and “you” would not accept my birth date, then you would not show me the “code”! One day I got through the first step…the email. “You” said I had to wait to be accepted via email. I am still waiting to be approved.

Thanks so much. I have heard that the group that I would like to get into is very useful for my occupation. I would love to find out.

However, up until the last 2 weeks I could still sign in to yahoo groups using the alternate mobile sign in. I posted an e-mail to a Yahoo group this morning. All went well. I posted another e-mail 5 minutes later to let group members know the item of interest was spoken for. Unfortunately, I had to leave and didn’t get to see if the message was posted. I’m now back hours later, and the message did not get posted (and I’m getting lots of e-mail messages from people wanting the item and not receiving the message). I just tried to re-post the message and it’s still not working. What’s happening? One message posted fine and one 5 minutes later didn’t post.

I hope something happens soon. I am about to cancel all of my groups and my email and move to some system that works. Just before I sent this comment, I was asked for my password, and then when I entered it, the system asked me for my sign in AND password again. This has been going on for a long time. At least one or twice a day when I sign into my Yahoo account, the system says it has a problem and kicks me out. And then there is the mystery of messages not showing up.

Protocols within a group are screwed up also. When I invite someone to join my group, I should not have to “approve” them. What is going on? How can so many things go wrong with programming at the same time?

If you moved locations for better or expanded service, you got dumped on. This isn’t working and Yahoo will loose lots of money in lost revenue and clients.

I have been waiting for four hours for a message to post to one group today, and over two hours for another to post. Both messages appeared to post successfully, as in I received the messages that says “message posted” but they have never showed up.

I’ve noticed this problem, as have members in various groups I belong to, for at least two weeks, possibly longer. It’s really getting ridiculous. The responses from customer service are completely useless–if and when I actually get any. Several groups I belong to have moved their main discussion boards off of Yahoo because this happens so frequently and with so little warning and/or successful resolution.

All I can say is that when the change-over started, I completely lost the ability to open my yahoo email. I tried fiddling with cookie control, firewall settings, “expert” instruction strings, and lord knows what. Must have spent several hours getting nowhere. Finally contacted Yahoo tech service and got an automated “we’ll definitely get back to you within 24 hours” to my alternate email address and that was all. Spent the next ten days watching the number of inaccessible emails accumulating in my Yahoo email inbox.

Just a couple hours ago I turned off my Computer Associates Firewall, turned on Windows Firewall, reduced the security settings to minimum, and ~finally~ got access to my email and about 250 unread emails.

It was the first trouble I’ve had with Yahoo in something like ten years and it has been rather, err, TOTAL. Whatever you Yahoo workers did, you could use it as a Weapon of Mass Destruction. Turn it loose on Al-Qeada and they’ll be back to using payphones.

Yahoo? Are you there? I posted yesterday about the many hours long delay and other issues, well, guess what? Of the more than dozen messages I posted yesterday to various groups, two made it. Now, I get the joy of going back and *trying* to recall what I said in my first response.

I’m absolutely with the person who said he was about ready to move his groups and e-mail to a service that works; this is just ridiculous. It is absolutely impossible to reach a Yahoo tech support person–unless it’s for a paid service, and even then, you’re likely to need to block out a couple of hours of time, and be prepared to be bounced back and forth. I have already moved three domains out of Yahoo Small Business web hosting services because of these and other service issues, and am in the process of removing another one–which would already have been done, save that–yet again–I was given an incorrect transfer authorization code.

What is going on at Yahoo HQ? E-mails from years past turning up, e-mails never getting there at all, some e-mails taking longer than even the worst postal mail route to be delivered, group messages not posting, files disappearing…do you actually want us to keep using your services? If you want us to leave, please, just say so and we’ll go. Spare us all the headache, hmm?

I am also curious. Previously every time I sent a request to CS for service/technical issues, I always got a survey back. This last time, after I had expressed a fair bit of anger over the lack of competence, I got nothing. Could Yahoo be selective over who gets those surveys now?

Still experiencing missing posts and significantly delayed posts, although the duplicates seem to have been resolved. I’ve been patiently hanging in there waiting for 3/31, but it’s quite frustrating to wait ever so patiently and then see a “problem resolved” notification when at least some of us and our groups are still experiencing problems :-(

Hello, Has the new “tweaking” caused probs with downloading? The past couple of weeks I have had trouble downloading pics from various groups. Today, I waited for five mins for a pic to download and never received it. You could see material flying into the box but no download. And it doesn’t make any difference what group it is. If pics are shown as being sent, they won’t download. Most discouraging situation.

Search in the message archives is still broken. It’s been broken since at least fall 2008…not a few wks, but months. There are posts on the YG mod message board about broken search dating to Oct 08.

When is message search going to be fixed? I’ve already reported it to CC and clicked on the link provided in the 3-17-09 blog. It’s still broken.

I’m getting really frustrated. My groups, which I’m clearly members of and worked perfectly just a few weeks ago, aren’t letting me post any messages with any kind of consistency. I’ll post a comment and most comments never show up, others don’t show up for days later after the topic thread is over. It’s like I’m not even participating. Whatever is going on, it’s ruining Yahoo. I don’t see the point in even belonging anymore, but my groups are important to me, so the only option for me now is to stop posting and just lurk. I guess the people I really want to talk to I’ll just contact privately.

I’ve been using Yahoo Groups for years because it’s simple and reliable. But now it’s only simple. Messages are lost. Duplicates appear. The system seems stuck in molasses.

If speed and reliablility are lost, then I can’t host discussions here.

    Fix the problems, please.

I am having files “not accessible” in my files section, messages delayed by many minutes that I post on on my own group and on other groups delayed for up to two weeks or not ever appearing at all.

I have had my own group inaccessible, loads of problems that were posted as “fixed” still happening!

I contacted help yet again and this time they haven’t even bothered to reply! Looks like everything Microsoft gets involved in soon gets bogged down in needless bells and whistles rushed out way before they can get it right and the whole caboodle just keeps crashing.

So basically, I can access my groups, but only if I log onto Yahoo and go into each group site. I can’t access them from my email inbox like I used to do two weeks ago. Today (Saturday) I’m receiving posts from Thursday. Some posts are showing up in a timely manner, but the majority seem to be getting stuck in a Y!G black hole for hours and days.

I have been a member of Yahoo since December 2002, but I do not remember experiencing very serious problems in the reception of my e-mail. I’m having a different problem with Yahoo Groups. The website continually wants me to Verify I’m me by putting in my password when I try to edit my membership of one of the groups I am in. When I do it takes me back to the starting page of the Yahoo Groups website (the one you get to first) as it would be if you were not logged in although it has my name at the top but I have to click on the log in link and put my password in again to get the list of my groups up. It took me half an hour to change my membership of one group to web only. It is not anything like a virus at my end because my computer has just been scanned and it was virus and spyware free.

Hmm– when I just did a regular search for your group name (the one you provided in the URL here) it came right up in the group search. It shows that you created your group March 22nd. It does take a day or so to index new groups/have them show up in search results, but since your group is showing up, I’m not sure where you’re running into the issue. :)

The reason for delays in mail from groups and
other problems of group messages is most likely
due to an increased level of spam in Yahoo Groups.

All moderators and Group Owners should immediately
help the Yahoo Team by going to their group, now and
editting them so all messages are moderated.

Moderated Messages is the way to go as spammers
dont like to hang around, waiting for messages to be
    approved.

Email verification isn’t working. One of my members gets some sort of server error or server unavailable message. My tests on a new account give me a “Sorry the verification email has expired” and that it’s only valid for 5 days. The verification link in the email is activated within 30 seconds of receiving the email. I’ve tried this several times with the same result.

On 03/30/2009 I sent the email with two full headers for repeated digest messages from Glossop Freecycle as per the blog above. I’m still getting repeated messages (Sometimes hundreds a day) from this group. This is the only group I’m getting thes repeated messages from (I’m a member of several groups) and I was wondering if there a fix due any time soon?

    Many thanks for your time,

    Jon Baldry

Quite frankly I am so disgusted with Yahoo and the inability that it shows in helping to resolve simple problems, I am considering putting my group elsewhere. Now they have this Captcha thing which makes it impossible for me to send outgoing Yahoo mail. Supposed to stop spam. So I have decided to simply use my Hotmail account or my bellsouth e mail. Also the constant changing of the category is another issue. This is not what I paid for when I registered my domain with Yahoo. When is Yahoo going to learn to respect its customers. That is why they are losing business. It is like trying to turn a battleship around. They never learn. It is not a customer friendly site.
