New features for Groups Photos
As described in a previous blog post , we’re gradually rolling out the return of "attachment storage " for messages in the archives to all groups.
Meanwhile, the Yahoo! Groups team is happy to announce a few new features for Groups Photos, including the ability to upload many photos at once (similar to Flickr), the ability to set an album cover image, and the ability to comment on photos. And while this release does not include the ability to create photo sub-folders, the team is aware that this is a feature many of you want, and are looking to include it in a future release.
Now, to introduce you all to these latest additions, I’ve put together a quick walk-through highlighting the latest features, but I encourage you all to give them a try for yourselves. Once you’ve tried the new photo feature out, feel free to come back here and share your thoughts, as the team would love to know how things went!
Uploading
To give the new photos feature a spin, click on the “Photos” link in the left hand column in one of your Groups. Then, click on the album you’d like to add a photo to, or, click “Create Album” to create a new album altogether.
If you’ve opted to create a new album, you’ll first be asked to name your new album, and will be asked to set the permissions for the album (who can modify the album). If you’re adding to an established album click “Add Photo.”
Here’s where things will start to look a little different…

From this new page, you can choose to upload multiple photos at once (on a Mac, to select multiple files, click the first file you’d like to select, and then hold down the “command” key before selecting the subsequent files and hitting the “Select” button. On a PC, hold down the “control” key to do the same thing.)
Once you’ve selected the files you wish to upload, you’ll notice a field next to the file name called “Photo Name”—use this to type in whatever name you’d like for your file (40 characters max) . (1) If you accidentally grabbed a photo that you don’t want to upload, just click on the trashcan to the right. (2)
Click “Upload.” (3) (Note: if at any time you want to revert to the old photo uploader, just click “Want to use our basic uploader?” down at the bottom of the page to revert back.) (4)

Once your photos are done uploading, you’ll see a “check mark” in the “Upload Progress” column. Then click “View Your Photos” to see your newly uploaded photos in your album.

Viewing and Commenting
When clicking through to an album you might notice that things look totally different—the first thing to note for Moderators is the ability to now set an image as a “Cover Image.” (5) To do this, click through to a photo you like, and click on “Set as Cover Image” in the top left corner.
But for moderators and members alike, the two features that (probably) stand out the most is the ability to preview thumbnails in a “film strip” format (6) , and the ability to comment on a photo. (7)
Comments are restricted to 1,000 characters and display beneath the “film strip” image preview. The most recent comment will display first (on top) and the oldest comment will display last.
The “film strip” allows you to preview the next five images in the set, and enables you to quickly navigate through the album. (It’s actually more than 10x faster than navigating through using "next" photo– which is pretty awesome, if I do say so myself!)

That’s it! Those are the major features of the new Groups Photos tool, so go out, give it a try, and then come back here and let us know what you think!

I don’t quite understand what you are saying here. I’ve been able to upload as many as 5 photos at one time and the first photo in the album would be the album cover. I could change the album cover by simply rearranging the photos inside the album.
What you’re describing doesn’t seem too much different than what I’ve been doing all along.

Looks good so far, but issue 1: this is crying out for some way for moderators to keep an eye on photo comments.
Issue 2: Moderated members are allowed to comment on photos without moderation. (this fault is made worse by issue #1)
Re issue 1:
I do not see any log entries for comments, nor any way to get listing of comments added to photos in order of when the comments are made.
A group might have hundreds of photos, it is impractical for mods to scan photos on a daily basis to look for inappropriate or spammy comments. The photo sites I use have ways to monitor comments without checking every photo, and that’s what this needs.
At minimum, an entry in “web features” log. Better still would be a page listing the comment, commenter, and photo location, in order of the comments added.

Meanwhile, the attachments storage is definitely still coming. It’s just being rolled out gradually as described in the earlier blog post.

Moderators need the ability to turn comments Off & On, to be able to moderate Comments, and definitely be notified when comments are added if they wish.
Some of my groups have hundreds of members and people will be people. I foresee a moderator’s nightmare.

I like the scrolling thing in each album…that’s cool. I also like that you can upload several pictures at once. However, there are some issues that need to be addressed.
First, since some of this new stuff has been added, we are no longer getting the notices to approve the photos. They are automatically going on without moderation. I’ve double checked the settings and they are correct….nothing has been changed by us.
Second, the moderator/owner needs to have the option of allowing comments in the photos area or not having them at all….perhaps it’s should be an addon or application under the “groups lab” tab. Adding this without moderation could be dangerous for those where children may be present. With large groups this could make moderation a nightmare!

1. I have to moderate every photo because my posters tend to add NO description and the photos are worthless after a week or so since there’s no tie-in to any email posts from the photo poster describing the photo.
2. I filled the entire box (1000 characters) and tried to finish the upload and it crashed.
3. When I viewed an existing album, the old style photo descriptions appeared near the top of the screen, just under the photo title. The one ‘new style’ uploaded photo description appeared below the film strip bar at the bottom of the screen. This is not good.
4. I really need to have photo descriptions with each photo. Can there be an option to REQUIRE this?

I like it, this is a continuation of an ongoing upgrade, which I am aware of. I imagine you will add notifications for comments as well as better photo notifications in the future.
basically, just like the root message can be known when it is commented on, you need to have a recent uploads for photos and the comments on photos. But, I assume this is coming.

In August 2003, Yahoo simply trashed all the photo attachments that had been stored in my Group’s message archive since July 2000. Hundreds of carefully formatted photos. All gone. Irretrievably. A disaster.
I am very glad to hear that the ability to store attachments is to be restored. I hope that this time it is for good.

I like the slide show, that saves alot of time clicking between all the photos to check them but we do need to be able to moderate the comments
It would be useful to have the ability to turn comments on or off also to have notification of new comments.

Looks (at first glance) quite good. My two-pennies worth (Two Items)
1). Approval and or Control process
I assume only the person who uploaded the Photo can make a comment to it, is this right? If not there is a danger that inappropriate changes to the comments under the Photo could be made “in good humour” that upset the original owner and cause the Group Owner grief. I run several Military and ex-military groups and it is hard enough keeping the majority (mostly male) members under control as it is.
If anyone can add a comment or change an existing comment, then maybe not only the group owner needs to be allowed to approve comments, but the original photo uploader and/or author of the first comments, maybe even also of subsequent ones? This will become a nightmare like managing edit wars in Wikipedia for disputed views of common subjects…
Assuming this is not planned, then the need exist only (ONLY?) for a separate Photo approval for, then in this case both the posting of the photo and any comment first time and also for any edits later that may get the group owner into trouble, must be a major consideration.
It might be wise to add a member setting that allows a member to post in the group say “using group settings” (i.e. unmoderated) but be restricted to moderated approval of their ability to post pictures or individually banned from adding photos, based on known experience with that member or expected misuse.
On the member management page we have a tick box “Do not allow this member to upload files” to which maybe we could also have another tickbox that says “Member can upload files photos and photo comments, but only with prior approval” (this is independent of, and regardless of their normal group message posting moderation state)
We have the option to have new members held on moderation until the owner sees what kind of post they make and lifts restrictions or throws them out accordingly. It would be good to have a similar option on the Member management page, but totally independent of the post option, then a new member posting photos and risk from them “surprising the owner” are usually months later and long after their initial restrictions have been lifted.
2). Easier Browsing Suggestion for the Film Strip
In larger groups with loads of individual member folders or folders by sub-sections of specific interest, it would be “Nice” to allow the film strip to simply scroll over from folder to folder, say with the alternating change of two background colours in the strip, AND a static header that says what the folder name and owner (Common or individual who created the folder) is for that particular segment background colour of the strip.
There would be say three miniature views of photos against a gray background above which it says “Folder: Frankfurt” and below that “Owner: Joe49Bloggs” (their YahooID). Then before the next picture (say five from the next folder) a change of colour to black background and different folder and owner name.

So far so good, however, I’d like to see at least two changes in locating photos:
As Howard noted, (1) “Can we please have a quick navigation at the top of the photos front page, i.e. an A-Z so when you click on a letter” and/or as someone else noted, (2) can we please have a Search tool so that we can find a photo much faster by going straight to it by name.
I’m so excited you are bringing back attachments with emails because as you know, many members get stuck emailing from their own email accts and forget their passwords and can’t/don’t visit the homepage; therefore, they never get to see any photos at all.

The ability to change the photo on the group home page is broken. You can’t even delete the current picture. All you get are error messages. All my groups change the home page monthly – other groups change weekly or even daily. Please give the fix for this some priority. Thanks, Barbara

Regarding #1 – Yahoo Groups used to keep attachments available online. Now you can send email posts with attachments (if the group allows), but they are dropped for online storage.

As stated by several others, the most important thing that you for some reason decline to add, is the ability to navigate or opt “to” a particular album. It is absolutely annoying to have to scroll through almost 300 albums, as is the case with the forum I belong to, in order to find the album you are looking for!

1. Any image visible on the screen can be “downloaded” via taking a screenshot.
2. Comments need to be moderated, unless this is like in the files section where the person who creates the folder/uploads the file is only one who can create/edit this.
3. Group owners/mods need to be notified when new photos are uploaded and what folder they are uploaded to so that the owner/mod can check to make sure that the photo/comment(s) meet group norms.
4. Haven’t tried to change the photo on the front of any of the groups I own/mod, but would like to have the ability to do so, if I need to do so.

First, can you let us know when you fix the problem in being able to put a picture on the cover of a group?
Second, I agree with the others that comments must be monitored and I fear this makes a lot of work for all of us mods. Although it’s a nice idea to allow comments, I’d bet they become full of advertising and spam. I would rather just turn off the comments completely for a group than having to monitor each picture each day, which is just physically impossible when there are thousands of pictures on each group. So I think we need 3 options, one being to allow comments only with our approval, one to allow no comments, and the third to allow any comments without approval.

easier uploading for multiple photos is great idea *if* it worked. It doesn’t!
I tested out the new upload feature in 6 different gropups and it did NOT work in any of them. I can sit here all day long and click the blue “Select Files” button and nothing happens. NOTHING. Ever. No next step, no selection boxes, no error message. Nothing at all. Just a completely non-functioning button.

1) I don’t see any of the new features in the photo albums of my group. None of the screenshots in the walkthrough look like what our group has — it looks the same as it always did. Are these new features being rolled out incrementally, or are all groups supposed to have them? Mine didn’t as of just a few minutes ago.
2) I can change the image on the coverpage easily by clicking the “edit” button next to the description, then scrolling down on the edit page and clicking the “edit” button next to the picture. If this ability disappears with the new photo album features, I don’t want the new features! I rotate the coverpage banners regularly and would not want to be stuck with whatever image happens to be in place when the new photo album features are applied.
3) I agree with everyone about the need for a mod to be able to turn the commenting on and off and to have moderated members post only moderated comments. My own group is small and very well-behaved (!), and membership requires approval, but I belong to some groups with hundreds of members, and I can see that this could easily become an issue, particularly with groups with large memberships.

It seems a lot like the old way of adding 5 photos at a time. It is easy to use. I’m glad you’re still working on the photos features. Our group is signed up for the attachment feature, but so far it has not appeared in our left hand column. In the meantime, we are now able to copy a photo out of our albums and paste it into the body of our posts. This is nice. However, some members are able to paste pictures in the posts that are not in an album in our group. Only a few are able to do this. I definitely like having photos in the posts, it makes them so much more colorful and interesting. We are a small private group of friends, so not much to worry about. I can see where it would be a problem with a large group and having no control over what people post.
Thank you for working on this. We were thinking of switching our group home because everyone wanted the photo in the post feature. Now they are all happy to stay here!

You’re right– before you could upload 5 photos at once, but now you can upload even more. (Makes grabbing a whole set from an event easy).
As for the album cover comment, this feature makes it much easier to establish an cover image– instead of having to rearrange the order of your photos, you can just click the link at the top and select whatever photo, in whatever order you want, to be your album cover. It cuts out the middle steps and the extra hassle.

As others have said, there needs to be some form of moderation ability on the comments feature..
Spammers will jump on this feature like fleas on a dog.
With hundreds of albums and thousands of images it would be impossible for owner/moderators to maintain this otherwise.

Unfortunately, yes, but no matter how secure or “locked down” we make your photos, users who are committed to snagging your photos are going to find a way to do it. (Many just take screenshots of the desired image, etc.)
The only way YOU can personally combat this issue is to watermark your images if you’re concerned with someone stealing them or passing them off as their own. This won’t prevent them from grabbing the photo, but it will help in proving that the image was yours to begin with.

No, any group member can comment on an image– not just the uploader.
We’re aware of the need for a comment moderation system and appreciate everyone’s comments here regarding that, and the team is definitely looking into including that feature to make all of your lives easier.

If you uploaded/commented whist we were pushing out the release you might have encountered a mini bug that was the result of the entire release not being ready. (It’s like getting a package half wrapped– you can kind of see the present but not all of it, and still have to do a little work before you can use it).

All groups have these features– try creating a new album or adding a new photo to an existing album and you’ll see these new features.
In response to your second comment, be sure to check out feature #5– this allows you to select ANY image from the album as your album cover, which will allow you to rotate your cover image any time you want.

The 1,000 character limit is only for comments on the image, not the title of the image. Image titles have a character max of 40– if you’re having upload issues this could be the problem.

There’s been a glitch with the GROUP PHOTO FEATURE [home-page] for just about 24 hours… I contacted Customer Care [no response yet]… This glitch is a big problem for me because I use the home-page image to augment the discussions… I therefore change the image several times a day as the discussion threads evolve… At any rate, I’ve tried changing the GROUP PHOTO
at least 100 times in the last 24 hours but it’s still stuck on an old image… Can’t upload a new one… What about the threads? The hot topic in my group has become “what’s wrong with the home-page image”… The sooner the better on this glitch repair… This feature is really important… Thanks!

Many thanks for continuing to upgrade Yahoo Groups
. I haven’t seen anything new on our photo albums though, but maybe a) my groups aren’t included yet in the implementation of the new features, or b) no new albums have been added to my groups where the new features are applicable.
Two things would be helpful to me though as group moderator:
1) that I’d get notified when somebody upload photos/albums, just like with the files. I don’t go to the group site regularly and unless a member says he/she has uploaded some new photos, I wouldn’t know it immediately. Sometimes I’d be waiting for photos that have actually been uploaded already months before! Moderation is also more effective if the moderator is immediately informed of any change in the groups.
2) that one can have the option of arranging albums alphabetically, chronologically, etc. If there can only be one option for the album arrangement, chronological is the best for my groups, but I realize other moderators would have other preferences.
Again, my thanks for the improvements, and also to the others who post comments which address issues that affect my groups as well.

Melissa, I did report it, but in the past my experience with reporting things has not been good. Usually all I get is a canned reply that doens’t address the specifics of the problem.
(Like recently I reported that there was a problem in the web beacons opt-out that required me to opt-out every time I opened my browser desptie that my cookies werre set correctly. First reply I got was somehting about cookies beig irrelevant with no solution on how to stay opted out. I wrote back saying that I needed a solution for this to work and got another reply that it was a problem with cookies and told me in great detail how to fix my cookies so that I could login and stay logged in – logging in and staying looged in was never the issue! Not once in 2 replies did anyone even come close to addressing the web beacons opt-out issue! I doubt I’ll ever get a reply to the original question/problem)
So…. I suspect that if/when I get a reply about the multiple upload button not working they will come back with a caned repsonse for something else completely unrelated. That’s just the way it goes.

I’m hoping by posting here that someone has come up with a solution on how to make the “Select Files” button work. Currently it still does not work. Nothing at all happens when I click it. Possibly these new features were only activated or tested in IE? If so, that’s garbage. Features need to work in all the popular browsers.
And yes, as a moderator on several groups, the ability to moderate and/or turn off the comments feature is an absolute necessity!

Love the multiple upload ability and especially like the slide show. I also like the new sort capabilities. However, I’m with most other posters here that we very badly need some form of moderation on the comments. Otherwise, I foresee huge issues down the road.

Hi All
My first upload was to a group that I own, and I selected 243 jpgs
that totaled under 50mb. Other than the files being shown in a different
and mixed up sequence, all went fine.
The progress bar for each file worked fine, the checkmarks appeared as each was completed and the File Name box disappeared. Pictures all showed up in the “Last 7 Days”, on the home page, and the mini slide
show worked fine.
It appears that the difference in using the “Set as Cover Image” as
apposed to moving one with the rearrange feature, is that it remains
in place after any sort command other than “Last Modified” is used.
Even then it appears right after any modified photos.
Now, should the info in the upload instructions be 100mb or
100 files or both???
My next attempt was not so successful. Used the same jpgs in the
same way in a group of which I am neither owner or moderator.
The first upload try gave an error notice advising a “100 file limit”
and to remove extra files. Because the files for upload are not in the
same order as I selected them, it would be very difficult to know which
files to choose for the remaining uploads. So I reloaded 100 jpgs, only
to get the same error and message. Removed 1 jpg – same error and message for my now 99 files. Reloaded 50 jpgs, and all went well.
Tried 100 on the next upload, same error. Dropped to 99 again and
all went well.
Perhaps one of us cannot count . Final balance of jpgs were
now under 100 and went without a problem. I did however notice
the check marks were mostly missing, and some File Name boxes
were left behind. Once that was all over everything in the album
worked as advertised.
Would rather the photos upload in the order they are selected,
or perhaps a choice of alphabetical order.
The Comments box for each photo is ok for the owner
to explain or describe his photo, but not sure that I would
bother to check for comments from others.
Now about the Nested Albums and a Search feature …..

I have been screaming at Yahoo to improve their photo upload process. Selecting one picture at a time (5 Max per upload) was excruciating slow. Yes, Ma’am, may I please upload another. I just now uploaded 57 pictures to my group in 2 minutes instead of the 30+ minutes it use to take. Pictures were out of order, but some more tweaks should fix it. At least a major obstacle has been fixed. Thank you, Yahoo.

I love this feature. I especially like that you can scroll through the thumbnails before enlarging the picture.
for the comments, I think you should give the moderator the option of enabling or restricting comments.
I especially love that I can now add many photos at once.

regarding photo comment feature: I’m a member of a very large active group with a lot of group postings….it seems very impractical to also have to look back into the various albums to read comments that are placed below photos that I’ve posted in the past or other members have posted. Maybe if the photo comments appeared in the group postings too.

This doesn’t affect adult groups any more than the old photos system did– you’re still held to the same TOS and Community Guidelines as before– none of that has changed.
Best rule of thumb? If you’re not sure, don’t post it!

I only ask for one further feature for you to work on (besides sub folders, which your already working on)
The ability to DOWNLOAD all photos in your groups, or in a select folder. This would be great if one wanted to delete their groups,but wished to keep their pics for future groups.

With your “old” system, my JPGs are rejected with “unable to resize” message (which is not true). Also, I’m unable to delete my empty album.
With the new system, you accepted my JPGs (the little thermometer showed them uploading), but they are neither listed or displayed. Nor can I delete this second album I created (error 105, no permission to do this).
Yet other people in the group ARE able to create albums and upload pix.

Being able to upload more pictures at a time is a Very Good Thing for those of us who are migrating collections of photos from one place to another, and the fact that we’re limited to 100Mb at a time is annoying but tolerable, but limiting a given upload to 100 images (and then not warning people about that in advance) is very very annoying, especially when the limit appears to be completely arbitrary. Especially when first establishing a new group, we might need to upload a LARGE number of images (perhaps the union of several other groups or sites that the new group is replacing) and having to do it 100 pictures at a time is still a lot more work than is desirable.
Of course, it’s still better than the old way, there’s no way I would upload 7000 pictures five at a time, and selecting even those five individually. But now that Yahoogroups is making it possible to use these groups more effectively, it would be nice (at least for the moderators!) to be able to more easily transfer large groups of images in (or out!).

I want to give Yahoo two big ole Texas sized thumbs up. The first “thumb up” is the multiple file uploader for photos in the groups. I am so glad Yahoo brought this feature back.
The second “thumb up” is the 100 GB storage capacity in the groups photos section. I have several adult groups and right now I am in the process of putting all the photos in my adult groups in to a single group, since there is 100 GB of storage space.
Two questions, however. I was uploading some pictures and I noticed them uploading slower than usual. I was using the advanced uploader and it came upon a picture it wasn’t able to upload and the entire upload process just stopped. Why didn’t it finish uploading the remaining photos? Second question; When I clicked cancel at the bottom of the upload page, I got a message that my connection was refused. I went back to the photo albums clicked on the album I was uploading to and uploaded the remaining photos without a problem. Why did this happen?
I know this is fairly lengthy and i apologize, but any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Question about the upload hiccup– did you try reuploading the remaining photos as a separate batch? Did they successfully upload? Its possible there was something about that particular photo that it didn’t like…. or that combination of photos.
I’m a bit confused on your second question– why did you click cancel? Was this in regards to the first portion of the question (the upload hiccup)? Nevertheless, I’ll forward your comments on to the photos team and see if they have a few more answers, but it’s possible it was just that one photo.

Are you adding the names before you add all the photos to your list, or as you add them? (Sorry, I think that’s worded poorly– maybe this is more clear… are you:
Option 1: Selecting files from computer, adding names, selecting more files from computer, adding more names, then uploading
Option 2: Selecting files from computer, selecting additional files from computer, then adding names all at once, then uploading
If you’re doing Option 1, the act of re-selecting photos could be why you’re losing the names. Try Option 2 instead and let me know if you’re still losing the names.

I am the owner of a MODERATED group. I do not want members to be able to post messages under the photos without my approval of the messages first, just as with posting normal messages. They must first be approved. Is this possible with the comments under the photos? Thank you.

The lines get cut as if the text table was larger and there was another table on top not letting see what’s under it.

Thank you. I was having problems with unwanted spam and dirty postings at my groups so I switched the settings to Moderate and that solved the problem because none of those messages could get posted any longer since I first had to approve them. Now, the few trouble makers in the group can ruin the group for everyone by spamming and posting “porn” remarks under the photos via their own captions. There needs to be some way for the moderator to approve those postings first before they appear under the photos and upset the person in the photo who is the recipient of the nasty remarks. I hope this can be looked into quickly. Thank you very much.

I’ve gotten used to the new photo feature of being able to leave comments about specific photos. I haven’t been able to figure out if there is a way to announce new comments on the group’s main page. Some groups have hundreds of photos. It is really time consuming to hunt for comments.
You know how the group lets a member know on the main page when new photos have been added? I think the same thing should be done for comments about photos. Is this possible at all?

I want a button in membership settings for each member of my group to allow or disallow him to post comments. ( Like “File Upload: Disallow this member from uploading files”

The Basic and Advanced Photo Uploader is broken,
there is no way more than 1 picture can be uploaded,
because as soon as you click more files,to highlight them,
he previous one is no longer highlighted.
The basic uploader should be the default, because
it is the only one that works.
Also why is it necessary to keep asking me every 5 pics
if I want to use the basic uploader as I am using it because
the advanced uploader is broken , it never,ever worked.
The uploader should have a cookie in it to remember
I was using it.

The best place to get help on an issue is Customer Care– not Answers or the blog (though the blog is your second best resource– though it’s a great resource on finding out information on the latest issues and features). Also, the way Yahoo! Answers is set up is that it’s for other people to answer your questions– not Yahoo!. It’s just a Yahoo! hosted service.
Now for your issue: to select multiple photos you can’t just click on separate photos. On a Mac, to select multiple files, click the first file you’d like to select, and then hold down the “command” key before selecting the subsequent files and hitting the “Select” button. On a PC, hold down the “control” key to do the same thing. If you’re doing this and are still having trouble, please report this issue to Customer Care (using the link I provided above) as we need you to open a “bug”/ticket first to continue to investigate the issue.

responses (if they bother to reply at all ) that does not
even answer the question, quite often they answer a

I do not have a mac and I followed the instructions to
highlight the files, I wanted to upload and every time
I highlighted another the previous one became unhighlighted.
The advanced photo uploader does not work , it is broken.
I use the basic photo uploader because the advanced
photo uploader is broken it never ever worked ,
so please fix the uploader so I do not have to be asked
every 5 photos if I want to use the basic uploader
as the basic photo uploader is the only one that works ,
surely there can be a cookie installed that will remember,
I was using it .
Perhaps the easiest solution would be to make the basic
uploader the default option and then you can get on with
fixing the advanced uploader.?

Is this meant to be an IMPROVEMENT?
Take one of the groups I own, for example, Jokers United. Many of the jokes are attachments which until now has meant that members have had to receive individual mails to get them. Not convenient for some.
Is this new system any better? No, not at all.
If I have them shown on the group only then members can only see them, not download them which they may want to do if they want to forward the joke to their friends. Better for people on digest/web view only, worse for those on individual mails.
Have them in messages only and not stored on the group – no different from how things were before.
WHY can’t it be possible to have BOTH?

That is correct the advanced photo uploader is broken,
I am not sure when Yahoo will be able to fix it, the
best you can do is use the basic uploader ,
to upload 5 pics at a time.
We were limitted to uploading 5 photos at a time,
before the Yahoo Techies fiddled with it and
gave us a maximum of 5 photos to be uploaded
at a time.
Seems like a waste of time to fiddle with the uploader
and not increase the amount of photos that can be
uploaded.
The only other change is that they have introduced a
link to the basic uploader, every 5 photos, where previously,
clicking add photos would immediately take us
direct to the upload page.

I agree, leave it alone. It’s perfectly fine the way it is. Why do site administrators get bored and fiddle with things that work? Please, go fiddle with something else and leave this alone. It ain’t broke, so don’t “fix” it.
On a related note, someone posted that “We have never had photos stored with original emails.” Yes, we did…until about five years ago. At that time, not only were new attachments no longer archived, those that were already in the message archives were stripped from the posts they were attached to. That one change alone was responsible for many groups switching to Google, where they still archive attachments. They also don’t introduce sweeping changes like this latest one without letting group owners know about it.
Don’t tell me I should have read about it in this blog. I never knew about this blog before today, either. There’s a group set up by YahooGroups for the purpose of sending this kind of info to group owners and moderators, but YahooGroups never uses it.

I have an aviation photo posting group here on Yahoo Groups; 387 members, over 39,000 posts, been here on Yahoo since early 2002. My members are strongly telling me that they don’t want these changes and I am currently conducting a poll whether to move to Google Groups and the early results are that 90% of members are in favour of moving to Google soonest. The over-riding issue is photo attachments which previously have been via e-mails which are easy to view and download, now they have to be via the group home page and my members don’t like that at all. It would have been nice to have been consulted first rather than been presented with a ‘fait accompli’ and to be very honest I really doubt if my group will still be here in two weeks time though I am doing my best to put a positive face on this sudden change. The lack of communication has been breathtaking and I fear there is little that I can do to pursuade members to stay here on Yahoo. I feel really embarrassed to be honest. Oh well, thanks for the seven years I suppose.

When I get a message with photos now, I don’t get a paperclip on my message (outlook) to indicate there is an attachment. It means I can’t sort by the paperclip to find the message later on. I’d like my email service to see it as an attachment.
When I try to save the photos to my harddrive, I can’t find a way to “select all” so I have to select and save one at a time. And when I save one at a time, it doesn’t leave the folder open and just continue to save to the same folder so I have to keep going back in and opening the folder for each photo.

when i upload a group of photos, whether 2 or 20, in each case every alternate photo is successfully uploaded and the remaining alternate photos are marked w/an exclamation mark (!) in a triangle. This is consistent. I have to go in and reselect the !-marked photos, upload again, at which point every alternate photo uploads successfully and the others do not. In order to upload 18 photos, I had to go thru select/upload 5 times. Ex: #1upload: selected 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,17,18. 1,3,5,7,9,…17 successfully uploaded. 2,4,6,8,…18 were marked !. #2upload: selected 2,4,6,…18. 2,6,10,14,18 uploaded. 4,8,12,16 marked !. #3upload: selected 4,8,12,16. 4, 12 successful, 8 & 16 marked !. #4 upload: selected 8, 16. 8 loaded. #5 upload: selected and successfully uploaded #16.

Moderators need the ability to turn comments Off & On, to be able to moderate Comments, and definitely be notified when comments are added if they wish.
Some of my groups have hundreds of members and people will be people. I foresee a moderator’s nightmare.

The upload process reorders the pictures sequencing other than alphabetical by name, even if I click/select the pictures one at a time! What logic is the uploader using to sort the pictures? This is really frustrating when, for example, I upload 68 pictures and all of a sudden they are in some random sequence, completely out of order from how I want them to appear in the album! Am I missing something here? I don’t want to have to go in the re-arrange pictures mode and manually re-arrange them!

This does not work for me. I have recintly got a new PC using Windows Vista, whereas my old one used Windows XP. Advanced uploader did work on the old PC. Now I have to use the basic uploader. Any one got any ideas as to how to get the Advanced uploader to work?? Thanks.

Really like the photo slide bar feature. Why do some pics reduce size after being uploaded to group photos? Most pics have large pixel dimensions. After a week or so they appear smaller than when originally added.

The moderator should have the option to turn on, or off the
Add Comments
feature in relation to photos.
If the group is designed so that only moderators can add photos, the default for Add Comments should be off.
A moderator used to have the capacity to control the structure of the group in terms of what participants can do in it, easily, and now that control is taken away from the moderator.
If you must take away that control, at least give moderators who want to retain that control, the option to return to having that control.
You do that by having whether there is an Add Comments feature for photos for a particular group under the control of the moderator.
You might have default for this as on, in groups where anyone can add photos. More generally I think default should be off.

For the past week or so, I’ve been unable to upload photos to my Group and I found out the problem was with the “Yahoo Update” pop-up that gives me the choice of sharing the update or not. It didn’t matter what computer or browser I used, I would get the same problem.
After consulting Yahoo Customer Service, I went to all my groups and all my Yahoo account settings and changed them so that I would share my updates with no one. Now I can upload. Obviously Yahoo has a bug in there somewhere….
If any of you have the ATT/Yahoo DSL service with a combined “sbcglobal.net” ID, you will have to sign-on separately to that ID and change those settings as well.
I hope this prevents others from getting headaches.

How can I sort my yahoo group album (photos) from accending to descending dates? I put dates first on the title and I need to sort them according to the latest upload, how can I do that?
