Groups Update: Attachment Beta

First off, thank you to all of you who expressed an interest in the attachment beta. The interest in this feature was overwhelming, and we’re adding groups on a regular basis, so if you signed up but don’t see the “attachment” link in the left hand column yet, don’t worry– we’re enabling new groups every day, so yours will probably be next!

Beta Testers : We look forward to hearing your feedback about the new feature, and know that a few of you have already begun to share your thoughts and test it out in some of the Groups about Groups, and in your own groups. Please feel free to share your thoughts—both good and bad—in the Y! Groups Attachment Beta Group. Email your thoughts to: ygattachmentbeta [at] yahoogroups [dot] com

Missing Attachment Link: While a handful of you actively test out this new feature, a few of you may have come across a bit of a bug: if you’re not part of the beta, when you upload an attachment to your Group, you may still see the “Attachments: (to view, click Attachments under left navigation bar)” message. Feel free to ignore this message, and access your attachment as you normally would—this is a bug that relates back to the new attachment beta we’re testing, and are working to fix it. We should have a patch out within the next two weeks and thank you for your patience!

I’ve used this feature twice already to retrieve attachments for members who deleted the email too quick.
I like the “copy” feature which allows members to grab what they missed before I delete the attachments.
I’ve still got to try a couple links to see what they do.

Will members be able to access this feature ?
    thanx

I have never used Yahoo groups before and when I go to view the attachments I do not see them anywhere under the “left navigation panel” as it descibes in the email posted. Is there a setting or switch I need to set somewhere to be able to view the attachments associated with the different emails posted on the site? Thanks again.

So, I just joined my first Yahoo! group. I am a frequent user of facebook, so my first thought was to make/change my profile picture. However, when I hit the “Change Photo” button on my profile page, I realized that it was only a void javascript “javascript:void(0);”. I would really appreciate a fix.

I know this isn’t relevant to your blog post, but this was the only place I could see to bring it to someone’s attention.

Why did you have to try to reinvent the wheel?

The attachment service that was provided 4 years agao was ideal – why didn’t you just reinstate the old – it worked fine.

I will be leaving any groups that adopt this form of messaging – the clicking is enough to drive a person crazy (all ready tried it). Much prefered the use of my Delete button.

I really don’t know how you can profess to having a positive response to the change – all I have seen so far is unpleasant comments about it in Groups that have it. Most requesting to have the “Old Way” reinstated by the Moderators/Owners

I haven’t seen the new way yet, but I agree with ozzleatherbear. The old way worked just fine, it was a real shame they did away with that feature.

we are using the Groups Beta Applications.

the profile sheet is great for recording and managing all the relevant member’s information in a comprehensive manner.

there are, as well, specific advantages in having separate and quick references for birthday, addresses/contact details.

however, some information need to be re-entered in the quick references that have already been encoded in the profile sheet.

consider this : wouldn’t it be cool if we only needed to fill out the profile sheet and yahoo would automatically lift the information needed for the birthday and address book applications?

    thanks.

Why don’t you have a live chat room box on this, like facebook has. It should have a click on listing of members of the “group” that is set up and members, which shows who’s active on line.

a private chat box and a general everyone chat box would be good.

My group loves the new attachment system so far. In our humble opinion the new system is MUCH better than the old way of attaching full size photos to messages. We have many non-US members who still pay for email by the byte as well as rural members with slow dial up connections – these people would not be able to live with the size of the message attachments under the ‘old’ method. We don’t see the few clicks that are required to get to a full size attachment (if you want to see it) as being any big deal. Thanks to the Yahoo team for the thought that went into this attachment system.

I’ve 2 groups registered to try this beta application, but seems like there are more than 1800 groups are in the waiting list database there.
How long should our groups wait for using this feature?
We are having problems with the attachment size since the limit was upgrade to 15 MB, because there are still members in my groups who use dial-up. And some members with fast internet connection still posting huge files with their emails.
I think this feature is worth to be activated soon, because many of us need to use it.
    Thank You.

For Gods sake, why do you have to keep messing around. Both onelist, then egroups found the groups functioned well enough. Then along comes yahoo and messes up everything it touches.

You have a REVERSE midas touch…

I subscribe to several groups and help monitor a few … group members in general DO NOT LIKE the new attachment feature.
    1) If the group receives forwarded email from several other groups (more often then not), and the receiving member is not a member of the original sending group, the receiver is notable to view the attachment.
    2) Most members, it seems, desire to archive or store received email locally on their private personal drives, or what ever. When they access some of the older email with the new attachment format, they can not view it, because of being deleted from the attachment folder.
    3) This attachment feature is in a way … duplication of the Photo folder.
    4) What was wrong with the former email package?
    5) Is this another garbage repair job coming from the new American fix-it everything administration
    6) Did someone think about this for a few minutes or ask Group administrators’ for advice.
    7) There are thousands of Yahoo Groups with at lest one administrator per group, likely with high computer degrees w/ 1000’s times more experience than your private group. Imagine the Millions of Euros of programming help you can get for free, by … asking the Group Administrators for input help, before you make a Beta change.
    8) There is a LOT grumbling in the groups because of nonsense changes that have to be excepted … maybe that is why competitors are growing faster. Is Yahoo so BIG that like Microsoft you no longer care about the individuals?

I second the request for being able to opt out of the attachments program. This “feature” means I can no longer read my group email offline, which is a major hassle.

  36. Ian Caldwell said,

I do appreciate the new attachments feature, with two caveats:
    1) The link to attachments does not appear on my discussion group page! The only time I see the link is when I am on the management page… not something that members of the group can do!
    2) There should still be an option to both make the attachments available online and include them in emails (maybe with a size limitation – bigger than 500kb or 1MB are only available online?)

  37. John Ackers said,

    May 29, 2009 @ 5:15 am

I think this is a great new feature. It’s really good for large groups where only a few people need or want the attachment. It should also substantially reduce network bandwidth (and therefore carbon emissions) and the amount of storage people need locally for email (if they don’t carefully manage their email).

When is it going to be available for yahoo.co.uk groups?

Is there a file name size restriction as a result of this change. Long file names are being truncated.

Can you please allow users to disable the new attachment mode?

It really bugs when a message that has an attachment breaks a conversation on gmail, and forces everyone to see the new message separated. Also I wanto to have direct access to my files, not having to click anything extra. thanks..
