Groups Update: Message Search, Moderator Logs, Bounce Management
I wanted to keep you all up to date on a few issues that might be impacting your experience on Yahoo! Groups.
Message Search: Some of you may be experiencing issues with the message search feature within your group. This bug may present itself by either returning no search results or only partial search results when using the message archive search feature. In the past we have been able to solve this problem on a group-by-group basis by manually re-indexing affected groups when we become aware of the issue. The bad news is that this fix isn’t currently working. The good news is, is that we’re working on a permanent solution that will prevent the issue from happening in the future. We know that this issue can be frustrating for those of you looking for particular messages, but we assure you that the team is working hard to restore this feature for the affected groups.
Moderator Logs: Some of you may have noticed a lapse in your moderator log records. Our team has resolved the issue, and all of the logs should be up to date (but you might notice a few of the logs are now out of order or are displaying the wrong date or time).
Bounce Management: As many of you have noticed, the bounce status on the member page is no longer working correctly. This is manifesting itself in three ways: bounce history numbers are showing as “0” instead of the correct amount; the “Send Reactivation Request” button is not actually sending reactivation requests; and members are being listed on the bounce page even when they are no longer bouncing. We understand what is causing this problem and are working on a fix, and will update you as soon as the problem has been resolved. In the interim, if you or a member of your group is in bounce status they can “unbounce” yourself by going here : http://groups.yahoo.com/member/preferences/email/view and clicking on the “unbounce” link under the bouncing email address.
If you are experiencing an issue with Groups that is not listed above please be sure to contact Customer Care . Please note that anytime you report an issue to Customer Care, you are creating a “ticket” for our teams and is the first step in resolving the issue.
Thanks for your patience as we work together to make Yahoo! Groups better!

We are one of the Groups experiencing no search ability on our message archives – this could not have come at a worse time for us.
Our Group which has been semi-dormant since 2002 has recently come to life (it is a pension Group for a company that has just gone chapter 11), with the group more than doubling in size in a very short time, and the message volume increasing by 30 fold or more. Many new members are not familiar with Yahoo Groups (some don’t even know how to use email properly), so even without the Search problem we have a hard time keeping the caos at bay.
Please “team” – help us by fixing the Search problem quickly.

I am one of the group owners having an issue member bouncing showing as a 0 bounce history and this has like I said for the past month been going on for a month or so.
When is this issue gonna get a fix?
Thank you.

Please fix the bouncing members issue. Has been over 1 month & can’t see where it is being worked on. I filled out the customer care form & within a few days was sent a survey to rate the fix. I gave the survey very low marks because the problem wasn’t fixed.

It hasn’t been a month for the bounce history problems, but we agree that it’s been too long. The good news is that we hope to be able to have a fix in place in the coming week.
The message search issue is a harder one, unfortunately, so I wouldn’t expect a fix before the end of the first week of March. The good news here is that this fix should be a much more stable, permanent fix than the one we have used to fix message search problems in the past.
In the past, we would simply reindex message archives that had become corrupted, which would (at least temporarily) fix the problem for that group but wouldn’t prevent the problem from recurring or help other groups.
Now, we are working on a much more fundamental overhaul of this system that should make message search for all groups much more stable and reliable. We’ve been working on this for awhile, but the surge of recent problems with message surge have pushed us to up the priority on this one dramatically. And we are close to having the new system ready to go to QA.

Hmm, I am receiving multiple copies of the same email message — more than 30 since yesterday afternoon! A couple of other people in my group have also been receiving multiples of this message. I don’t know if this is related to the problems described in the blog posting, but thought I would throw it out there and add to the pile

Members are still reporting the multiple email issue, is anything being done about it? I have people complaining about being sent the same message 8-9 times, did someone at Yahoo fall asleep with their finger on the ’send’ button?
Can you let me know if you’re working on the issue?? Please??

Does anybody part of the Yahoo Team have any idea when a “fix” is gonna be pushed thru for the bouncing members,
It is really getting frustrating to say the least not being able to do reactivations.
Thanks so much in advance,

@Kashy,
If you could please report the issue to Customer Care http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/original/members/forms/forms_index.html and be sure to forward to them the full message headers of the duplicate messages, that would help the team resolve the issue.
You can find out how to send the complete message headers by reading an old post, here: http://www.ygroupsblog.com/blog/2008/11/27/duplicate-message-bug/
Thanks!

Hi Melissa,
I have an unusual situation with a group. The owner is no longer active, and the moderator’s email shows to be bouncing. Hence there is no way to get any help on a specific matter with the group! Another member is as equally frustrated as I. What should we do?
Thanks,
John
Melissa Daniels said,

Hi John,
Unfortunately, this isn’t as an unusual of a situation as you might think. Abandoned groups is a prevalent issue and we’re currently working on a solution to address the problem. In your particular situation, if there’s another moderator or owner of the group, you can try petitioning them for moderator privileges to curtail this issue in the future.
I’m not sure what you mean by “specific matter with the group”– if you’re experiencing difficulty with the group itself, you can report it to Customer Care, or you can shoot me an email at y_groups_team [at] yahoo [dot] com.

Nice to see an acknowledgment of the malfunction with Messages search, but it’s been a problem at our group, continuously and without relief, for at least *seven weeks* now (reported twice to Customer Care). We know we’re not the only group that’s experienced the glitch for that long. Seven weeks (or more) and still no fix in sight??

Search has been broken for seemingly several months now and we are really suffering. We rely on this function to search out events which are posted related to facilitators or teachers — 450 people on the membership list.
What’s the expected turnaround time for a fix. This is pretty basic functionality, and leaving it broken for this long, is really unacceptable.
I am considering moving everyone over to Facebook —

@Kathleen,
I understand your frustration, but I assure you it has not been several months. In fact, it’s only been a few weeks. We first reported this outage on February 20th. I can assure you that the team is working to resolve the issue, and as soon as it’s completely resolved we’ll post about it here.
Thanks for your patience.

@Butch,
I know the issue is frustrating, and as I mentioned to Kathleen above, the team is working hard to resolve this issue, but unfortunately, it’s a bit more precarious than anticipated. We’re all aware of how important search is to each of you, and how badly you all want it back, and are doing our best to get things back up and running as soon as possible.
Thanks for understanding.

We have a group and also the sad problem with the bouncing messages.
Some of our members don’t get messages anymor.
I tried to unsubscribe them and subscribe them again but nothing changed…
I read your messages about the problem and wait for the FIX…
I tried the http://groups.yahoo.com/member/preferences/email/view
link but there I found only my e-mail addresses.
How can I do the same for the rest of the group members?
Can you e-mail me an answer please?
Thanks in advance,

Hi I see where several people from yahoo are saying the search feature is a recent problem. It is listed in these blogs that it has only been out for a few weeks, since Feb. 20th. The search feature went out in my group in the middle of December 2008 and it has not ever came back up. I emailed yahoo on December 21st about the problem. I use this feature several times a day. So I know for a fact that this has been an issue for months. I have dealt with it for months now. I am getting very frusterated with Yahoo as are most on here. I was told when I emailed on Dec. 21st that my group would be put in the priority list for fixing the problem. Other groups which I am a member who do not use this search feature have had there search feature become operable again, yet my group, which was supposed to be a priority since I emailed has not…….how does that work???
I would just like to reiterate to yahoo, this is not a new problem which occured within the last few weeks. This has been happening for 3 MONTHS at least in my group! And I emailed you and got a response so you should have had this problem fixed already.

As of today, 16 March 2009, the search function is working now for my yahoo group messages after being broken for at least four weeks. Kudos to the team at yahoo that fixed the problem! However, I can imagine that google groups would never face such a problem, and certainly not for a time of four weeks. I am considering moving my yahoo group to google groups to avoid any future problems.
