You asked, we listened – Storing Email Attachments

Update: 12/4 11:20 AM PT- We’re aware of the problem some groups are having approving pending messages with images and are working on a fix. This issue is unrelated to the coming change with attachment storage (no code for that has yet been pushed to production).

Back by popular demand and coming soon — Yahoo! Groups will be enhancing and reinstating a feature that will give moderators the ability to archive/store email attachments in Groups (removed 2003). This will allow your group members to retrieve attachments along with the original message at any time and not have to store them on their computers.

Benefits at a glance:

  • Adds valuable content to the group archive accessible by current/future users
  • Enables users to upload content (photos, files etc.) with an email vs. having to upload each file
  • Reduces the size of emails, optimal for low bandwidth, dial-up users
  • Enables digest and web only members to have access to attachments

Please keep in mind that this new feature is still in early beta, which means:

  • You can expect to see bugs
  • You can expect to see missing features and usability problems
  • You can expect down time and even the removal of the feature (if it turns out there are unforeseen technical problems)

This feature will be available in the next few weeks; we’ll post more information as we get closer to the release date with details.

We look forward to hearing about how you like this feature and what we can do to make it even better.

Thanks!
Yahoo! Groups Team

    WOW!
    It’s about time.
So many times I have been so angry for Yahoo taking over egroups simply because of that one thing….. stopping storage of attachments.
    NOW YA GONNA FIX THAT!
    HOORAY!

this is really a great news !

but the problems begin already today
since tonight we can’t see the pictures as attachement in the pending mails
so how can we manage the mails and know if the pictures are correct or not if we can see them like before
you must show the pictures attachement in pending this is VITAL for the work of moderator
    thanks

Will there be a Management control over this?.

I would suggest adding a) Include in emails and store on site, and b) Store on site (exclude from emails) to the two existing choices for Attachments in the Posting Options page. Preserve the choice between the other two options already made by each group to prevent unnecessary disruption in groups. That is, don’t automatically change group behavior as a result of the push — let the group management decide to change it.

It’s about time this feature was reinstated.

2003 seems like ages ago … and I don’t even remember what the reason was for removing it. What was it again?

I hope you will have “thumbnails” for attachments while accessing messages through the web. I hope the picture attachments are not going to be full-size with each message … I would rather click a thumbnail to open up the full-size image.

    Thanks.

    Hi Nubia…
My group is having the exact problem as yours. Neither myself or my mod has been able to see the images that comes with the messages and we own a PSP Tubes group and generally we like to see what goes thru the group (to prevent it being that of Adult or other tubes we do not allow and other types of tubes)…

We are getting red x in a box and/or [IMG] [IMG]

This however has been going on for us for going on 3 days now.

Gordon, can you please give us approx. how long it will take to get a fix for this. Our group gets approx 500 + emails per day, cannot imagine holding on to that many pending messages.

Thanks so much. Charmaine Jensen Voisine (Group Owner) and Auline (Moderator)

and Gord, this is really getting frustrating not approving messages in the group and leaving them pending grrrr.

How are other group members handling this right now?

    Hi dear Gordon
    there is still a bug
the image in pending mails are visible yes
but it’s not the good image beside each name of image
for exemple if you have 3 image the last one is beside the 1st name
    they are all mixed
so he we need to delete one image and we clic to delete on the name beside it we don’t delete the good one
    i hope i explained well
    can you fiw this too
    thanks a lot

Having started my first list on Onelist.com which later became eGroups.com which later became Yahoo Groups, I have to agree with two previous posts here.

    1) I understand why attachments were dropped at the time but it’s been way too long to re-instate the feature. I too will be glad to see the return of stored attachments. Btw… anyone else remember uploading files to “The Vault”?

    2) I would also hope that attachments are thumb nailed as they are in Yahoo Mail. Many people don’t resize images before posted which can often blow the web page out of proportion or you may be only looking for one of two specific images or files.

Thewaiter and Bryan Ex: There will be thumbnails in the emails and on the web for image files (aka photos). Many users are on slower bandwidth connections so this will hopefully help reduce the email sizes. It also helps users see a preview of the image before actually clicking on them.

Great, but more than a few weeks have passed (its now 6 weeks) and no new news on what is happening. Plus this list contains spam so it looks like yahoo is not even monitoring this list………. I hope yahoo keeps its word and delivers this service. But given the lack of response I hope that yahoo is not running out of money to implement this service upgrade.

Big bug today.. None of the files at my group are accessible when I’m logged in and then click on them. They are not readable. It’s unknown if anybody can see new uploads or links remotely via email.

    The error message received is..

This file is not accessible. on a generalized Yahoo! website 404 page.

LOL, techs check it out. You have permission to access owner options.
