Rather than commenting in my previous post on this topic, I wanted to post follow up responses to some of your suggestions and concerns in a new post. First, I want to apologize about the lack of notice you all received regarding the changes to your profiles. While it wasn’t a change that the Groups team was directly involved with, we know we could have done a better job on communicating the pending changes.
There are several common concerns I’ve seen that I would like to address:
First, I wanted to reassure you that we are reading through all of your comments and concerns and sharing them with the profiles team. There is one request in particular that I want to call out and that’s the request to bring back the date that a user created a profile ("Member since XXXX") we see the value in this and we’ve already shared this feedback with the profiles team for consideration.
I also wanted to ask that you contact the profiles Customer Care team with requests to retrieve information that was contained in your profile or aliases that you may have lost. Please remember, your profile will appear blank UNTIL you go through the new profile migration process, here — please be sure you update your new profile prior to contacting Customer Care about any missing information. After you update, if you’re still missing information, you can reach Customer Care by completing the web form found here .
We’ve also shared your recommendation of adding a “Favorite Websites” section with the profiles team. This would turn entries into clickable links and look into the possibility of migrating the data that was in "cool links" area into this new section.
Additional explanations to some of the concerns you’ve raised:
- Even though last name is "required", it does not show up to anyone you have not made a connection. "Display name" is the only thing that does show up to everyone. If you don’t feel comfortable providing your full name, many users have opted to include a last initial instead of a full last name.
- We understand that some users are receiving a "disabled by an administrator" message and are currently looking into this issue.
- Several of you have asked about the third party applications checkbox and why it only becomes unclickable when you select "My Connections", rather than "Anyone.” This is found under the "Settings/Who can see this on my profile/About Me" section. You are unable to deselect “share my information with 3rd party companies” when your profile is set to public/anyone because it is viewable by anyone— including third parties. When you set your permissions to be viewable by anyone, there is no restriction on who can or cannot view your profile and the information contained in it.
– For more information on how to use your profile, start with the new profiles tutorial, l ocated here .
– To bind your aliases with a profile you must first select which aliases you want to bind to your primary profile. To do this, click here .
- Please note that you must FIRST go through the new user experience before you are able to bind your aliases to your profile. Get started here . Please visit the profiles news blog for more information on this specific topic.
- To add altogether new aliases to your account, go here .
Please note that you must FIRST go through the new user experience before you are able to bind your aliases to your profile. Get started here .
- Last, as an FYI, I wanted to point out that the age/location information that currently appears on Groups Member pages may become increasingly out of date since it is not being updated when a user updates their profile.
I’ll post more information as it comes available.
Thank you,
Jami

Comments were not removed because of “censorship”– a comment is only removed if it’s deemed offensive, attacks another user or Yahoo! employee, or contains profanity.
I assure you that if you check this blog, and the three posts on the profiles blog, you’ll see PLENTY of comments about the new profiles service.
-Melissa
Why were so many of the comments to the blogs about profiles removed? At least one of these blogs had over 900 comments and for the most part were civilized complaints. I understand removing those few that had vulgarities or were personally hostile. But most were just explaining the bad experiences your customers were having with the new Profile scheme. Many were suggestions about how to improve the Beta that you have already implemented. Unless they are archived somewhere and I missed them, deleting them is just censorship, pure and simple.
Dear Yahoo Groups,
I am the owner of an adult Yahoo group. We do not allow pornography, trolling, flaming, or advertising of any kind. Although Yahoo has an age limit of 18 for its adult groups, because the age of majority in many places on Earth is different, we used to have a minimum age of 21. We screened applicants by insisting that they show that age or greater on their Profiles. Now that Yahoo has changed their Profile system it is no longer possible in every case for moderators to click on an applicant’s ID and see their age, even if the applicant has gone through all the proper steps to make their age visible. I have checked this through many times with many different members, and even created new IDs and Profiles in order to test what works and what does not. I am sorry, Yahoo, but the results of following your new Profile-migration-process are not consistent and often vary for reasons unknown.
I felt the only solution open to me to continue operating my group was to reduce the age limit from 21 to 18. I discussed this first with my six moderators, and although we were sorry to have to drop the age limit, we all agreed that there was little else we could do. We felt that if Yahoo wants to take full responsibility for screening out minors from entering our adult group, then so be it. Our responsibility is still that of the group’s content, and this will not change.
Regardless of the simplicity which Yahoo’s screening system provides me and my moderators, we find it somewhat debilitating to no longer be able to see any information whatsoever when clicking on some IDs. The new Profile system is needlessly complex in our opinion, but if Yahoo were to restore the former ability of owners and moderators to see the old level of information when clicking on an ID, then we would be most thankful. We realize that Yahoo is seeking to improve the product it offers, and for this we are grateful, but we would have much preferred that our ability to responsibly run our group not be diminished.
Sincerely,
Arafin
Jami,
You say that “the age/location information that currently appears on Groups Member pages may become increasingly out of date since it is not being updated when a user updates their profile”, but isn’t this going to be remedied? If not, why not, please?
Jeremy Pender
I just logged on to Yahoo and checked my groups. I’m not sure when I last checked them–perhaps 2-3 weeks ago. Because of your new profile system or something, Yahoo Groups shows me as not belonging to any groups. Actually, I’m the owner/moderator of IndianComicsIrregular and belong to about three dozen other groups.
Based on the somewhat confusing info in your Profiles and Groups blogs, I went through the Create a New Profile procedure. I don’t know if this merely updated my old profile to the new format or created a new profile that superseded the old one. In any case, I didn’t see any of my groups listed under my old profile or my new profile. Moreover, when I searched for my IDs, Yahoo didn’t show me subscribed to any groups.
Obviously, I want my status restored to the way it was: 1) Owner/moderator of the IndianComicsIrregular group with full privileges. 2) Membership in all the groups I was previously a member in with the settings the same. (In a few of these groups, I had moderator privileges.)
Needless to say, I’d prefer not to rejoin 30-40 groups one by one. And although I rejoined my own IndianComicsIrregular group and two others, that didn’t make me the owner or moderator of them. Please fix this problem or let me know what I have to do to fix it.
P.S. I informed Yahoo’s customer support of this problem last Wednesday. As yet I haven’t received a reply. When can I expect a response or a resolution?
Ok….I’m TOTALLY lost…..also…when I post things for freecycle…they never show up….why is that?
This rude unannounced privacy invading ‘enhancement’ of profiles is my last straw with yahoo. I have opened a gmail acount, notified those in my contact list I care about of it, and am about to delete my yahoo account which is the only thing I believe yahoo will listen to since nothing in this blog shows anything but uncaring about what people want. You blew it bad yahoo.
For those that wish the link to deleting your account here it is.

My group requires filled out Group profiles for new membership approval,
but now all the public Group profiles are blank. So I have to just let ‘em in,
and then wait for them to spam.
It was unnecessarily complicated to have separate ID profiles, and Group profiles before – most new members didn’t even know they had a Group profile they could fill out besides their ID profile until they were requested to fill out a Group profile.
Now it’s even more convulted – and I cannot get the binding to work.
I dont really know how i got here, I just know i was searching on the internet what happened to the profiles. I really hate this because I feel the old yahoo profiles were a better indicator of who might be contacting you. I received a political email the other day with an opposing opinion of my own and it did not look like a spam email nor did it look like it was sent to a list of someone’s friends. I think it was indeed sent to me only and because I did not recognize the yahoo id I came to yahoo profiles only to find a big gray box and nothing else. Nice. I’m not impressed. Bring back the old profiles format, they worked just fine. Don’t try to fix something that isn’t broke.
When this is all done will the photo albums be listed again by alphabetical order? Right now they are a mess. Love the new changes so far except for the photos being goofed up. Thanks so much, Karen

@David Wilcox:
“All of this is good, but I’m still confused by the relationship between
- My Yahoo ID
- My “extra email address”
- Aliases
- Profiles”
I am confused too David, but I think I’m getting it. Here’s what I know, someone pls confirm:
*Your e-mail address is now associated with a profile. This is your main profile.
*Some Yahoo services (like Yahoo Messenger) allowed you to create “Alias profiles” which were alternate profiles connected to your main e-mail/profile, but could be displayed instead of your main one. These “alias profiles” can no longer be displayed. The info you enetered in to them exists, but Yahoo is making you go through “Customer Care” to get the data back, rather than being proactive about providing it to you or even so much as an informational e-mail, or the data itself cut and pasted to you in an e-mail. You want it, you beg for it and pray you get a response. Some folks have been waiting as much as 3 days and nothing. Some people still get canned responses.
* Each e-mail address you have used within Yahoo is associated with a Yahoo ID. I’m not clear on this part, because I think I have multiple e-mail addresses cross-associated with multiple IDs in various places. But at any rate, each e-mail address you have can be usde to create a profile with. There are no more alias IDs possible, but you can merge your old Alias ID with your main profile, its just now obvious that you are one in the same, completely defeating the purpose of having an Alias ID in the first place, a little fact Yahoo overlooked in this process of forcing us to be us.
DW:
“In short, I created an “extra email address,” and want that address instead of my normal Yahoo ID to be the address I use in several groups. Groups seems to be confused by the concept of extra email address, and won’t let me to use that address.”
You’ll have to subscribe that e-mail address as a new e-mail, and then make a new Yahoo ID to go with it, and THEN make a new profile that goes with that Yahoo ID/e-mail. Otherwise, it will get associated with your old data somewhere.
I think you can have multiple e-mail addresses associated with each Yahoo ID.
I also think its complicated by not being consistent across services. Bottom line, its a mess, I doubt even Yahoo could explain it to you. It wasn’t designed that way, it just became that way, which is the problem. Think of your Yahoo ID like a Safeway Club Card. It tells safeway where you are and what you are doing, but control of the data on that card that represents “you” is updated by you telling it to Yahoo.
Easy right? LOL!
This is just insane … how could you do this to all the hard working group owners
Lover your comment about
- Last, as an FYI, I wanted to point out that the age/location information that currently appears on Groups Member pages may become increasingly out of date since it is not being updated when a user updates their profile.
So why not eliminate that all together and merge in the info from the new profiles? At least we could see who has updated and who hasn’t
Just another yahoo fiasco like the conversion from Clubs to Groups. Still missing my club … but Yahoo lost it and didnt back up that data before the conversion . I had the largest group in Yahoo at the time. And poof one day it was gone. Its taken me 6 years to build up a nice group of folks all over again and the one important control we had was to see details about the members and you took that away from us.
Shame on yahoo for doing this and for handling it the horrible way they do EVERYTHING else.
I am not happy that the fact that they wiped out our profile. They say it better, they may think so as well. They should be smart enough to transfer all our old profile info to the new profile. When we were able to make our own yahoo skins, I was so happy with Yahoo Messenger. Now that the PC group got a hold of it it gone down hill. It going to get to a point where If the public is not happy with yahoo that they will look for another Messengers and ya big wigs will state fine let me, but it in time may cause yahoo to fall with others follow. What ever happen to customers satisfactions. Now I will have to rebuild a profile, Some site require it. I now when I refer to your company as Yahell because you now earned the name. I have to take the time out of my schedule, make a blog entry, redo my profile. then not change it again, OH until yahell makes ya do yet another update to it. OH by the way, I would almost bet to every one person that complains, hundreds of others agree with us. But to lazy to complain.
Jami, I agree with those who are concerned about the changes. I am not looking for a social network and I understand many Yahoo members are not either. I don’t want all the members of the groups I own to be on my connections list in order for them to “see” me. I also think Yahoo has pulled another dirty deed by the box check re third-parties….a person is penalized if they don’t want junk mail into not getting anything! Once, just one time, I would love to see Yahoo do what its members want/need. Instead, Yahoo continually makes arbitrary decisions that relate to nothing the users are asking for. Example, the chat room debacle. Only bots can get in now. What are the developers thinking anyway? How about advising us ahead of time, asking for “beta testers”, get feedback? What is so hard about that??
Interesting point of view. I will definitely look more into it.
Thank you Lena!

Song, the accurance is there:
http://www.ygroupsblog.com/blog/2008/10/17/changes-to-yahoo-profiles/
I quote the official word of yahooGroups staff:
> Some of you have expressed your concern with being unable to verify
> whether or not a user is over 18. Don’t worry—this feature is built in to
> the Yahoo! system—any users under the age of 18 will not be able to
> get to a group that is marked as mature content that may not be
> appropriate for minors. This takes place whether or not a user has
> updated their profile, or whether or not you can view their profile. As a
> group owner, you don’t have to do anything to verify a user’s age.
Some groups were and will be deleted, but NOT because of age in profiles.
I am a moderator of an adult oriented Yahoo group. We have REQUIRED members to post their ages in their profiles. While I know that people can LIE, it was our protection for the Yahoo folks…. so that we could not get shut down because of minors on our list. We DO NOT WANT TO BE SHUT DOWN. Does the new monitoring BY yahoo assure us that our group is safe from being shut down for this reason?
Thanks for letting us know that our complaints and comments are being seen and listen to. I hope that they are being taken to the appropiate departments and the issues are being responded to. A lot of the complaints have been addressed here to a point and I hope they will be resovled.
I do not think it all needs to be back like it was, as change can be good, but I do believe that the things that affect what the moderators do and the users do should be looked at very closley and hopefully returned back to waht they were or at the very least fixed like they were with the new format.
Please continue to keep us all up to date and informed as to the status on what is going on.
Again, Thanks for your RESPONCE and Reply back to us.
Yahoo,
This below is a delicious example of why we look at Profiles. I don’t ever expect too much from a Profile, but when I get a Group Application like this (about once a week), I’m keen to take a look:
“i’m interested to join this group..
just what imagine this group can fulfill my willingness to become true
i can easyly connect with my fren ,my clicks everytime and anywhere
through this also i can add more info in my email, with contacts, job..
hope my true fren can be there when i needed”

This is unrelated to the post but a pet peeve.
I hate the amount of advertisements / extra text appended to the messages sent on the group. I would have moved to Google groups but when the groups been around for a few years you dont want to do that.
I have noticed that Yahoo Mail has stopped appending ads to the emails. Why can’t Yahoo Groups follow suit?
All of this is good, but I’m still confused by the relationship between
– My Yahoo ID
– My “extra email address”
– Aliases
– Profiles
In short, I created an “extra email address,” and want that address instead of my normal Yahoo ID to be the address I use in several groups. Groups seems to be confused by the concept of extra email address, and won’t let me to use that address.
It doesn’t matter which route I go, in order to get to my profile. I get to a page, that says, “Oops! Nothing to see here. Go back to your profile.”
My profile is filled out the best it can be, or as close to a “public profile” as my previous profile was. I don’t understand why I can’t go straight to my profile.
I don’t want to go “connecting” to a lot of people just so they can see my profile and I can see their’s. This is too much like a social networking site. Public profiles should just be something simple, easy to edit and easy to get to.
I can’t seem to find any explanation as to why the new profile URL has to be so weird. It used to be so easy to find a user’s profile by just substituting that person’s Yahoo ID for my Yahoo ID.
JAMI: **** OK .. After I jumped thru all the hoops…
I still get the “OOPS, nothing to show” message.
I go back to my profile.. and everything I NEWLY ENTERED is there … but I cannot make it show up when I click on my ID within a group site …. Permissionis IS marked “anyone”
This is a MAJOR problem.. Please address this specific issue !
Thanx

Seems to be allot of work to reconfigure everything. I’m still unclear on why the change in the first place. It’s obvious that many many members are unhappy with the change. Even if we were notified ahead of time the new format is not what members want. Instead of working with the profile team to tweak problems, why not just put it back the way it was, then ask members what changes they’d like to see and which ones they’d like to keep. Then make changes as needed, but at this point, even was very pleased with the old standard, so the only real way to make members happy is to put things back the way they were because this is going to cause unrest, stress and much work for group owners/moderators who have to walk their members through the new changes, which aren’t easy for most seasoned Yahoo users. So I ask, what was the real reason behind the change? Honesty, please.
Well good information. I imagine yahoo groups developers already know how groups will integrate into the new profile, but I hope it comes with updates on members pages. Perhaps, on public groups the titles of messages can be viewed in the update when they are posted in the group, maybe for private groups moderators can allow certain members to share group titles on their profiles.
