Yahoo! Groups Photos (Media Storage) Enhancements

As promised in our blog post from July 14 entitled What’s in store for Yahoo! Groups , we’re excited to share more details around the enhancements that you’ll start seeing within the Photos section of your Yahoo! Groups over the next several weeks.

While the enhancements at first glance may appear to be modest, we have in fact made several significant changes, including:

  • Increased storage limit for photos, from 100MB to 100GB
  • Unique image locations (in other words, a URL that will link directly to a photo within your Group)
  • The original photo uploaded will now be stored in your group (which means that anyone can click to see the original size of the image when it was uploaded)
  • The ability to upload new image formats, including GIFs, BMPs, and PNGs
  • The ability to upload up to five photos that add up to 100MB (from 5MB)

We’ve begun slowly rolling these enhancements out to a handful of Groups and will continue with this process over the next several weeks so we can ensure a smooth roll out.

Once you have the opportunity to see the enhancements, let us know what you think by commenting below.

Enjoy!

HELP – The advanatage of having the original full-sized photo is negated by not being able to view the full area of the photo – no horizontal scoll bar is provided that will allow you to see the parts of the picture that have been amputated by the Yahoo frame. Top to bottom of the left hand side only is viewable by using the main vertical scroll bar.

Does Yahoo plan to provide a horizontal scroll bar under the orignal sized photo when displayed in the Photos area? If so when is this likely to be provided? If not, how do my group’s members view all of an original sized photo?

The link above is to a 3mb approx photo file on the ModelIndustrialist Group. Please advise how to view the full area of this photo from the Photos page

Thanks for looking for ways to improve things but I do much prefer the old system.
The extra white space around thumbnails makes it difficult to take in a range of images at most screen resolutions. Is it possible to have this space removed?
I would like the option of having albums sorted by title as a default.
When I sort albums by title they sort in reverse order, is this something I can over-ride?

    Hi Tony,
    Try this -
    Go to Photos Page
At View (at top left of page) – select List
Click the arrow to the right of Album Name – order of list should reverse
    Click Thumbnails
Thumbnails should now display in reverse order

    I hope that this helps

Yahoo New Photos Structure and Problems

Only one of the groups of which I am a member,
has as yet been changed to the new Photos package,
    and my observations follow …

1 – The “Photos” section when first opened has a
default setting of “Ordinal”, which appears to be
“Last modified date / reverse alphabetical – Z to A
(or high ASCII order)”, and should bring up any
albums with new photos to the top of the list.

2 – To sort the “Photos” directory in a meaningful order,
requires clicking on “List”, and then “Album Name”, which
will order the “List” by “Album Name / A to Z (low ASCII order)”.
Clicking “Thumbnail” will also keep this sort as well.

3 – When you close your browser the “Sort” reverts back to the
default setting of “Ordinal”, as shown in 1 above.

4 – No Delete or Edit option or check boxes shown at this point,
so no way to edit album name or delete album as yet.

5 – Opening the album shows “Edit – Move – Copy – Delete”
but check boxes not shown on some of the photos.
(Perhaps a pre generation 2 photo quirk)
Clicking on “Edit” brings up this error message
“Please select photo(s) for this action”.
Clicking on a photo with no check box before or after
clicking edit only opens the photo.

6 – “Rearrange Photos” feature sadly missing!!

7 – Photos over 500 +/- pixels have the right hand portion
missing in both the “Large” and “Original” sizes settings,
and no method is provided to scroll photo horizontally.
(Note – We now have considerably more storage space for
photos, but was the “original size” category not a problem
back in the original photos format?
    - These newer cameras generate some huge file sizes)

8- Had hoped for a return to the nested or sub album format
of the original photos format. It worked well for our groups.

    Hi All

Further to my last comment post (Comment #3)
I have come up with a additional problem…

If you have added any of the non alpha numerical ASCII
characters to the beginning of your album name either to
secure a “first in list” position, or just as part of the album
name, you will be unable to add photos to your album.
The “Add Photo” is not available when you are in the album,
and the “Add to an existing photo album” list will not include
albums with names starting with most of these low or high
    ASCII characters.
So with no way to rename or delete your album, you can only
leave it as is and start a new album
I use these characters on occasion to intentionally position
(or sticky) a pertinent album in the groups that I own.

Re: Yahoo New Photos Structure and Problems

Picture Width – Scroll Bar Problem
    More Musings …
    With Win2000 / IE6 (W2K will only run IE6), it requires a min
    1152 x 864 screen resolution to see a photo 800 pixels
wide, and the horizontal scroll bar is non existent.
Running IE7 on Win XP or (heaven forbid) Vista will solve the
missing horizontal scroll bar, but screen resolution settings will
still need to be min 1152 x 864 for photos 800 pixels wide in
“Large”, and “Original” might require 1280 or more.
There are no Original size photos to test with as yet..
I did not try all the various resolution settings, but the ones shown
worked for me. These resolution are to fine for the distance that
my setup requires the monitors to be from where I am seated.

Ok one thing I do NOT Like at all is the new upload system. = HORRIBLE. I hate how you have to click on the add more box each time to make new ones show up. This adds to the time it takes to upload. And still only 5 at a time? come ON. with the old old old ygroups system, we could upload TONS at a time. you guys still have not given that back to us.

Also – I think you guys should add a download system for photos. So if you want to delete your group, but not loose your pics, you can just click one simple button, have them all downloaded and be done with it.

Can someone explain the difference between selecting “Large” and “Original” size when viewing a photo? On every photo I’ve tried it with I get the same size (the original size).

When viewing new photos (i.e. photos added in the last 7 days), if I click on a photo thumbnail to view it larger I don’t see the “Large” and “Original” size options, am restricted to 480 pixel viewing. But if I go to the photo’s album and then click on the photo thumbnail to see it larger I do see the different size options (”Large” and “Original”) and they work as expected. Would be nice if the size options were shown when viewing new photos.

    Hi Bill

Clicking on a new photo accessed from the “New Photos” on the home page also has no “next” option, so I find it best to click on the album name rather the the photo, and it will take right you to the album without the hassle of finding it in the photos section. As you are probably are aware, “List” in the old Photos section will bring the albums with new photos to the top – I will wait for the new and improved version to settle in before I suggest how to use it.

    New Photos Format
    - And the beat(ing) goes on -
    PLEASE -
We Must – MUst – MUSt – MUST have the Rearrange Feature
in the New Photos Format.. Many of us use photos to illustrate
a repair sequence or have progress photos of projects that require
the ability to order the photos. After loosing the nested album feature
of the early Photos, and then getting partial redemption with the
Rearrange feature in the current Photos, we now will have neither.
If you have an album with a “Personal” designation, it may not
recognize it’s owner to the point of providing complete access
    after the change..
I originaly thought that this was to do with using non alphanumeric
charicters in the album name, but further reasearch proves me wrong.
Mine would not come up in the list that opens when you click
on “Edit”, and further checking revealed that none of the other members
older “Personal” albums were on this list. Only “Group” albums appear.
(The new Photos Format now calls these Personal albums ”Private”.)
My albums in groups that have not as yet been “Upgraded” work
correctly, with all photos having an Edit check box.
The one “Upgraded” album that I have to date was missing these
check boxes on half of the photos, requiring copying them back
to my computer, and uploading them again, in order to move them
to the new album that I had to make.
It’s also annoying to loose the original upload dates on the photos,
due to the forced move to a new album.
There is also no way to delete my old album, or the unmarked photos in it.
    Grrrrrrrrr.
    Regards
    Art

    New Photos Format
    – And the beat goes on

After spending much time trying to figure out the new photos format,
including making a new album to replace my old crippled one, it seems
they have now rolled back these new improved features in the one group
that I belong to that had them.
My old album, which the moderator deleted for me is now back, and it still
includes the pics that I had moved to my new album, (but with the new dates) and it does not have the new pics that were added after that.
The group’s home page still indicates “8 new Photos”, but clicking there
shows “There are no new photos”
I now have full access to the Edit, Delete, Add Photo etc features, but any
attempt to add new pics to the resurrected old album are met with the message

“You do not have the privileges to perform this operation.”

    Hello! :)

I am very excited about the changes being made to Yahoo! Groups Photo Section, especially the 100 GB of memory Yahoo is adding to each group. Thank you! Its great the website is rolling out ways to improve. :)

I love all the changes except one, the album organization automatically defaults to “Original” setting which seems to be organized by last modified. I know that you can change it to list A-Z but it always goes back to the Original order. Myself and my group members have been organizing our photos by an A-Z numbering system since I opened the group back in 2001.

Can you please PLEASE change it so the photos default #’s, then A-Z, but still have those other options, just not defaulted to them? Or even give the mods of each group a Photo Setting so they can choose how they’d like the organization of the photos albums to default? My group members would appreciate it so much, please consider doing this.

    Thank you,
    Sara

We’re aware of the issue and our team is working on it, but Customer Care will be able to appropriately log the bug. Reporting issues on the blog doesn’t typically escalate the process– the fastest way to get an issue resolved is to first check here to see if the issue has been discussed, then, if it hasn’t, contact Customer Care, and then, check back here for more information and to follow-up

    Melissa,

I also posted on the Group Managers Forum, regarding this problem, this afternoon. Seems that the Moderators there are unaware that there is a problem at all. This problem has only been encountered on the new format. I’ve had no upload problems with the old format or either of the photo sharing sites that I use.

I would hope that these “bugs” will be worked out before you complete the rollout of the new format.

    Posted 11/05/08 —
I’ve been told that the new photo format will be rolled out, to all
groups, within the next 2 weeks. Will the problems with error code
#103, (which I’ve also been told only affects Dial-up users), be
resolved by then. There are group members that don’t have access to
    any other IP.

    Moderator reply —
[Mod note: Slow speeds - uploading in particular - affect ALL users,
not just dialup. Face it, there are places designed to share photos,
and they don't work for dialup either.]

It’s more difficult now to upload photos – with old way would get 5 browse entry lines at once, now have to click “add another photo” 5 times to get five….
An uploader of some kind would be nice, or at least a way to get 5 browse lines at once like before – thanks

I would very much like to see the live link to which album a “new” photo belongs. You used to be able to view new photos and under the photo click on the album link and view that way. Please reinstate this….

Also, I’d very much like to see a search feature for the photo album section. When a group has 80 or 90 photo albums and you;re trying to find a specific photo, there currently is no way to find /go to a specific album or photo without going page by agonizing page till you get to that alpha listed section. Either allow us to jump to A-B-C-D-etc or set up a search by album name, author or photo name.
    Thanks!

Can anyone tell me when the increasing of the photo albums will be completed in all groups? My group is still at the old 100MB size and I have been patiently waiting for it to be increased to the new 100 GB size. I would like to be able to add a lot of new photos that I have stored in another place. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I too am a dial-up user (too far from the telephone exchange so technically impossible for broad-band) and am having problems. I keep getting the 103 fault message on almost all my groups, with the exception of one (which might be a group which pays rather than a free one). Is there anything I can do to sort this out or is it entirely up to Yahoo?

Back in November I was able to up-load photos, while on dial-up. Now I’m having the same error code #103 again. The issue seemed to be resolved and now it’s back again. What is wrong this time?

    Hooray,
Yahoo lives up to Jonathon Swifts word. I did not change anything, I did not ask for a change. It was just thrust on me. I am so pissed off, that if I see the words Error 103 again I will sell my horses. What is the deal. A back log of pics I can not send out. So much for business.Who was the idiot who made this “exciting change”. Yahoo please change me back to when it worked and fire someone. Unless my stuff gets out, I will have to. Very unhappy, and a suitably lousy holiday season to anyone who is linked to Error 103 Roger

Error 103 problem here, too. This problem could be cured if the system would allow downloading via links to other photo servers (eg Flickr or Photobucket). I have NO problem with uploading to photoservers. It is ONLY Yahoo Groups problem.

    Recieved the following message from Yahoo Customer Care, regarding the error code #103 problem;

“Thank you for your inquiry. The issue which you have brought to our
attention should now be resolved. You should now be able to use Yahoo!
Groups with functionality restored to normal. We apologize for any
inconvenience this may have caused you, and we appreciate your patience.
If you are still experiencing the problem, please contact us again.”

I was able to upload a test photo with no problems. Good to go (?), till next time.

Yes, I am on dial-up and have been for years so why the problems now?? I just found this blog and am hoping to get things back to normal. All that these “NEW” changes have done for me is make it impossible to participate and interact with my groups. Thanks for complicating things at Yahoo even more

where is the option for ‘album’ under new photos?
now the only live link is to the new and horrible profile on yahoo
the photos are all in disarray
where are the alphabetically listings for albums?
where are the helps we need on our groups?!!!!

the changes are NOT GOOD!!!! more space is useless when it is as inaccessible as you have made this!!

please have a ‘next’ option on enlarged photos in the ‘new photos’ page
please have a live link to group albums in the ‘new photos’ page
please have alphabetical listings of albums without having to re-arrange every flippin’ time!!!!!

please listen to the people who actually use yahoo groups on a regular basis!

    Hi All

It’s been a while since I posted about the New Photos rollout and it’s features.
Seems to be coming along quite nicely, and you can throw away those
lumps of coal I had Santa put in your Xmas stockings. However, a couple comments or questions if I may…..

The thumbnails are a good size when you open an album, making it
easier to view the album contents, but the lack of a entry in position 21 (lower RH corner) gives the viewer the impression there are no additional pages. Only if you scroll right to the bottom of the screen does the easily missed fine print show. The same is true of the main Photos index when viewed in the “Thumbnail” option. Any chance of a possible fix for this -
21 photos per page or ?

Will the link direct to the containing album be available again when a thumbnail of a new photo in the “Activity within 7 days – New Photos”
on the home page is opened ?

When an album is opened, a thumbnail or two are often missing, with a
text “place holder” showing instead. Usually opening one photo on either
side of the missing one and then using the “previous” or “next” button will “wake” it up. I deleted a couple of the markers (and as it turns out the photos) when I assumed the photos were missing or damaged.!!

I’m still not sure what order the index will open in, but getting to the
point where I just ignore it .

    Regards
    Art

My groups just got the 100gb storage this week! It seems like we can upload photos without any problems *knock wood*, but everything is out of order. I’ve read every post here and nowhere does it give directions on how to get photos albums back in alphabetical order. With 100+ albums – we need order! I’ve put them in order via the list several times, but as soon as the browser is closed and re-opened, they’re scrambled again.
    HELP!

I am very happy with the extra Photo storage, but am very upset at the scrambled order that my photo albums are now in. Our group has stored so many pictures in an order we were used to, now they are a big mess!
Please give at least the moderator an option to organize the photo albums by moving them around, or an A-Z option. The options offered are not any help at all~PLEASE DO SOMETHING SOON! MY MEMBERS ARE NOT HAPPY AND WANDERING FROM YAHOO TO OTHER AREAS~AND I WANT US TO STAY WHERE WE ARE!!!

Will there be a search box added to the Photos? It makes it a bit hard when someone posts new photos and you have over 300 albums to go through and have to go to several screens just to find them. I’m happy to see they got the width problem fixed as well.

On Inky Fun Stampers Yahoo Group we are having lots of problems with the photo section of our group. I’ve tried clicking on “List”, and then “Album Name”, which will order the “List” by “Album Name / A to Z and then clicking “Thumbnail” will also keep this sort as well. When I close my browser the “Sort” reverts back to the default setting of “Ordinal”.

Also, some of the album folders are smaller and we can’t see any names on it. What am I doing wrong? Love, Audrey
