Yahoo! Groups Tip: Groups Privacy Settings
Ever wonder what privacy controls you have on Yahoo! Groups? Well, there are three settings that control who can join your group, who can find your group, and who can see your group messages that I wanted to highlight.
The first decision you need to make when starting a new group is what type of Membership settings (who can join your group), you want to enable. You can choose one of the following two settings:
- Open group – anyone can join
- Restricted group - new members need approval to join
Membership settings is found under: Management > Group Settings > Membership > Membership Type and Welcome Message. Click edit and choose the membership top at the top of the page and then click save changes.
You then need to choose whether or not you want your group listed in the Groups Directory (who can find your group).
- If you choose to have your group listed in the directory, then your group can be found by users searching or browsing through the Groups Directory.
- If, on the other hand, you choose to make your group unlisted, it will not be found in the Groups Directory.
Listings settings can be found under: Management > Group Settings > Description. Click edit and scroll down and you’ll see “listing type”, once you choose, click save changes.
You also have three options for who can see your group messages:
- Anyone on the web can view them
- Only members can view them
- Only moderators can view them
Message option settings can be found under: Management > Group Settings > Messages > Posting and Archives. Click edit and choose the archive option you desire and then click save changes.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m one of the old timers from Yahoo - meaning I’ve been around a long, time. I had lists when it was One List, then when One List combined with egroups - then Yahoo finally took it over completely. I loved One List. We never seemed to have any problems back then - but we did have more problems with lurkers or trolls, as they were called - but they would be taken care of by the list owners-usually removed from the list and banned. We can do that today as well - which is a good feature, because like everyone else, it only takes one to spoil things.
However, I am somewhat confused about all these new ventures when it comes to groups. We have groups meetings all over the world - it sounds like Yahoo is setting up little governments everywhere - all these new rules and conditions - it’s so complicated - at least it sounds that way and it’s suppose to be about having fun and meeting people.
There also seems to be a push for competitive lists - who has the most members, etc., - when I’m thinking, who cares? I sure don’t. Quantity doesn’t necessarily mean quality. I think it’s the cause of some list owners spamming others lists with their invites to their own lists.
I am not sure what your ultimate goal is- and maybe a large majorty of poeople like all these rules and meetings and setting things up the way it’s going- with maps and all that. Personally, I don’t want my home being listed on any map to make it any easier for anyone to find out where I live. I know who my friends are online and prefer to make my own friends.
I’d rather have 20 good members than 500 who never participate and/or are either arguing all the time or don’t get to know everyone as a friend. Quality is more important to me, than quanity.
I think Yahoo has come a long way from all the years past when I first started to use Yahoo and there have been some good features provided - no doubt about that.
But I don’t understand all these “town meetings” being held all over the country and the purpose behind it. Seems as if you might be headed toward elected group list owners and creating communities that is based more on politics. “Politics” is the main reason why this world is in the mess it’s in today.
I just hope that those of us who are happy with the way things are, won’t be forced to participate in all these plans Yahoo is making along with some selected users. If it works, leave it alone, I think.
The more rules, regulations and set up programs that are made the more complicated it becomes and the less fun it will be. Just my opinion. Thanks.

Why not focus on things that really matter like eliminating spam messages coming from automated registrations instead of adding numerous cool new functions that in the end barely anyone will use?
I’m looking forward to the day that automated registrations are no longer possible, especially for open groups like mine. That will save me and all other group administrators valuable time and frustrations.

I have noticed that several of the groups I have just joined seemed to be inactive and taken over by people posting spurious and totally irrelevant messages. This seems to be a waste of time for all concerned. I just unsubscribed to three groups because of this problem. Can’t something be done to prevent groups, even if they are inactive and only exist as an archive, from being hijacked?
The most hilarious example was a Tarkovsky group I joined which now seems to be hijacked by a biker group!
How do we keep the morons out of what would be interesting groups, were it not for the idiots who take them over for their own perverse reasons.
Yahoo must address this issue - fast. Any ideas?

Hey guys, is there an upcoming event…social gathering. I admit to not being the most technological and internet savy, but I have been navigating through the group site to see if any gatherings are pending or upcoming.

Are there any significant experiences you have had, or
accomplishments you have realised, that have helped
to define you as a person ?
ANSWER HERE BELOW:::
This Is A True Story Of A Boy In School;;;
I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling walls and crushing ice.
I have been known to remodel train stations on my lunch breaks,
making them more efficient in the area of heat retention. I translate
ethnic slurs for Kenyan refugees, I write award-winning operas, and
manage time efficiently. Occasionally, I tread water for three days
in a row. I woo women with my sensuous and godlike trombone
playing, I can pilot bicycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed,
and I cook thirty Minute Brownies in twenty minutes.
I am an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru.
Using only a hoe and a large glass of water, I once single-handedly
defended a small village in the Amazon Basin from a horde of
ferocious army ants. I play bluegrass cello, I had trials with Manchester
United, I am the subject of numerous documentaries.
When I’m bored, I build large suspension bridges in my garden.
I enjoy urban hang gliding. On Wednesdays, after school, I repair
electrical appliances free of charge. I am an abstract artist, a
concrete analyst, and a ruthless bookie. Critics worldwide swoon
over my original line of corduroy evening wear. I don’t perspire.
I am a private citizen, yet I receive fan mail. I have appeared on
Through the Keyhole and won the gold plaque. Last summer I
toured Eastern Europe with a traveling centrifugal-force demonstration.
I run the 100m in 9.65 secs. My deft floral arrangements have earned
me fame in international botany circles. Children trust me. I can hurl
tennis rackets at small moving objects with deadly accuracy. I
once read Paradise Lost, Moby Dick, and David Copperfield in one
day and still had time to refurbish an entire dining room that evening.
I know the exact location of every food item in the supermarket. I have
performed several covert operations for the CIA. I sleep once a week;
when I do sleep, I sleep in a chair. While on vacation in Canada,
I successfully negotiated with a group of terrorists who had seized
a small bakery. The laws of physics do not apply to me.
I balance, I weave, I dodge, I frolic, and my bills are all paid.
On weekends, to let off steam, I participate in full-contact origami.
Years ago I discovered the meaning of life but forgot to write it down.
I have made extraordinary four course meals using only some
vegetables and a Breville Toaster.
I breed prizewinning clams. I have won bullfights in Madrid,
cliff-diving competitions in Sri Lanka, and chess competitions at
the Kremlin. I have played Hamlet, I have performed open-heart
surgery, and I have spoken with Elvis.
If you please:: Mr.I.B.Fillanaganizer

The Jack Schitt story
For some time many of us have
wondered just who is Jack Schitt? We
find ourselves at a loss when someone
says, “You don’t know Jack Schitt!”
Well, thanks to my genealogy efforts,
you can now respond in an intellectual way.
Jack Schitt is the only son of Awe Schitt.
Awe Schitt, the fertilizer magnate, married
O. Schitt, the owner of Needeep N. Schitt, Inc.
They had one son, Jack.
In turn, Jack Schitt married Noe Schitt.
The deeply religious couple produced
six children: Holie Schitt, Giva Schitt,
Fulla Schitt, Bull Schitt, and the twins
Deap Schitt and Dip Schitt. Against her
parents’ objections, Deap Schitt married
Dumb Schitt, a high school dropout.
After being married 15 years, Jack and
Noe Schitt divorced. Noe Schitt later
married Ted Sherlock, and, because her
kids were living with them, she wanted to
keep her previous name. She was then known
as Noe Schitt Sherlock.
Meanwhile, Dip Schitt married Loda Schitt,
and they produced a son with a rather
nervous disposition named Chicken Schitt.
Two of the other six children, Fulla Schitt
and Giva Schitt, were inseparable throughout
childhood and subsequently married the
Happens brothers in a dual ceremony.
The wedding announcement in the newspaper
announced the Schitt-Happens nuptials.
The Schitt-Happens children were Dawg,
Byrd, and Hoarse. Bull Schitt, the prodigal
son, left home to tour the world. He recently
returned from Italy with his new Italian bride, Pisa
Schitt.
Now, when someone says, “You don’t know Jack Schitt,”
you can correct them,And say I know all the about
Schitt’s

Beware of Virus
There is a virus being passed around electronically, orally, and by
hand.
This virus is called Worm-Overload-Recreational-Killer (WORK).
If you receive WORK from any of your colleagues, your boss, or anyone
else via any means DO NOT TOUCH IT. This virus will wipe out your
private life completely.
If you should come into contact with WORK put your jacket on and take
two good friends to the nearest grocery store.
Purchase the antidote known as Work-Isolating-Neutralizer-Extract
(WINE) or Bothersome-Employer-Elimination-Rebooter (BEER).
Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated
from your system.
You should forward this warning to 5 friends.
If you do not have 5 friends, you have already been infected and WORK is
controlling your life.
