Yahoo! Groups Beta – 11-14-07

In case you haven’t heard, the Groups team is currently testing new features and enhancements to the Groups product based on feedback we’ve heard from many of you.

As mentioned in a post in early July, while we test and make enhancements and improvements to the Groups Beta product, some features will be temporarily unavailable. These include: Shared Calendar, Polls, Database, Scheduled Messages, and the Online Rich Text Editor. These features will come, but we need time to get them right.

We’ve asked moderators who are interested in testing the new functionality to set up a beta test group and share their feedback with us as well as collaborate on ideas and recommendations for improvements.

If you want to set up a beta test the group, you can by taking the following steps:

  1. Join the The Official Group for the Yahoo! Groups Beta or any other Beta group (but if you do join the Beta Forum, we recommend becoming a daily digest or special notice subscriber given the volume).
  2. Click on the “My Groups” link in the upper left-hand corner and then click on “Start a Group” link at the very bottom of that drop down
  3. Once you click on that link you will then be prompted with the steps to set up your new
    beta group
  4. Finally, share your feedback with the Groups team on the Beta Forum or by making a suggestion on the Groups Beta Suggestions Board.

If you aren’t interested setting up a beta group to but want to stay up on the latest beta news, you can stay do so by checking the Groups Beta Status module in the upper right hand corner on of Moderator Central.

Thanks!

    Greetings.

I’ve been using the Rich-Text Editor of late to respond to posts on one of the groups I’m on (thanks to a silly blunder by ClearWire that messed up my normal sending options in Thunderbird) … and I have to say, it’s not quite ready for prime time, to coin a phrase.

Sure, it looks nice … but when I type a message using it, then Preview the message, I see several pairs of words being joined together — i.e., “share this” becomes “sharethis.”

URLs, if I just type them in and DON”T have the editor make them hyperlinks become hyperlinks when posted (which is a Good Thing) … but when I make them hyperlinks using the Rich-Text Editor, when posted, each URL is posted twice, like so:

“So download my http://www.really_cool_thing.com and your life will improve!”

(Yes, that is a bogus URL; don’t click it)

Also, quoting doesn’t seem to work.

When I chose “reply” to a message, I’ll get a paragraph with one quote mark (you know … this thing: >) … which then shows up in the message as a paragraph with (you guess it) one quote mark.

Adding my own paragraphing and the appropriate quote marks will simply get me a few lines with the quote mark randomly placed in the paragraph.

Would be good to fix that.

    Thanks ….

I just set up a Yahoo “group” and find that many of the modules are “unavailable”. I read the comment above and understand why this is happening, but when will I have full access to my Group?. I don’t want to invite people and proceed further until I know. Thanks.

  4. murat says:

how can I add the ‘polls’ section to my group???

  5. Janet pirozzi says:

The calendar function is pretty limited. If a copy function were added, it would reduce the time it now takes to add similar activities on days that do not meet the criteria of the current options.

  6. Rob Marsh says:

I am in the process of setting up a group for a group of local churches and want to establish if Calendar reminders can be allocatted to a mailing list, so that only those group members affected will receive reminders and notifications.
If it is not available at present, is it something that could be considered for future enhancements

  7. Adrian Ettlinger says:

I second Rob Weigle’s suggestion. I find most new members prefer Daily Digest mode if they are aware of it, and would like to see all new members defaulted to that mode. This is contingent, however, on Yahoo providing Daily Digest mode, which currently has not been functioning for my group for three weeks, and for which I’m impatieintly waiting for it to be repaired.

  8. salaken says:

how can i change my existing group to a beta group?

  9. khuai says:

how can i do to make my group updates..
    my group look gread..
    i want upgread my yahoogroup..

  10. Rob Weigle says:

I would make it possible for the moderator to select the type of membership someone get by default. I have one group where I encouraged members to become Daily Digest members another where I went one step further. In that group, I told people the benefits of Daily Digest and encouraged people to become digest members. I waited some time, and those who remained Individual Message members I ‘forced’ as Daily Digest members. New members are changed to that form as soon as I see them as new members. This is very soon as this is a group where I have to approve new members.. However, I would like not to have that step.
